02Overview
A first look
Sixteen days lets you do Egypt without rushing. You start in Cairo with a Nile dinner cruise, then spend a full day at the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The Citadel of Saladin, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and a day at Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur follow before you fly south.
In Aswan you see Philae, a Nubian village and Abu Simbel, and take a private motorboat around Elephantine Island. Then you drive to Luxor for four nights: Karnak, the West Bank, Dendera and Abydos. A flight brings you back to Cairo for its old treasures, and then comes the part most visitors never see: a night in a simple camp in the White Desert. A day in the Fayoum and a quiet last evening in Cairo close the trip. Hotels are your choice of standard, from budget to luxury, and the sightseeing stays the same.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
16 Days / 15 Nights · Cairo · Giza · Alexandria · Aswan · Abu Simbel · Kom Ombo
- 1
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and takes you to your hotel. Rest after your flight. In the evening you are collected for a Nile dinner cruise: about two hours on the river with a buffet and a live show, and the lights of Cairo along the banks.
- 2
A full day with your Egyptologist, with the Giza visit taking 4 to 6 hours. Start on the plateau with the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. After lunch you go on to the Grand Egyptian Museum for the Tutankhamun collection and the great statues of the Old and New Kingdoms. Your guide, the entrance fees and the vehicle are all included.
- 3
Two visits today. You see the Citadel of Saladin, the hilltop fortress that ruled Cairo for centuries, and then the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, about four hours with the main exhibition hall and the Royal Mummies Hall. A set lunch is served near the museum. Your Egyptologist guide, the entrance fees and the private vehicle are included.
- 4
A day south of Cairo among the earliest pyramids. At Saqqara you see the Step Pyramid, built for King Djoser. Memphis was Egypt's first capital, and its open-air museum holds a colossal statue of Ramses II. At Dahshur you see the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. Your guide, the entrance fees and the vehicle are included. Lunch is not part of the day, so your guide can suggest a stop.
- 5
You transfer to Cairo Airport for the flight to Aswan, with sightseeing arranged around the airline's schedule. A driver takes you to Aswan, where your guide shows you the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and, by boat, Philae Temple on its island. You also visit a Nubian village. Guide, entrance fees and transport are included. You spend three nights in Aswan.
- 6
A full day by road to Abu Simbel, so the start is early. Ramses II cut the Great Temple and the smaller temple of Nefertari into the cliff, and in the 1960s both were moved to higher ground when Lake Nasser rose. Entrance fees, an English-speaking guide and the transport are included. You return to your Aswan hotel in the evening. Lunch is not part of this day, so your guide can suggest a stop.
- 7
A slower day on the river. A private motorboat takes you to Elephantine Island, with its ruins and Nubian houses, and to the Aswan Botanical Garden on Kitchener's Island. The rest of the day is free, to walk the corniche or rest before the drive to Luxor tomorrow.
- 8
You drive north from Aswan to Luxor and stop on the way. Kom Ombo is the double temple of the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus, standing on the riverbank. The Temple of Horus at Edfu is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Your guide, the entrance fees and the vehicle are included. You then arrive in Luxor for four nights.
- 9
With your Egyptologist you visit Karnak, the largest temple complex in Egypt, with its forest of columns, and Luxor Temple near the river. You then see the Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum. Guide, entrance fees and transport between sites are included.
- 10
Cross to the West Bank, where the pharaohs built their tombs. You visit the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Queens. It is a full day, and much of it is outdoors with little shade. Your guide, the entrance fees and the vehicle are included.
- 11
A full day trip north of Luxor. Dendera is the temple of Hathor, with a famous ceiling of the zodiac, and Abydos is the temple of Seti I and a sacred site of Osiris. You travel by air-conditioned vehicle with your Egyptologist, and entrance fees and lunch at a local restaurant are included, with a bottle of water each.
- 12
You transfer to Luxor Airport for the flight to Cairo. Flight times follow the airline's schedule, so the day is arranged around it. In Cairo you spend about eight hours with your Egyptologist: the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, Coptic Cairo, Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, with lunch at a local restaurant. Entrance fees to the listed sites are included.
