02Overview
A first look
Some trips are all museums and coaches. This one gets you moving. You land in Cairo and spend a day outside the city at the Fayoum lakes and the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan. Then you fly to Luxor and ride a quad bike across the West Bank landscape as the sun goes down.
The next morning you float over the Nile Valley in a hot air balloon, then see the Valley of the Kings and the other West Bank temples. You drive to Aswan, sail a felucca at sunset and spend a long day on the road to Abu Simbel. A flight takes you back to Cairo for your trip home. We book every flight, transfer and hotel night. Early starts are part of the deal, so this tour suits people who enjoy them.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
7 Days / 6 Nights · Cairo · Fayoum Oasis · Wadi El Rayan · Luxor · Luxor West Bank · Valley of the Kings
- 1
A representative meets you at Cairo Airport, helps you through the arrival hall and drives you to your hotel, about an hour away. There is nothing else planned. Rest, swim or walk around the neighborhood, because tomorrow starts early.
- 2
Today you leave Cairo for the Fayoum oasis, a green basin southwest of the city. Your private vehicle and English-speaking guide take you to Lake Qarun, then on to the lakes and waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan, and past the old waterwheels of Fayoum city. Lunch is at a local restaurant. This is a day trip of about 10 hours, with plenty of time in the car, and you sleep in your Cairo hotel again.
- 3
After breakfast you are driven to Cairo Airport for the flight to Luxor, about an hour in the air. A driver takes you to your hotel. The sightseeing is arranged around the flight, so the afternoon is yours. Late in the day a private quad bike ride takes you out across Luxor's West Bank, timed so you are riding as the sun sets.
- 4
Before dawn you go up in a hot air balloon over Luxor, if the weather allows. Back on the ground, an English-speaking Egyptologist guide takes you across to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon and Medinet Habu. Transport and entrance fees are included. It is a full day, so expect to be tired and happy by evening.
- 5
A private car takes you from your Luxor hotel to your hotel in Aswan, a drive along the Nile that makes up most of the day. Once you have settled in, you step aboard a felucca, the traditional sailing boat, for a sunset ride on the river.
- 6
A full day, starting very early. You travel by road from Aswan to Abu Simbel to see the great temples of Ramesses II and his queen Nefertari, carved into the rock. The guide, the transport and your entrance fees are included. You return to Aswan in the afternoon, with the evening free in the same hotel.
- 7
After breakfast you are driven to Aswan Airport for the flight to Cairo, about an hour. A private transfer then takes you from Cairo to the international airport for your flight home, arranged around your flight time. There is no hotel night in Cairo on this tour, so choose your departure flight with the domestic leg in mind (see the questions below).

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
At Wadi El Rayan, walk to the top of the waterfalls viewpoint early; the view over the lakes and dunes is the best part of the day.
- 02
For the Luxor balloon, wear closed shoes and layers; it is chilly on the ground at pickup and warms quickly once the sun rises.
- 03
Cover your nose and mouth with a light scarf on the quad bike; the West Bank desert kicks up fine dust that gets everywhere.
- 04
At Medinet Habu, look up at the painted ceilings in the first court; the colors survive well and most groups skip them.

Accessibility
Who can join this
This is a moderately demanding tour with early starts. There is walking on uneven stone and sand at the temples, and the quad bike, balloon basket and felucca all involve climbing in and out. The Fayoum and Abu Simbel days are long drives. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us about any mobility or health needs when you book and we will tell you honestly which activities are suitable and which can be swapped.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The tour uses two domestic flights and private road transfers, and the vehicle type can vary, so we do not claim a carbon saving. The Fayoum and Wadi El Rayan day is a protected landscape: we ask guests to take their rubbish with them and to stay on marked tracks. Guides, drivers and activity operators are local to Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, so most of the money you spend stays where you travel.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the domestic flights included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Luxor on day 3 and from Aswan to Cairo on day 7 are booked for you and included in the price. Flight times are set by the airline schedule. International flights are not included.02Will I make my international flight?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed domestic flight can cost you the connection. We would prefer you spend one last night in Cairo. If you must fly from Aswan to Cairo and connect on the same day, choose a late-evening or night international flight, and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.03How fit do I need to be?
Moderately fit. Days 2, 4 and 6 start early and run long, there is walking on uneven stone and sand, and you ride a quad bike and climb into a balloon basket and a felucca. You do not need to be an athlete.04What if the balloon does not fly?
The sunrise balloon depends on the weather, and wind can stop flights. If it does not go, we tell you on the morning. Ask us before you travel what happens in that case.05Is the quad bike ride safe for beginners?
It is a private ride, so it moves at your pace. You do not need to have ridden before. Tell us your age and any health concerns at booking.06Is Abu Simbel a long day?
Yes. It is a full day by road from Aswan with an early start. The temples are worth it for most guests. Sleep when you can in the car.07Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels for your dates. The itinerary is the same at every standard.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks and meals other than those stated, the Khufu pyramid interior and premium tombs.09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for quad biking and temple walking. Summers are very hot in Luxor and Aswan, so we start early.
