02Overview
A first look
This tour gives you the whole of Egypt's story and then lets you breathe. The first nine days are the classics. You see Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum and old Cairo, fly to Aswan, and spend three nights on a Nile cruise ship that stops at Philae, Abu Simbel, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor and Karnak. Two more nights in Luxor take in the Valley of the Kings and Dendera.
Then two short flights carry you to Sinai. Seven nights in one Sharm El Sheikh hotel means no more packing. Day trips take you into Ras Mohammed National Park, up Mount Sinai for sunrise, out to Dahab and across the water to Tiran Island. A few of those days are hard work, and we say so below. We book the flights, the transfers, the hotels and the cruise cabin. You pick the standard of hotel and ship; the sightseeing does not change.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
16 Days / 15 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Grand Egyptian Museum · Aswan · Abu Simbel · Kom Ombo
- 1
A representative meets you at Cairo Airport and drives you to your hotel, about an hour away. Take the rest of the day easy. Later you are collected for a three-hour dinner cruise on the Nile: you board at golden hour, eat from an open buffet and watch a live show while the city lights slide by. A private vehicle brings you back afterward.
- 2
Your guide collects you at the hotel for a full eight-hour day. First comes the Giza Plateau, where the pyramids and the Great Sphinx stand; allow four to six hours for the whole visit. Lunch follows with a view. The afternoon belongs to the Grand Egyptian Museum. Your Egyptologist guide, the entrance fees and the air-conditioned vehicle are all included.
- 3
A gentler day, about six hours, in the medieval and early Christian city. You see the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques, then climb to Saladin's Citadel and the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali. After a lunch break in Old Cairo you visit the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. Your private Egyptologist, the vehicle and the mosque and Citadel fees are included.
- 4
You transfer to Cairo Airport for the short flight south to Aswan. A driver meets you there and takes you to the river. The cruise sightseeing starts the same day with Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk. You then join your ship, settle into your cabin and eat dinner on board. The Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transport for the sightseeing are included.
- 5
This is a very early start. A road trip to Abu Simbel leaves from the moored ship, so you see the two great rock temples of Ramesses II in the morning light. It is a full excursion, and you are back on board for lunch. The ship then casts off and sails north, and you visit the double temple of Kom Ombo. Guide, entrance fees and transport are included.
- 6
Today's first stop is the Temple of Edfu, dedicated to Horus. Further along the river you reach Luxor, where your guide shows you Luxor Temple and Karnak, including the Sacred Lake. It is a packed day with a lot of walking on stone. You sleep on the ship for the last time. Entrance fees, the guide and transport are covered.
- 7
After breakfast you leave the ship and cross to the West Bank. There you see the Valley of the Kings, with three tombs included, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon. Your guide, the fees and the transport are included. In the afternoon a transfer takes you into downtown Luxor and your hotel.
- 8
A half-day drive north takes you to the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, about six hours in all with the road, with lunch at a local restaurant. Your private Egyptologist and vehicle come with you. Back in Luxor, the museum visit is the second half of the day: a calm hour or two among statues and objects from the temples you have seen.
- 9
This is a travel day. You transfer from Luxor to the airport and fly to Cairo, then on to Sharm El Sheikh. Flight times follow the airline schedule, so we plan nothing else for the day. A private transfer takes you from Sharm airport to your hotel, where you stay for the next seven nights. Your bags are included on both flights.
- 10
A minibus shared with other guests collects you for the drive to Ras Mohammed National Park at the tip of Sinai. The trip lasts about six hours. You swim and snorkel, with mask and snorkel provided, and visit the Magic Lake. A picnic lunch with water is included, and so is the park fee. An English-speaking guide goes with you.
- 11
This is the hardest day of the tour, about 17 hours, and it is the only thing planned. You leave in the night and climb Mount Sinai in the dark and cold for about three hours, with a Bedouin mountain guide. The last 750 steps are cut into the rock and are done on foot. You watch the sun come up, walk down, have breakfast, then visit St Catherine's Monastery. You get back late and tired.
- 12
After the Sinai night, nothing is early today. Sleep in and have a slow breakfast. Later in the day a minibus takes you to the harbor for a semi-submarine and glass-bottom boat trip, about three hours in total, with roughly 90 minutes on the water over the reef. A soft drink and water are included. The rest of the day is yours.
- 13
A long jeep day of about 11 hours, and the only plan for today. You ride in a shared jeep with a driver and an English-speaking guide. A Bedouin guide leads you through the Colored Canyon. Then come the Blue Hole and Dahab, with mask and snorkel provided and lunch at a restaurant on the shore. Roads are rough in places, so wear shoes you can walk in.
- 14
Dahab was a long day, so today begins late. Use the morning at the hotel pool or the beach. In the late afternoon a minibus takes you on a four-hour city tour: the Old Market, the Al Sahaba Mosque and SOHO Square. A local English-speaking guide comes with you, and bottled water is provided.
- 15
A boat shared with other guests takes you across the strait to Tiran Island for about eight hours on and off the water. A snorkeling guide leads the swims, and mask, snorkel and fins are provided. Lunch is served on board with soft drinks and water. Marine park fees are covered. It is a good last day by the sea.
