Prices start at $2,903 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
This tour builds a trip in three parts. First comes Cairo: a sunset felucca on the Nile, the Pyramids of Giza with the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, and a day among the older pyramids of Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. Then you fly to Aswan and live aboard a Nile cruise ship for three nights, sailing north to Luxor past the great temples.
The last part is the rest you will want by then. A long drive takes you from Luxor to Marsa Alam, a quiet stretch of the southern Red Sea coast, where you spend five nights with boat trips for snorkeling, a national park beach and an evening of camels and stars. We book every flight, transfer, hotel night and your cruise cabin. You pick the standard of hotel and ship when you book, and we confirm the properties for your dates.
What lingers
- 01A sunset felucca ride on the Nile on your first evening in Cairo
- 02Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum with an Egyptologist

- 04Three nights on a Nile cruise ship from Aswan to Luxor, full board

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
12 Days / 11 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Saqqara · Dahshur · Aswan · Philae Temple
- 1
A representative meets you after you clear the terminal and sees you through to a private car for the roughly one-hour ride to your hotel. Once you have settled in, you head to the river for a sunset sail in a traditional felucca, the wooden sailboats that have worked the Nile for centuries. Nothing else is planned, which leaves you free to recover from your flight and eat wherever you like.
- 2
Your private Egyptologist and driver collect you from your hotel for about eight hours of Cairo's headline sights. The Giza Plateau comes first: the three great pyramids, then the Sphinx up close. You cross the city for a lunch with a view, then spend the afternoon among the treasures at the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, with a tea or coffee break to rest your feet.
Your guide, the vehicle, the entrance fees and lunch are all covered.
- 3
Today goes back further than Giza, to the places where pyramid building was worked out. With a private English-speaking Egyptologist you visit Saqqara, home of the stepped pyramid, then Memphis, Egypt's first capital, and finally Dahshur, where the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid stand in quiet desert.
Entrance tickets, bottled water and a lunch at a local restaurant are included, and the day runs about eight hours from hotel to hotel.
- 4
A car takes you to the airport for the one-hour flight south to Aswan, where a driver waits to take you to the river. This is the first day of your cruise sightseeing package, so an English-speaking Egyptologist, the entrance fees and the transport are included. You see the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk still lying in its quarry, and Philae, the island temple of Isis.
Then you board the ship, find your cabin and have dinner on board. Flight times are set by the airline schedule, so the order of the afternoon can shift a little.
- 5
The ship moves downstream through the day, and you step off for the Temple of Kom Ombo, a double temple dedicated to Sobek and Horus that sits on a bend of the river. Your Egyptologist guides the visit, with the entrance fee and transport already paid. Back on board there is time for the sun deck, where farmland, palms and village life drift by the rail.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on the ship.
- 6
A full day with your guide. You visit the Temple of Edfu, then Luxor Temple, and then Karnak, including a walk to the Sacred Lake. In the evening you go to the Sound and Light Show at Karnak, a two-hour performance with admission included. It is the busiest day of the cruise, so the timings follow the ship's schedule and the cruise team will confirm them on board. Your last night is on the ship.
- 7
After breakfast you leave the ship and cross to the West Bank with your Egyptologist. The Valley of the Kings comes first, where your ticket covers three tombs, followed by Queen Hatshepsut's terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari and the two Colossi of Memnon. Then your cruise ends and a private vehicle takes you across the desert to the Red Sea.
This is a long day, with sightseeing and a long drive together, so keep snacks and water handy. You reach your Marsa Alam hotel in the evening for the first of five nights.
- 8
Today is a gentle start to the coast. A shared boat collects you from your hotel for about five hours at Marsa Mubarak, a sheltered bay where green turtles often graze on the seagrass. A mask, snorkel and fins are provided, plus tea, coffee and bottled water. Turtles are wild animals, so we cannot guarantee a sighting, although they are seen often here. The afternoon is free at the hotel.
- 9
A shared air-conditioned vehicle takes you to the harbor, and from there a shared boat heads out to Samadai, a horseshoe reef known as the Dolphin House. The trip lasts about eight hours. You snorkel in the reef lagoon, where spinner dolphins often rest during the day. The marine park fee is included, with a life jacket, mask, snorkel and fins, and lunch on the boat.
Dolphins are wild, so a sighting is likely but never promised.
- 10
Nine hours away from the hotel, mostly outdoors. A shared vehicle takes you into Wadi El Gemal National Park, where mountains, mangroves and open coast meet, and brings you to Sharm El Luli beach. You swim and snorkel in clear shallow water, with a guide at your side. Lunch is served on the beach.
The national park fee, mask, snorkel, fins and bottled water are all included, and you are back at your hotel in the evening.
- 11
Your morning is free to swim or rest. At the end of the day a shared vehicle collects you for about five hours in the desert beyond Marsa Alam. You ride a camel, then sit down to a Bedouin dinner with tea and water, and look up at stars that the coast lights never reach. Evenings turn cool once the sun is down, so bring a warm layer.
This is a short camel ride and a dinner outing, with no overnight stay in the desert.
- 12
You check out of your hotel and a transfer takes you to Marsa Alam Airport for the one-hour domestic flight to Cairo, with 23 kg of luggage included. The tour ends when you land in Cairo. The flight time follows the airline schedule, which we confirm before you travel, so plan any onward international flight with that in mind and read the note on connections in the FAQ below.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
At Dahshur, climb into the Red Pyramid early; the passage is steep and low, and it is cooler and emptier before the tour groups arrive.
- 02
At Marsa Mubarak, slide into the water quietly and keep your distance from the sea turtles; calm swimmers get the longest sightings.
- 03
Take a fleece for the desert stargazing evening; temperatures drop sharply after sunset, even after a hot day on the coast.
- 04
For Samadai, keep your fins moving gently near the dolphins and never chase them; the reef there is protected and rules are enforced.

