Cairo rewards the patient explorer. Beyond the Pyramids that dominate every itinerary, the city's Islamic and Coptic quarters hold 1,400 years of layered history. A day tour from Cairo takes you into this depth – a private Egyptologist guides you past the queues, explains the hieroglyphs, and navigates the Khan el-Khalili bazaar so you leave with treasures rather than tourist tat.

Cairo Day Tours
The Grand Egyptian Museum, Coptic Cairo & Khan el-Khalili in one day
Cairo has 35 private day tours that start at your hotel: the Pyramids and Saqqara, the museums and the old city, food and evening outings, and day trips to Alexandria, Fayoum, the Red Sea coast, Luxor and Abu Simbel. Prices start at $30 per person, and the table below shows each trip with its length.
The best day tour in Cairo is the one you don't have to organize yourself. We've been arranging them, in this country, since 1988.Discovery Tours Egypt · since 1988
Cairo, in the order that makes sense
A full day comfortably covers two or three of the stops below – your guide tailors the mix to your pace, interests and the season.

The Pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx
The only surviving wonder of the ancient world, and the reason most people come to Egypt. Go early: you'll have the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx and the panorama point before the coaches arrive. Interior access and a camel walk are optional add-ons.

The Grand Egyptian Museum
The largest archaeological museum on earth, on the Giza plateau – and the only place to see Tutankhamun's complete 5,000-piece collection together. It pairs naturally with the Pyramids next door, so most full days take in both.

Islamic & Coptic Cairo
The Citadel of Saladin and the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali crown the skyline; below, the Hanging Church and the lanes of Coptic Cairo hold the city's Christian story. A quieter, human-scale counterpoint to the plateau.

Saqqara & Memphis
Egypt's very first pyramid – the Step Pyramid of Djoser – and the open-air remains of Memphis, the country's first capital, half an hour south of Giza. The standout add-on for travelers with the appetite for a longer day.

Khan el-Khalili bazaar
Trading since the 1380s – copper, spice, perfume oils and proper Egyptian coffee. Your guide steers you to the makers rather than the markups, and to El Fishawy, the café that has barely closed in 250 years. A relaxed finish to the day.

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization
Home to the Royal Mummies Hall – 22 kings and queens, including Ramesses II and Hatshepsut, moved here in the 2021 Golden Parade. A hushed, purpose-built gallery in Old Cairo, and the quiet counterpoint to the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Every Cairo day tour at a glance
Pyramids and Giza
Start with the Giza Plateau, then decide how far south to go. Saqqara has the Step Pyramid, Memphis the fallen statue of Ramses II, and Dahshur the Bent and Red Pyramids with far fewer visitors. Camel, horse and quad bike rides run in the desert beside the plateau, and a layover tour fits the Pyramids between two flights.

Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour, Giza Plateau
This half-day tour visits the Giza Plateau, including Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. The Giza Plateau contains those three pyramids and the Great Sphinx. Our Cairo-based Egyptologists lead every visit; we do not run large group bus tours. Unlike shuttle or cruise-day schedules that combine several Cairo sites, we keep this visit focused on the plateau so you have time to walk the causeways and photograph the Sphinx properly. Note the trade-offs: limited shade at midday and uneven ancient stone underfoot. Pyramid interior entry to Khufu/Khafre is excluded unless requested. Operated by a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

Pyramids, Sphinx and Grand Egyptian Museum Day Tour
This full-day excursion visits the Giza Plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum, with guided commentary and lunch included. We provide a licensed Egyptologist, hotel pickup and an air-conditioned vehicle, not large coach tours. Unlike cruise-origin day trips, the excursion starts and finishes at your Cairo or Giza hotel, which keeps transit time to a minimum. The Grand Egyptian Museum visit focuses on the Tutankhamun galleries and major exhibits, while the Giza Plateau visit includes panoramic photo stops and a close-up view of the Great Sphinx.