- 16
After breakfast you check out. A private transfer takes you to Sharm El Sheikh Airport, and our representative helps with your luggage. International flights are not included in the tour, so book yours to suit your hotel check-out. If you would like an easier last day, ask us about an extra night.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Pack a headtorch and warm layers for the Mount Sinai sunrise, as the pre-dawn start is cold even in warmer months.
- 02
Take your sea-sickness remedy before the Tiran Island boat day if you are prone to it, as open water can get lively.
- 03
Wear closed shoes for the Ras Mohammed reef walk, since the Magic Lake path is rocky and the sun beats down.
- 04
Pack a lightweight cover-up for the Abu Simbel road day from the ship, as the desert drive is bright and warm.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Travelers who want a full Egypt trip that ends by the Red Sea instead of in a city. A good fit for active couples, friends and adult families who are comfortable with a few early starts and some hard physical days.
Maybe not, if
- Young children on the Mount Sinai day, travelers with knee, heart or breathing problems, anyone needing step-free access, and those who want an easy pace all the way through.
Honest assessment
Real trade-offs from our experience managing this tour.
Highlights
- Pyramids, Abu Simbel, a Nile cruise and Mount Sinai in one itinerary
- Seven nights in a single Sharm hotel, so no repacking in the second half
- Flights, transfers, fees and guides handled for you
Things to Consider
- Day 11 is about 17 hours with a night climb
- Day 13 is about 11 hours by jeep, and day 5 starts very early
- Most Sinai day trips are shared with other guests, not private
Where it fits
A strong choice for travelers who want history first and sea afterward. Pick a different tour if the Mount Sinai night climb and the long jeep day sound like too much.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Most Egypt tours end in Luxor or Cairo. This one adds a week in Sinai with a sunrise climb of Mount Sinai, reef trips and Dahab, with all three domestic flights booked for you. Hotel and ship standard is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

Children & families
Children are welcome on the Nile and Cairo days. Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so transport, guiding and meals are charged at the adult rate at any age; hotel, cabin and excursion prices depend on the child's age, and we give you the exact figure when you tell us the age at booking. The Mount Sinai day, about 17 hours with a climb in the dark, is not suitable for young children. Talk to us before you book if you are traveling with kids and we will suggest what to swap.
Accessibility
Who can join this
Most days involve a lot of walking on uneven ground. The Nile temples and the Valley of the Kings have steps, sand and long open stretches with little shade, and some tomb passages are narrow. Boarding the ship and the boats involves a gangway or steps. Mount Sinai is the hardest day: about three hours uphill in the dark and the cold, and the last 750 rock steps are on foot. We do not recommend it for young children or for anyone with knee, heart or breathing problems. The Dahab day and the Tiran Island day involve a jeep on rough tracks and getting on and off a boat. Tell us your needs when you book and we will say honestly which days suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
This tour uses three domestic flights, a Nile cruise ship, road transfers and day trips by minibus, jeep and boat, so we make no claim of a carbon saving. Seven nights in one Sharm El Sheikh hotel keeps moving around to a minimum. Ras Mohammed, Tiran Island and the Dahab area are protected, and the fees we pay go toward their upkeep. We ask guests to bring a refillable bottle, to keep off the coral and to leave nothing behind on the mountain.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01How hard is the Mount Sinai day?
It is the hardest day of the tour. The excursion takes about 17 hours. You climb for about three hours in the dark and cold, and the last 750 steps are cut in the rock and done on foot. Then you visit St Catherine's Monastery. It is not for young children, or for anyone with bad knees or heart or breathing problems. Bring a headlamp and warm layers.02Will I make my international flight home?
Our domestic flights and your international ticket are separate bookings. On day 16 there is no domestic flight at all: you go from your Sharm hotel by road to the airport. Even so, book a flight that leaves later in the day, take travel insurance that covers missed connections, and ask us about an extra night in Sharm if you prefer an easy last morning.03Which domestic flights are included?
Cairo to Aswan on day 4, then Luxor to Cairo and Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh on day 9. Baggage of 23 kg and taxes are included on the day 9 flights. Flight times are set by the airline, so we do not plan other sightseeing on those days.04How does Abu Simbel work on the cruise?
On the second cruise day you leave very early by road from the moored ship, see the temples, and are back on board for lunch. The ship then sails north and you visit Kom Ombo. Philae and the High Dam are on the afternoon of the first day.05Which ship and hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the ship and hotels for your dates. The sightseeing is the same at every standard.06Are the Sinai day trips private?
Most of them are shared. Ras Mohammed, Mount Sinai, the semi-submarine, the Dahab jeep day, the city tour and Tiran Island use vehicles or boats shared with other guests. The Cairo, Nile and Luxor sightseeing uses a private Egyptologist.07Can I snorkel if I am not a strong swimmer?
Snorkeling is part of the Ras Mohammed, Dahab and Tiran Island days, and you can stay on the shore or the boat if you prefer. Mask and snorkel are provided. Tell your guide how comfortable you are in the water.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides, drivers and ship staff, drinks other than those stated, the Khufu pyramid interior, premium tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and travel insurance.09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and best for the Nile sightseeing. Summer is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, and early starts matter. Mount Sinai is cold before dawn in every season.
