02Overview

A first look

Some travelers want the south of Egypt and nothing else. This tour gives them exactly that. You land at Luxor, stay three nights, then travel by road to Aswan for three more. There is no domestic flight and no Cairo.

In Luxor you see Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. On day 4 you drive to Aswan, stopping at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way. Abu Simbel gets a day of its own. Your last full day is Philae, the High Dam and a sunset felucca ride. You choose the standard of hotel when you book, and the sightseeing stays the same.

Field notes

From our Egyptologists

  1. 01

Start at Karnak early and walk straight to the Hypostyle Hall, before tour groups fill the columns and the light turns flat.

  2. 02

Wear sturdy closed shoes on the West Bank, because the tomb floors in the Valley of the Kings are uneven and the stairs can be steep.

  3. 03

Pack a light layer for the early Abu Simbel departure; the desert road is cooler before sunrise, and the drive is a good time to nap.

  4. 04

Bring a light jacket for the sunset felucca ride in Aswan; the breeze on the water cools quickly once the sun drops.

Tailor it

Make it yours

Choose your hotel standard when you book. Ask us about extra nights in Luxor or Aswan, a hot-air balloon flight over Luxor, or adding Cairo or a Nile cruise to the trip.

All requests handled by your dedicated specialist before booking.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • Travelers who want the south of Egypt in depth, or who have seen Cairo already. Suited to couples, friends and solo travelers who are comfortable with long road days and plenty of walking on temple sites.

Maybe not, if

  • Travelers who need step-free access to every site, or who dislike long road days. Days 4, 5 and 7 are mostly in a vehicle.

Honest assessment

Real trade-offs from our experience managing this tour.

Highlights

  • Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Abu Simbel, Philae and Aswan in one week, with no domestic flight
  • Abu Simbel has a day of its own, so nothing is squeezed around it
  • You start and finish at the same airport, with no Cairo connection

Things to Consider

  • Days 4, 5 and 7 are long road days
  • Uneven stone, steps and little shade at the major sites
  • No Cairo, pyramids or Nile cruise in this itinerary

Where it fits

A good fit for a second trip to Egypt, or a first one focused on temples. It has no Cairo, pyramids or Nile cruise, so add them if they are on your list.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Many Egypt itineraries run from Cairo and cut Luxor and Aswan short. This tour stays in the south for the whole week, with no domestic flight and Abu Simbel on its own day. Hotel standard is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

Children & families

Children are welcome. Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so we price transport and guiding per seat at any age. Entrance tickets are free for children under 6 and full price from 6. Hotel prices depend on the child's age and the room used, so we give you the exact figure when you tell us the age at booking. Be honest with yourself about the road days: the Luxor to Aswan journey and the Abu Simbel day are long for young children.

Accessibility

Who can join this

This tour involves a lot of walking on large archaeological sites, with uneven stone, sand, steps and some narrow tomb passages. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Abu Simbel have long outdoor stretches with little shade. Reaching Philae means a short boat transfer, and boarding the felucca means a step down onto the deck. The vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us your needs when you book and we will tell you honestly which parts are suitable.

– Responsible travel

How we travel here

This tour uses no domestic flights. The travel between Luxor and Aswan, and to Abu Simbel, is by road in a private vehicle, and vehicle types vary, so we do not claim a carbon saving. Sightseeing is guided by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Luxor and Aswan, and the Nile ride is on a traditional sailing boat, so much of what you spend stays in the places you visit. We ask guests to carry a refillable water bottle and not to touch painted walls in tombs and temples.

  • Licensed Egyptologist guides

State-licensed, and people we have worked with for years

  • Fair wages on the ground

Drivers + guides paid above market

  • Site preservation

We follow the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' site rules: marked paths, no touching reliefs

  • Local teams, real help

Our own offices in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm El Sheikh

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01Are there any flights on this tour?
No. You arrive at Luxor and leave from Luxor, and you travel between Luxor and Aswan by road. International flights are not included.
  2. 02Will I make my international flight?
Day 7 is a long drive from Aswan to Luxor, then the airport. Delays on the road or at the airport can happen, and your international ticket is a separate booking from this tour. Choose a flight from Luxor that leaves late in the afternoon or in the evening. If you want more margin, add a night in Luxor. Take travel insurance that covers missed connections.
  3. 03How long is the drive from Luxor to Aswan?
Day 4 is a full travel day. The temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo are on the way, so you see two sites as you go. You travel with an Egyptologist in an air-conditioned vehicle and check in to your Aswan hotel at the end.
  4. 04Is Abu Simbel included?
Yes. Abu Simbel is its own day, day 5, by road from Aswan. It is a long day with an early start, and the entrance fees are included.
  5. 05Is this tour tiring?
It can be. Days 4, 5 and 7 are long road days, and days 2, 3 and 6 mean a lot of walking on uneven stone with little shade. Most guests who enjoy temples find it rewarding. If you want a gentler pace, ask us about adding a free day.
  6. 06Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are the same at every standard.
  7. 07What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, lunches and dinners, drinks and tombs other than the three in the Valley of the Kings.
  8. 08Is this tour private?
Yes. Your Egyptologist and driver are private to your group on the sightseeing days, and the Luxor and Aswan transfers are private cars.
  9. 09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for walking around temples. Summers are very hot in Luxor and Aswan, so days start early.