Pyramids, Sphinx & Egyptian Museum, Cairo Day Tour
See the Giza pyramid complex, the Great Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum in a private day tour from Cairo. We meet you in your hotel lobby and the drive to the Giza Plateau typically takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic. Our Egyptologist accompanies you at Giza, explaining Khufu and Khafre and guiding your route across the plateau. We assign a private Egyptologist rather than a generalist guide, and we avoid large shared coaches so you keep flexibility on timing. Unlike many coach day trips, we allot 90–120 minutes on the plateau. Standard site entrance fees are included; pyramid interiors (Khufu/Khafre), premium tombs, and gratuities are excluded unless requested. Expect limited shade at midday and walking on uneven ancient stone; camel rides are optional and commonly paid locally. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and handle transfers, timing and museum access to reduce line time.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis Day Tour
Visit Khufu Pyramid, the Great Sphinx, Djoser Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and Ramses II's colossus at Memphis in a single day. We operate private tours only; we do not run mass-bus group departures. Your driver collects you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, and our Egyptologist accompanies all site visits. Unlike many half-day excursions, this itinerary allocates proper time to Saqqara and Memphis rather than a rushed stop. Expect 2–3 hours of walking on uneven stone, limited shade at midday, and transfers that can reach 60 minutes in peak traffic. Standard site entrance fees are included; the Khufu pyramid interior and premium tombs are excluded unless you request them. We arrange cold water, shaded transport, and restaurant suggestions for a flexible midday break.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Memphis & Grand Egyptian Museum Day Tour
A private day tour from Cairo visiting Khufu Pyramid exterior, the Great Sphinx, Saqqara necropolis, Memphis and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Our Egyptologist leads the visits and we provide private air-conditioned transport and hotel pickup. We keep 60–90 minutes at Saqqara rather than the 20–30 minutes commonly allotted by large coach tours; that lets you see the Step Pyramid complex and the fine reliefs with time to walk the site. Entrance fees for these standard sites are included; Khufu Pyramid interior tickets, premium tombs, and gratuities are excluded unless you request them. Expect crowds at Giza and limited shade during midday; uneven ancient stone requires sturdy shoes.

Sakkara & Memphis Half-Day Tour from Cairo
This half-day tour visits the Djoser Step Pyramid at Sakkara and the open-air collection at Mit Rahina (Memphis). Our Cairo-based Egyptologist explains Imhotep’s architectural role and the necropolis layout; your driver meets you at the hotel with a name card and private car. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator. We operate private or small-group departures rather than large coach tours, which keeps transit time shorter and visits less crowded. Expect limited shade and uneven ancient stone at Sakkara; bring sun protection and sensible shoes. Standard site entrance fees are included; pyramid-interior access, premium tombs, and gratuities are excluded.

Saqqara, Memphis & Dahshur Day Trip from Cairo – Private, Step, Bent & Red Pyramids
A private day from your Cairo or Giza hotel to the older pyramid fields south of the city. With your own vehicle, driver and Egyptologist guide, you see the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur, the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara and the open-air museum at Memphis. Site tickets, lunch at a local restaurant and bottled water are included.

Giza Pyramids Camel Ride at Sunset – Private, from Cairo or Giza Hotels
A private camel ride in the desert beside the Giza Plateau as the sun goes down, with the pyramids on the skyline. You are picked up at your Cairo or Giza hotel and ride for about one hour with a local camel handler, then stop for tea at a viewpoint. The ride is in the desert next to the plateau, not inside the ticketed pyramid site.

Giza Pyramids Horse Ride – Private Desert Ride, from Cairo or Giza Hotels
A private horse ride in the desert beside the Giza Plateau, with the Pyramids on the skyline, for beginners and experienced riders alike. A driver collects you from your Cairo or Giza hotel, a stable guide matches a horse to your level and rides with you for about an hour and a half, and tea at the stables is included. The ride is in the desert beside the plateau, not inside the ticketed site.

Giza Desert Quad Bike Ride – Private, Pyramids View, from Cairo or Giza Hotels
A private quad bike ride in the desert beside the Giza Plateau, with the pyramids on the skyline. You are picked up at your Cairo or Giza hotel, get a safety briefing and a practice lap, then follow a lead rider for about one hour, with stops for the view. Riders must be at least 16. The ride is in the desert next to the plateau, not inside the ticketed pyramid site.

Cairo Layover Tour from Cairo Airport – Private, Giza Pyramids & Sphinx
A private tour for travelers with a long stop at Cairo International Airport. A guide meets you in the arrivals hall after passport control, drives you to the Giza Plateau for the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx, and brings you back to the airport in time for your onward flight. Your own vehicle, driver and Egyptologist, the Giza ticket, a light lunch and bottled water are included.
Museums and old Cairo
Three museums cover the story from different sides: the Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza, the older Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, and the Civilization Museum with the royal mummies. Old Cairo adds the Citadel, the Coptic churches and the lanes of the bazaar.