Accessibility
Who can join this
The Cairo and Nile days involve a lot of walking on large archaeological sites, with uneven stone, sand, steps and narrow tomb passages, and little shade at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. Boarding the ship and the boats at Philae and Marsa Alam means steps and gangways. Getting in and out of the water from a boat takes some agility. The vehicles are air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us your needs when you book and we will tell you honestly which parts suit you.

How we travel here
This tour uses domestic flights, a Nile cruise ship, boats and road transfers, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Sightseeing is guided by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and Marsa Alam, so much of what you spend stays in those places. The Marsa Alam trips run inside marine and national parks, and the park fees are included. Please do not touch or stand on coral or turtles, use reef-safe sun protection, and carry a refillable water bottle.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the domestic flights included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Aswan on day 4 and from Marsa Alam to Cairo on day 12 are booked for you, with 23 kg of luggage and taxes. International flights are not included.02How long is the drive from Luxor to Marsa Alam?
It is a long road day, and it follows a morning of sightseeing on Luxor's West Bank. Your vehicle is private and air-conditioned and sized to your group. Bring water and a snack, and expect to reach the hotel in the evening.03Will I make my international flight home?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed or cancelled domestic flight on day 12 could cost you your connection. This tour ends in Cairo on arrival from Marsa Alam, with no spare night built in. We would prefer you to spend one more night in Cairo before flying home. If you must connect the same day, choose a late-evening or night international flight, and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.04Will we see dolphins and turtles?
Often, but never for certain. They are wild animals. Samadai is known for resting dolphins and Marsa Mubarak for turtles, and our guides choose the spot on the day. If you do not see them, you still snorkel over healthy reef.05Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No, but you need to be comfortable in a life jacket with a mask and snorkel. Life jackets are provided on the Samadai trip. Tell us your ability when you book and we will advise on each day.06Which cruise ship and hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the ship and hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are the same at every standard.07Is Abu Simbel included?
No. This tour does not visit Abu Simbel. Ask us if you would like to add it on a longer itinerary.08Is this tour private?
The Cairo days with Giza, Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur are private, with your own Egyptologist and driver. The cruise sightseeing is guided by an Egyptologist, and you share the ship with other guests. The Marsa Alam boat trips and the desert evening use shared vehicles and shared boats.09What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides, drivers and ship staff, drinks other than those stated, meals not listed in the itinerary, the Khufu pyramid interior and premium tombs such as Tutankhamun's.
