Prices start at $3,531 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
Most Egypt tours move every day or two. This one does not. You stay three nights in Cairo, three in Luxor, four on a Nile cruise ship and two in Aswan, and you unpack only four times in two weeks. Most days hold one main sight, or two shorter visits with time between them.
The route runs from the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, south by flight to Luxor, then by ship up the river to Aswan, with Abu Simbel on a day of its own. A second flight brings you back to Cairo for a last night before you fly home. We book the flights, the transfers, your hotels and your cabin. You choose the standard of hotel and ship when you book, and the sightseeing stays the same.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
14 Days / 13 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Islamic Cairo · Luxor · Deir el-Medina · Karnak Temple
- 1
A representative meets you at Cairo Airport and drives you to your hotel, about an hour away. Settle in and rest. Later you can set out on a private tasting walk that starts from your hotel door, a gentle first look at Cairo's street food after dark. Nothing else is planned, so you can go to bed early if the journey was long.
- 2
This is the longest day in Cairo, about 8 hours, and the one most guests remember. Your driver collects you at the hotel and your Egyptologist takes you onto the Giza Plateau to see the pyramids and the Great Sphinx. Lunch is at a restaurant with a view. In the afternoon you walk through the Grand Egyptian Museum.
The guide, the entrance fees and the vehicle are all included, and you are back at your hotel to rest.
- 3
A slow morning at the hotel, then an afternoon pickup for a half day in medieval Cairo. You visit the Citadel of Saladin and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, walk through the old streets of Islamic Cairo and finish in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. A licensed Egyptologist guides you, and the private vehicle and entrance fees are included. You return to the hotel for your third night in Cairo.
- 4
After breakfast you are driven to Cairo Airport for the flight to Luxor, about an hour in the air. Flight times follow the airline schedule, and the day is arranged around them. A driver meets you in Luxor and takes you to your hotel. The afternoon visit is the Luxor Museum, a half day among statues and objects from the city's temples and tombs. Luxor is your base for three nights.
- 5
Two half days on the West Bank, across the river from Luxor, without the big crowds of the best-known valley. One visit is Deir el-Medina and the Tombs of the Nobles, where the painted walls show everyday life. The other is the Valley of the Queens. Your Egyptologist guides you, and the guide, entrance fees and transport are included. The Valley of the Kings itself comes later, on the cruise.
- 6
A half day at the Mummification Museum with a private licensed Egyptologist. The private vehicle picks you up at your hotel, and the museum ticket is included. The rest of the day is yours. In the evening a horse carriage takes you for a private ride through Luxor, past the local market and on to Luxor Temple by night. You return to your hotel, and tomorrow you join the ship.
- 7
You check out of the hotel and join your Nile cruise ship in Luxor. The sightseeing package begins at once with Karnak, the largest temple complex in Egypt, including a visit to the Sacred Lake. The package also lists Luxor Temple on this day. Your Egyptologist guides you, and the entrance fees and transport are included. Lunch and dinner are on board, and the ship is your home for four nights.
- 8
The cruise package takes you across to the West Bank for the Colossi of Memnon, the Valley of the Kings, with three tombs included, and the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. Your Egyptologist is with you, and entrance fees and transport are covered.
Later you can take a private motorboat from the ship to Banana Island, about three hours, with fresh fruit, mint tea and water, and the river turning gold at sunset.
- 9
Today the ship moves upriver and you go ashore twice. The Temple of Horus at Edfu is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. The Temple of Kom Ombo, shared by two gods, stands close to the water. Your Egyptologist guides both visits, with entrance fees and transport included. Between the stops you can sit on deck and watch the river valley go by.
- 10
In Aswan your guide takes you to Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in its granite quarry. Entrance fees and transport are included. Later there is a visit to a Nubian village, with transfers by boat and vehicle and an English-speaking guide. You return to the ship for your last night on board.
- 11
After breakfast you say goodbye to the ship, and a driver takes you to your hotel in Aswan. The cruise sightseeing package has nothing more to show on this day, and no tour is booked. Use the afternoon for the river, the corniche or simply a long rest before tomorrow's big day. Aswan is your base for two nights.
- 12
A full day for one site. You travel from Aswan to Abu Simbel by road, visit the two great temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari, and return to Aswan the same day. The entrance fees are included. Because it is the one big outing of the week, nothing else is planned around it. Eat a good breakfast and bring water and a hat.
