Both directions call at the same temples. What changes is the order you meet them in, whether the river is working with you or against you, and which city you are standing in when the cruise ends. Those three things are worth more than they sound.
We book more guests northbound than southbound, and the reasons are operational rather than romantic. Our Aswan and Luxor offices handle both ends of this route, so the recommendation comes from watching how the week actually runs — not from a brochure.
The Nile flows north. Sailing downstream means shorter legs between moorings and more predictable arrival times, which is why the northbound trip is usually one night shorter for the same stops. It is also how the ancient Egyptians moved north — they sailed south against the current and drifted back down.
Southbound, you open at Karnak — the largest religious building ever constructed — and everything after it is smaller. Northbound, the scale builds: Philae, then Kom Ombo, then Edfu, then Karnak at the end of the week, when you have the context to read it.
Abu Simbel is a day trip from Aswan, not Luxor. Northbound it happens before you board, while you are already at that end of the country. Southbound it lands on your final day and means traveling back south after you have already sailed away from it.
Luxor airport and the overnight sleeper train to Cairo are both a short transfer from the mooring. If your Egypt trip continues to Cairo or the Red Sea, finishing here removes a connection.

Southbound is the better call if your international flights land you in Luxor first — forcing a positioning flight to Aswan to save one night on the river is a poor trade. It also suits travelers who would rather finish somewhere quiet: Aswan is the calmer of the two cities, and ending on a felucca at Elephantine Island beats ending in Luxor traffic. And if your dates only fit a Luxor-departure ship, take it. The temples do not change.
We recommend Aswan to Luxor for most travelers. You sail downstream with the current, the temples build toward Karnak as a finale instead of opening with it, and you finish in Luxor where onward flights and the Cairo sleeper train are both close to the dock. Sail southbound if your flights land you in Luxor first, or if you would rather end the trip in the quieter of the two cities.
