Get your bearings

What Saqqara actually is

Saqqara is where it all started. Before Giza, before the smooth-sided pyramids, the architect Imhotep stacked six stone platforms over the tomb of King Djoser and built the world's first monumental stone structure – the Step Pyramid, around 2670 BC. Everything that followed, including the Great Pyramid, descends from this experiment.

The site is the vast necropolis of Memphis, Egypt's first capital, and it's far quieter than Giza. Painted tombs of nobles still carry scenes of daily life in crisp color, and the Serapeum's giant granite sarcophagi sit in the dark. Twenty minutes further south, the Bent and Red Pyramids of Dahshur show the moment, mid-construction, when the Egyptians finally got the geometry right.

What you're really here to see

The landmarks that make Saqqara

The six-tiered Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara 01

The Step Pyramid of Djoser

The oldest large stone building in the world and the ancestor of every pyramid that followed – six tiers rising from the desert, recently restored, with the colonnaded entrance courtyard now open again. The quiet here, compared to Giza, is part of the gift.

1–2 hours

The reclining colossus of Ramses II at Memphis 02

Memphis & the colossus of Ramses

The first capital of a unified Egypt, now mostly returned to palm groves and fields – but its open-air museum holds a vast reclining colossus of Ramses II and a fine alabaster sphinx. A short, atmospheric stop usually paired with Saqqara.

45 minutes

The Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid at Dahshur 03

The pyramids of Dahshur

Twenty minutes south, the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid catch the exact moment the Egyptians learned to build true pyramids. The Red Pyramid can be entered with almost no one else around – the antidote to the Giza crowds.

How many days in Saqqara?

Saqqara is a half-day, but how far south you push is the real choice.

Half day Step Pyramid

Saqqara on its own – the Step Pyramid, the colonnade and a painted noble's tomb, then back to Cairo by lunch.

Half day + + Memphis

Add the open-air museum at Memphis for the colossus of Ramses – an easy combination, both within reach in a morning.

Full day The pyramid story

Pair Saqqara and Dahshur to trace pyramid-building from the first step pyramid to the first true one – a richer day than Giza alone.

Where it fits

Saqqara in your itinerary

Saqqara is the deeper, quieter companion to Giza – the start of the pyramid story.

With Giza

Do Giza for scale and Saqqara for origins; together they tell the whole story of the pyramid.

Add Memphis

The first capital is minutes away – a natural three-part morning of Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur.

Beat the crowds

Saqqara and Dahshur see a fraction of Giza's visitors, with tombs you can have almost to yourself.

Part of Cairo

An easy 45-minute drive south of the city – a half-day before or after the Giza plateau.

3-Day Cairo: Giza, Egyptian Museum & Historic Cairo

3-Day Cairo: Giza, Egyptian Museum & Historic Cairo

This 3-day Cairo package visits the Giza Plateau (Khufu viewpoints), the Egyptian Museum, Coptic and Islamic Cairo, and Khan el-Khalili. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and provide a private Egyptologist, a private air-conditioned vehicle, and daily hotel pickups. We do not automatically include the Khufu pyramid interior; it costs extra on site and many travelers prefer the exterior viewpoints. Unlike large coach tours, we schedule early-morning Giza access to reduce crowds and give more time at each monument. Expect early starts, walking on uneven ancient stone, and limited shade at Giza around midday. Standard site entrance fees are included; Khufu interior, premium tombs or rooms, and gratuities are excluded unless requested.

On request 3 Days
Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis Day Tour

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis Day Tour

Visit Khufu Pyramid, the Great Sphinx, Djoser Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and Ramses II's colossus at Memphis in a single day. We operate private tours only; we do not run mass-bus group departures. Your driver collects you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, and our Egyptologist accompanies all site visits. Unlike many half-day excursions, this itinerary allocates proper time to Saqqara and Memphis rather than a rushed stop. Expect 2–3 hours of walking on uneven stone, limited shade at midday, and transfers that can reach 60 minutes in peak traffic. Standard site entrance fees are included; the Khufu pyramid interior and premium tombs are excluded unless you request them. We arrange cold water, shaded transport, and restaurant suggestions for a flexible midday break.

Bent Pyramid, Dahshur

Bent Pyramid, Dahshur

The Bent Pyramid at Dahshur was built by Pharaoh Sneferu around 2600 BCE and shows a deliberate change of slope during construction. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and organise private visits with one of our Egyptologists rather than placing you on large coach tours. The site is about 40 km south of central Cairo (roughly 45–60 minutes by car, depending on traffic). Unlike the Giza Plateau, Dahshur is usually quieter and allows more time to walk the necropolis. Site entrance is included; interior access is optional and may incur an extra fee. Note the low, steep passages and limited shade at midday.