- 13
The two-day White Desert trip begins. A private vehicle drives you from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, where a local desert driver-guide takes over with a 4x4. You cross the Black Desert, stop at Crystal Mountain and reach the White Desert for sunset among its chalk rock shapes. Lunch and dinner are served today.
You sleep in a simple camp: a tent, a mattress, a sleeping bag and blankets, with shared facilities. We confirm the camp arrangements and the final price for the desert part with you before you pay.
- 14
Watch the sun rise over the White Desert, then have breakfast at the camp. The 4x4 and your private vehicle take you back to Cairo, where you reach your hotel. The afternoon is free to rest, shop or wash off the desert dust.
- 15
A day trip of about ten hours to the Fayoum, a green oasis southwest of Cairo. You see Lake Qarun, the lakes and waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan and the old waterwheels of Fayoum city. A private English-speaking guide and a private vehicle are included, as is lunch at a local restaurant. It is a quiet last full day before you go home.
- 16
After breakfast you check out and your driver takes you to Cairo International Airport for your flight home. A representative helps with luggage, and we ask you to allow a generous time before an international flight.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Visit Giza early morning for clearer views before heat haze builds over the plateau.
- 02
Luxor Temple at night gives softer light on the colonnades than midday visits.
- 03
Bring small cash for drinks and tips, since neither is included in the package.
- 04
Bahariya roads can feel long, so keep water and a neck pillow in your day bag.
- 05
At Philae, boat timing matters, because access depends on the lake transfer schedule.

Accessibility
Who can join this
This tour involves a lot of walking on large archaeological sites and in museums, with uneven stone, sand, steps and some narrow tomb passages. Karnak and Luxor's West Bank have long outdoor stretches with little shade. The Abu Simbel, Dendera and Abydos, White Desert and Fayoum days include long drives. The White Desert night is in a simple camp with tents and shared facilities, reached by 4x4 on rough ground. We confirm the camp arrangements and the final price for the desert part with you before you pay. The vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us your needs when you book and we will tell you honestly which parts are suitable.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The tour uses two domestic flights, private road transfers and a 4x4 trip into the desert, and vehicle types vary, so we do not claim a carbon saving. Sightseeing is guided by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, the Fayoum and Bahariya, so much of what you spend stays in the places you visit. In the desert we ask guests to take their trash away and not to remove stones or fossils. Please bring a refillable water bottle.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the domestic flights included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Aswan on day 5 and from Luxor to Cairo on day 12 are booked for you and are included in the price. International flights are not.02Is there a Nile cruise on this tour?
No. This is a land tour with hotels in each city. You go from Aswan to Luxor by road on day 8, with Kom Ombo and Edfu on the way. Ask us if you would like a ship added.03Is Abu Simbel included?
Yes. Day 6 is a full day by road from Aswan, with the guide, entrance fees and transport included. The start is early and it is a long day.04What is the White Desert night like?
It is a simple camp: a tent, a mattress, a sleeping bag and blankets, with shared facilities. You travel by private vehicle to Bahariya Oasis and then by 4x4 with a local desert driver-guide. Lunch and dinner on day 13 and breakfast on day 14 are included, with protected-area fees and bottled water. Nights can be cold. We confirm the camp arrangements and the final price for the desert part with you before you pay.05What is the Fayoum?
The Fayoum is a green oasis southwest of Cairo. Day 15 takes you to Lake Qarun, the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls and the waterwheels of Fayoum city, with a private guide, a vehicle and lunch.06Why are there so many nights in Cairo?
Cairo has the most to see, and this tour gives it proper time: four nights at the start, one after Luxor and two after the desert. In between you fly south for Aswan and Luxor.07Will I make my international flight?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed domestic flight can cost you the connection. On this tour the last domestic flight is on day 12, and you then spend four more nights in Cairo, so there is a very wide margin. If you add flights of your own, take travel insurance that covers missed connections.08Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are the same at every standard.09What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks and meals other than those stated, the inside of the Khufu pyramid and premium tombs such as Tutankhamun's.10When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for walking around the sites. Summers are very hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan, so days start early. Desert nights are cold in winter.