Grand Egyptian Museum Half-Day Tour
This half-day tour visits the Grand Egyptian Museum's core galleries, including the Tutankhamun collection, in a focused three-hour visit. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist guides explain the chronology of objects and the funerary assemblages on display. We treat GEM as a stand-alone visit rather than bundling it with the Giza Plateau; that lets our Egyptologist explain objects without rushing. Unlike large coach tours, we keep the itinerary to highlights and allow time for questions. Trade-offs: three hours cannot cover every gallery; guests wanting detailed study should upgrade to a full-day option. Private hotel transfer and standard entrance fees are included; special-access areas or premium exhibits are excluded unless requested.

Egyptian Museum Half-Day Tour, Cairo
Visit the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square with a private Egyptologist; standard museum entrance and central Cairo hotel transfer are included. The guided visit lasts about three hours. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist tailors the route to the museum’s current displays, prioritizing Tutankhamun material when it is on public display. We don't run large coach groups; we keep numbers small and the Egyptologist stays with your party for the full visit. Unlike many half-day bus tours, we handle tickets and passport photocopies to minimise queue time. The museum's galleries can be crowded and some rooms are compact; an early start reduces waits.

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Cairo
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat presents Egypt’s material culture from prehistoric times to the present. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologists lead private, timed visits that typically last 2–3 hours. Unlike operators who squeeze several Cairo museums into one afternoon, we allocate enough time for the Mummies Hall, the chronological galleries, and conservation displays. We arrange pick-up from central Cairo and short orientation on arrival. Trade-offs: the Mummies Hall uses low light and offers limited seating, so expect standing and brief queues during peak season.

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization & Egyptian Museum Day Tour
This Egyptologist-led day tour visits the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and the Egyptian Museum Tahrir in central Cairo. We don't run large coach-group tours; we use a private car and one of our Egyptologists stays with your party. Unlike large-group museum visits, we focus on the NMEC's chronological halls and the Egyptian Museum's major displays, including the Royal Mummies Gallery and Khufu-era objects. Standard site entrance fees and hotel pickup are included. Expect security checks, extended standing and limited seating; museums are busiest midday, so a morning start reduces queues. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and tailor commentary to your interests.

Cairo’s Old Treasures: Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo & Khan el‑Khalili
See the Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo and Khan el‑Khalili with a Cairo‑based Egyptologist and private car. We don't run group bus tours; we travel by private car and normally start at the museum to avoid the busiest afternoon hours. Standard site entrance fees are included unless stated otherwise. Your Egyptologist highlights key objects in the Egyptian Museum and then guides you through medieval streets and market passages in Islamic Cairo, explaining architecture and social history. Trade-offs: Khan el‑Khalili is lively and congested, with limited shade and uneven cobbles; comfortable shoes and sun protection are essential. We arrange hotel pickup and bottled water.

Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour
Explore medieval Islamic Cairo and Old Coptic Cairo on one private day tour led by a licensed Egyptian tour operator's Egyptologist. We visit the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Mamluk-era Sultan Hassan Mosque and the adjacent Al-Rifa'i Mosque, then the Hanging Church and the Church of St Sergius in Old Cairo. We do not run large coach tours; this is a private car and Egyptologist itinerary. Expect narrow streets, uneven steps, and limited shade at midday.

Coptic Cairo Half-Day Tour
This private half-day tour visits Coptic Cairo's core sites: the Hanging Church, Church of St. Sergius (Abu Serga), Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Coptic Museum. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and provide a private guide and air-conditioned minivan with hotel pickup in central Cairo. We don't run group bus tours; our itineraries avoid coach arrivals and allow 45–60 minutes in the Coptic Museum. Unlike combined pyramid-and-Coptic half-days, this keeps focus on Old Cairo so each site is seen at a measured pace. Trade-offs: limited shade, modest dress is required for religious sites, and some churches have low ceilings and stairs. The tour lasts about 3–4 hours.

Salah al-Din Citadel Half-Day Tour, Cairo
This private half-day tour visits the Salah al-Din Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo; it typically lasts three to four hours. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist outlines the Citadel's 12th-century origins and Muhammad Ali Pasha's 19th-century mosque. We do not run large coach-group itineraries on this route; the tour is private with a driver and car. Unlike visits that focus only on the mosque, we include a walk on the Citadel ramparts and an optional visit to the National Military Museum when open. Expect limited shade at midday, uneven stone underfoot, and a routine security check at the entrance.
Food and evenings
Cairo wakes up again after dark. Eat your way through downtown with a guide, see the city lights from the Cairo Tower and walk Khan el-Khalili, take a dinner boat on the Nile, or watch the sound and light show at the Pyramids.