Imhotep Museum (Saqqara) – Entry Ticket

Imhotep Museum (Saqqara) – Entry Ticket

Entry ticket to the Imhotep Museum at Saqqara, which presents finds from Old Kingdom tombs linked to the Step Pyramid. The museum opened in 2006 and contains chronological displays that help explain Saqqara before you walk the necropolis. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and do not treat the museum as optional: our Egyptologists use it to introduce funerary archaeology, then lead the site visit. Unlike rush Giza–Saqqara day trips that compress interpretation, we recommend 30–60 minutes for the museum plus separate time on the necropolis. Ticket only; guided visits and private transfers from Cairo are available on request.

From $5
Memphis, Sakkara & Dahshur (including Unas Pyramid)

Memphis, Sakkara & Dahshur (including Unas Pyramid)

A full-day visit to Memphis, Sakkara (Saqqara), Dahshur and the Unas Pyramid south of Cairo. See the Step Pyramid of Djoser, Unas Pyramid with its Pyramid Texts, the Bent and Red Pyramids of Sneferu, and the Colossus of Ramses II at Mit Rahina. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator; our Egyptologists brief every visit and can accompany you on-site. We treat Dahshur as a deliberate stop rather than a quick drive-by, because the Bent and Red Pyramids require time to inspect properly. Site entrance fees are included; pyramid interiors and premium tombs are excluded unless explicitly requested. Expect 6–8 hours door-to-door and limited shade at midday.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Memphis & Grand Egyptian Museum Day Tour

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Memphis & Grand Egyptian Museum Day Tour

A private day tour from Cairo visiting Khufu Pyramid exterior, the Great Sphinx, Saqqara necropolis, Memphis and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Our Egyptologist leads the visits and we provide private air-conditioned transport and hotel pickup. We keep 60–90 minutes at Saqqara rather than the 20–30 minutes commonly allotted by large coach tours; that lets you see the Step Pyramid complex and the fine reliefs with time to walk the site. Entrance fees for these standard sites are included; Khufu Pyramid interior tickets, premium tombs, and gratuities are excluded unless you request them. Expect crowds at Giza and limited shade during midday; uneven ancient stone requires sturdy shoes.

We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and operate private visits with our Egyptologists; we do not run large coach tours. Unlike typical Giza stopovers, Saqqara benefits from 2–3 hours on site to inspect the Step Pyramid, the Tomb of Ti, and the Teti pyramid properly. We normally schedule departures between 8:00 and 9:00 to avoid the midday heat; central Cairo hotels are typically a 20–40 minute drive depending on traffic. Standard site entrance fees are included; optional premium tomb permits and special-access areas are excluded. Expect limited shade, uneven stone surfaces, dust, and some low passages inside tombs.

Best time to visit

When to go to Saqqara

Open desert, like Giza – go in the cool months and the cool hours.

October–April · best

Comfortable days for wandering the necropolis (20–28°C) and clear light on the stone. The pleasant season for any Cairo-area site.

May–September · hot

Above 35°C with little shade. Go early; the quiet of Saqqara is at least more bearable than the crowds of Giza in summer.

Mornings

Start early – the light is kind, the tombs stay cool inside, and the painted chambers sit empty before the Giza coaches swing south.

Pair smartly

Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur sit close together; one guided loop covers all three without backtracking.

The practical part

Getting there & around

Close to Cairo, spread out on the ground – the practical part.

01

Getting there

About 45 minutes south of central Cairo by private car. There's no public transport worth using; this is a guided day-trip.

02

Getting around

The necropolis is large and the sites (Saqqara, Memphis, Dahshur) are spread out, so a car with a guide is the only sensible way to link them.

03

Tickets

Separate tickets cover the Step Pyramid complex, individual tombs, the Serapeum and the Dahshur pyramids. We sort the worthwhile ones in advance.

04

Bring

A torch helps in the darker tombs, along with sun protection and water for the open stretches between monuments.

Common questions

Saqqara, answered

01 What is Saqqara famous for? +

The Step Pyramid of Djoser – the world's oldest large stone building and the ancestor of all later pyramids, designed by Imhotep around 2670 BC. Saqqara is also the necropolis of ancient Memphis, full of painted nobles' tombs.

02 Is Saqqara worth visiting if I've seen Giza? +

Very much so. Giza is about scale; Saqqara is about origins – the first pyramid, the best-preserved tomb paintings near Cairo, and a fraction of the crowds. Together they tell the whole story.

03 How far is Saqqara from Cairo? +

About 45 minutes south by car. It's an easy half-day, and pairs naturally with Memphis and the Dahshur pyramids for a fuller morning.

04 Can you go inside the pyramids at Saqqara and Dahshur? +

Yes – parts of the Step Pyramid complex are open, and at nearby Dahshur you can climb into the Red Pyramid, often with almost no one else there. We build the best interiors into the day.

05 Should I combine Saqqara with Memphis and Dahshur? +

If you have the morning, yes. The three sit close together and tell a single story – the first capital, the first step pyramid, and the first true pyramids – in one guided loop.
