Twelve days unlocks the secondary destinations a 10-day trip can't fit: Alexandria as more than a day trip (2 nights), the White Desert overnight at Bahariya, OR a longer Red Sea segment for serious diving. At 10 days you pick one of the cultural extensions; at 12 days you can usually run two. If you want both temples and time at a single non-Nile destination, 12 days is the threshold.

Private 12-day Egypt tours start around $2,700 per person at 5-star with Nile cruise included. Mid-range (4-star hotels, 5-star ship) runs $3,600–$5,200. Premium tier (suite hotels, dahabiya, Oberoi-class ships) is $6,500–$11,000 per person. White Desert overnight adds $250–$400, Red Sea extension $300–$700 per person. Add 25–35% for Christmas, New Year, and US spring break.

If desert landscapes pull you more than another temple day, yes – the chalk formations of the White Desert (Sahara el Beyda) are unlike anything else on the standard Egypt circuit, and the camp dinner under the stars at Crystal Mountain is one of the most-remembered nights our clients report. It's a 5-hour drive each way from Cairo via Bahariya, hence the 12-day minimum.

Yes – 12 days lets you do Alexandria as a proper 2-night stay rather than a Cairo day trip. That unlocks the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa at unhurried pace, an evening on the corniche, breakfast at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and a slower lunch at Abou Ashraf or the Greek Club. The 2-night Alexandria shape is the most-booked use of 12 days over 10 for American culture-first travelers.

October through April for the temples and Nile cruise – comfortable temperatures and dry. If you're adding the White Desert, December and January are coldest at night (40°F or below at the desert camp) but the sky is clearest. If you're adding the Red Sea, year-round water temperatures hold 75–84°F. We avoid running 12-day southern itineraries in July and August by default; Cairo plus Mediterranean variants work fine.