- 13
A last morning in Aswan: a private half day at Kalabsha Temple and the Nubian Museum. Then you are driven to Aswan Airport for the flight to Cairo, about an hour. The flight follows the airline schedule, and we arrange the visit around it. A driver meets you in Cairo and takes you to your hotel.
We build in this final Cairo night on purpose, so a delayed internal flight cannot cost you your flight home.
- 14
Your last visit is a guided half day at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, about four hours, with its main exhibition hall and the Royal Mummies Hall. The guide, entrance fees and a set lunch are included. A private vehicle then takes you from the museum area to Cairo Airport for your flight home. Plan your departure for the afternoon or evening so the museum visit is not rushed.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
On the horse-carriage evening, keep your phone ready as Luxor Temple glows under floodlights after dark; it is a memorable photo.
- 02
Deir el-Medina, the artisans' village, has tomb paintings whose colors stay vivid; go slowly and let your eyes adjust to the lower light.
- 03
Bring a refillable water bottle and sun hat for Kalabsha Temple, which has little shade around its open courtyards.
- 04
Arrive hungry for the Cairo food walk on day 1, go lightly on lunch beforehand, and try the street staples your guide suggests.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Travelers with two weeks who want to see Egypt's main sites without moving every day. Suited to couples, friends and solo travelers who are comfortable walking over uneven ground and taking two short flights.
Maybe not, if
- Travelers who need step-free access to every site, or who want a fast tour with a new place each day.
Honest assessment
Real trade-offs from our experience managing this tour.
Highlights
- Three nights each in Cairo and Luxor, so very little repacking
- Abu Simbel on a day of its own, with no other sights that day
- Both domestic flights, all transfers and a spare final night in Cairo handled for you
Things to Consider
- Day 2 and Day 12 are long days
- Uneven stone, steps and little shade at the major sites
- Day 2 and Day 12 are the only full-day outings
Where it fits
A good fit for a two-week trip where the pace matters as much as the list. Abu Simbel and the Grand Egyptian Museum are both included.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Many Egypt tours cover the same sights in 8 to 10 days by changing base nearly every day. This tour spends fourteen days on a similar route, with three or four nights per place and one main sight a day. Hotel and ship standard is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

Accessibility
Who can join this
Even at a slow pace, the sites involve walking on uneven stone, sand and steps, with little shade at Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel. Tomb passages are narrow. Boarding the ship and boats on the Nile means a gangway and steps. Day 12 to Abu Simbel is a full day by road. Our vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
This tour uses two domestic flights, a Nile cruise ship and private road transfers, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Staying several nights in each place means fewer transfers than a fast itinerary. Guiding and day tours are arranged through local suppliers in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, so much of what you spend stays in those cities. We ask guests to carry a refillable water bottle and to keep their hands off painted tomb walls.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01What makes this a slow travel tour of Egypt?
You stay longer in each place: three nights in Cairo, three in Luxor, four on the Nile and two in Aswan. Most days have one main sight or two shorter visits, with free time between them. The only long outing is Abu Simbel on Day 12.02Are the domestic flights included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Luxor on Day 4 and from Aswan to Cairo on Day 13 are booked for you, with luggage allowance and taxes. Times depend on the airline schedule. International flights are not included.03Will I make my international flight?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed domestic flight can cost you the connection. That is why we end the tour with one more night in Cairo. If you must fly to Cairo and connect on the same day, choose a late-evening or night international flight. Take travel insurance that covers missed connections.04How many nights are on the Nile cruise?
Four nights on board, from Luxor to Aswan, on full board. The other nine nights are in hotels with breakfast: three in Cairo, three in Luxor, two in Aswan and a final night in Cairo.05Which hotels and cruise ship will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels and ship for your dates. The route and sightseeing are the same at every standard.06Is Abu Simbel included?
Yes. On Day 12 you travel to Abu Simbel by road from your Aswan hotel and back the same day. It has a day to itself and entrance fees are included.07Is the Grand Egyptian Museum included?
Yes. It is part of the Giza day on Day 2, with the pyramids, the Sphinx and lunch. The entrance fees to the plateau and the museum are included.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides, drivers and ship staff, drinks and meals other than those stated, and travel insurance.09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for walking around sites. Summers are very hot in Luxor and Aswan, so outings start early.
