The short answer

12-Day Egypt Tour: Cairo, Nile, Abu Simbel & El Gouna is a 12-day, 11-night trip to Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel: 3 nights in Cairo, 3 on a Nile cruise and 5 in El Gouna. Starts on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays or Sundays. It includes domestic flights, an Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transfers. Prices start at $3,099 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).

02Overview

A first look

This tour does the big sights first and the beach last. Cairo takes three nights: a camel ride at the Giza Pyramids on your arrival evening, a full day with the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, and a third morning for the museum's other half and Coptic Cairo. Then you fly to Aswan and join your Nile cruise ship for three nights.

The cruise covers Philae, the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor Temple, Karnak and the West Bank, and it includes a morning trip by road to the temples of Abu Simbel. When the ship docks at Luxor you drive to El Gouna, a lagoon resort town on the Red Sea about 15 miles north of Hurghada, and spend five nights there with two boat days, a free day and a semi-submarine trip. You pick the standard of hotel and ship when you book. The sightseeing is the same at every standard.

Field notes

From our Egyptologists

  1. 01

Book the sunset camel ride on your first evening at Giza; the dunes and pyramids glow warm, and the ride is calm after a long flight.

  2. 02

Visit the Hanging Church in Coptic Cairo near opening, when the carved screens and icons are easiest to see without lines.

  3. 03

Abu Simbel is reached from your moored cruise ship, so pack a light bag with water, sunscreen and a hat for the morning visit.

  4. 04

After the Valley of the Kings, enjoy the road to El Gouna as a rest, and keep your swimsuit near the top of your bag.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • First-time visitors who want Egypt's headline sights and then a week-end of sea and snorkeling. Suited to couples, friends and families with older children who are comfortable with a flight, early starts and some long road time.

Maybe not, if

  • Travelers who need step-free access to every site, or who dislike long road days. Day 7 combines the West Bank with a drive of about 5 to 6 hours.

Honest assessment

Real trade-offs from our experience managing this tour.

Highlights

  • Pyramids, the Nile temples and Abu Simbel, then five nights of rest by the sea
  • Abu Simbel is built into the cruise, so no separate trip to organize
  • Three boat and reef experiences at El Gouna in the last week

Things to Consider

  • Early start for Abu Simbel and a 5 to 6 hour drive on day 7 after sightseeing
  • Uneven stone, steps and little shade at the major sites
  • Dolphin sightings at Dolphin House are likely but never guaranteed

Where it fits

A good fit for a first long trip to Egypt that ends on the coast. The drive from Luxor to El Gouna is long, so it suits guests happy to trade a day on the road for a beach finish.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Many tours stop at the temples. This one adds a Red Sea stay at El Gouna after a Nile cruise that already includes Abu Simbel, with the Cairo to Aswan flight and every transfer booked for you. Hotel and ship standard is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

What to pack & wear

What to bring

  • Passport and any required travel documents
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
  • Swimsuit and a quick-dry towel for the Red Sea days
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Any personal medication, and motion-sickness tablets if boats affect you
  • Small day bag and a light layer for the ship, the flight and boat decks

What to wear

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for sun and heat
  • Closed shoes for temples and uneven ground, sandals for the beach
  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees at temples and churches
  • Long trousers for the camel ride
  • A light jacket for river evenings and boat decks in winter

Children & families

Children are welcome. Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate at any age. Entrance tickets are free for children under 6 and full price from 6. Hotel and cabin prices depend on the child's age and the room or cabin used, so we give you the exact figure when you tell us the age at booking. The camel ride is one camel per adult, so ask us about arrangements for younger children. Abu Simbel and the El Gouna road transfer are long days for small children, and the boat days involve life jackets and open water.

Accessibility

Who can join this

Cairo, Aswan and Luxor mean a lot of walking over uneven stone, sand and steps, and the tombs in the Valley of the Kings are narrow. Abu Simbel is a flat site but exposed to the sun. Boarding the cruise ship uses a gangway, and the Philae boat and the Orange Bay, Dolphin House and semi-submarine boats all involve stepping aboard from a pier. Snorkeling needs some swimming comfort in open water. Our vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us your needs when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.

– Responsible travel

How we travel here

The tour uses one domestic flight, a Nile cruise ship, private road transfers and several boat trips, and vehicle and boat types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. The Red Sea trips visit marine park areas: we ask guests to keep fins off the coral, never to touch or feed wildlife, and to use reef-safe sun cream. Guiding and transport are booked through local suppliers in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and the Hurghada area, so much of what you spend stays in those places.

  • Licensed Egyptologist guides

State-licensed, and people we have worked with for years

  • Fair wages on the ground

Drivers + guides paid above market

  • Site preservation

We follow the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' site rules: marked paths, no touching reliefs

  • Local teams, real help

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01Will I make my international flight?
This tour ends at Hurghada airport, and the only domestic flight (Cairo to Aswan) is on day 4, well before you fly home, so the main risk to a connection is small. Still, domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so if you have to connect through Cairo on the same day, choose a late-evening or night flight and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.
  2. 02Is the domestic flight included?
Yes. The flight from Cairo to Aswan on day 4 is booked for you and included. Flight times are set by the airline schedule. International flights are not included.
  3. 03How does Abu Simbel work on the cruise?
On day 5 the ship stays moored at Aswan while you set out early by road for Abu Simbel. You return to the ship for lunch and then it sails. The Abu Simbel entrance fees are included.
  4. 04How long is the drive from Luxor to El Gouna?
About 5 to 6 hours by private air-conditioned car, after your West Bank sightseeing on day 7. It is a long day, so bring water and snacks. We build the sightseeing and the drive into one day so you do not lose another night.
  5. 05Where is El Gouna and how is it reached?
El Gouna is a lagoon resort town on the Red Sea, about 15 miles north of Hurghada. Airport transfers run via Hurghada airport and the boat trips pick you up in El Gouna.
  6. 06Will we definitely see dolphins at Dolphin House?
No one can promise it. Wild dolphins often gather at the reef, so sightings are likely, but they depend on the day. You snorkel with a guide either way.
  7. 07Which hotels and cruise ship will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels and the ship for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are the same at every standard.
  8. 08What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides, drivers and ship staff, drinks other than those stated, meals not listed (such as lunch on day 3 and the free day), the Mummies Room at the Egyptian Museum and travel insurance.
  9. 09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler for the temples, and the Red Sea is pleasant for snorkeling in most of that period. Summer is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, so days start early.