Cairo Food Tour by Night – Private Tasting Walk from Your Cairo Hotel
A private evening in downtown Cairo with a local guide, picked up at your Cairo or Giza hotel. You taste koshari, falafel and ful, grilled meats, fresh juice and Egyptian sweets at places Cairenes use. All tastings and soft drinks at the stops are included, along with bottled water.

You go up the Cairo Tower for the view of the city lights, drive along the Nile corniche and across Qasr El Nil Bridge, walk the lanes of Khan el-Khalili at night, and stop for tea at a traditional cafe in the bazaar. The tower ticket, tea and bottled water are included. Dinner is not.
Nile Dinner Cruise & Evening Show, Cairo
Board a licensed Nile boat in Cairo for a two- to three-hour seated dinner with live tanoura, belly dance and an Arabic band. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we arrange private or small-group charters rather than coach-based package transfers. Unlike riverside restaurants, the cruise shows Cairo landmarks such as the Cairo Tower and the Citadel from the water. Expect loud live music, limited space on some boats, and a late finish that can mean Cairo traffic after disembarkation. During Ramadan show content, alcohol service and timings often change; tell us your travel dates so we can confirm logistics.

Pyramids Sound & Light Show, Giza Plateau
See the Pyramids Sound & Light Show on the Giza Plateau, with English narration about Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The show runs approximately 60–75 minutes after sunset. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we include private transfers, show tickets and audio headsets, plus an English-speaking driver. Distinctive POV: we do not run large coach-group evening tours – we use private cars timed to arrive at least 20 minutes before the show to avoid queues. Trade-offs: the event finishes late, seating is tiered stone with limited shelter, and audio is amplified across the plateau.

Alexandria Day Tour, incl. Wadi Natrun Monasteries
A full-day private tour from Cairo visiting Alexandria’s major sites and two Coptic monasteries in Wadi Natrun. We travel by private vehicle with one Egyptologist for the whole day; we do not run coach-bus group schedules. Moderate walking on uneven ancient stone and monastery courtyards is required.

The drive is about 220 km (roughly 2.5–3 hours) depending on Cairo traffic. Our Egyptologist accompanies the visits; our driver meets you in Cairo and handles transfers and luggage. Carry 1.5L minimum. Sites are in full sun by 10am – the early start isn't just about crowds, it's about comfort.

Cairo day tours, answered
- Can I see the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in one day?
- Yes – it's our most popular Cairo day tour. The Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum are minutes apart on the Giza plateau, so a full private day (8–10 hours) comfortably covers both with a licensed Egyptologist. Add Saqqara and Memphis if you want a longer day.
- How many days do you need in Cairo?
- Two full days covers the essentials: one for Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, and one for Islamic and Coptic Cairo plus the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. A third day lets you add Saqqara, Memphis and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (home to the Royal Mummies).
- Is hotel pickup included?
- Yes. Pickup and drop-off at your Cairo hotel (or Nile cruise dock, where relevant) are included at no extra cost. Your guide meets you in the lobby; if your plans change, the local office that arranged the day tour can adjust it on the day.
- When is the best time to visit Cairo?
- October to April is the most comfortable season, with warm days and cool evenings ideal for sightseeing. May to September is hotter, so day tours start early to beat the midday heat – and you'll often find fewer crowds and lower prices. We run day tours in Cairo year-round.
- Is it safe, and are families welcome?
- Yes on both counts. We've operated in Egypt since 1988 from offices nationwide, with 24/7 in-country support, and day tours run with our own vetted guides and drivers. Families are very welcome – guides adjust the pace and content for children, and we can arrange car seats and shorter itineraries.
- Is Dahshur worth adding to Saqqara and Memphis?
- Yes, if you have a full day. Dahshur has the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, and it is much quieter than Giza. The three sites sit along the same road south of Cairo, so one private day covers them all.
- How do the Luxor and Abu Simbel day trips by flight work?
- You book online and we check flight seats before confirming. No payment is taken until we confirm availability and the final price. Both are long days that start before dawn, with a guide and car waiting when you land.
- Can I see the Pyramids on a layover at Cairo airport?
- Usually, if you have about eight hours or more between flights and can enter Egypt on a visa. Your guide meets you after immigration and plans to have you back at the airport three hours before your next flight.
- Are the camel, horse and quad bike rides inside the Pyramids site?
- No. They run in the open desert beside the Giza Plateau, with the Pyramids in view. That keeps them outside the ticketed area, so no entry ticket is needed for the ride itself.
- Which trips need to be requested rather than booked?
- The quad bike ride and the two-day White Desert trip are on request. Send your dates, and we confirm availability and the final price before you pay anything.
