02Overview
A first look
This ten-day tour does the history first and the beach last. You spend two nights in Cairo for the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum, plus a half day in Islamic Cairo. Then you ride the sleeper train south to Luxor. You have a private cabin, dinner and breakfast on board, and you wake up a short drive from the temples.
Two nights in Luxor cover the Valley of the Kings and Karnak with an Egyptologist. After that, a private car takes you across to the Red Sea. You spend four nights in Hurghada with three boat days: dolphin snorkeling, an island beach day and a semi-submarine over the reef. Two of the nine nights are on the train, and the rest are in hotels. You pick the hotel standard when you book.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
10 Days / 9 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Grand Egyptian Museum · Citadel of Saladin · Luxor · Valley of the Kings
- 1
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and takes you to your hotel, about an hour away. Rest after your flight. In the evening you are collected for a Nile dinner cruise: about three hours in total, with a buffet dinner, live entertainment and top-deck views of the city lights. A private transfer brings you back to your hotel.
- 2
Your Egyptologist guide collects you from your hotel for a full day. Expect about 4 to 6 hours on the Giza Plateau and in the museum, plus the drives. You start at the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, stop for lunch with a view, then spend the afternoon in the Grand Egyptian Museum.
The guide, entrance fees to the Giza Plateau outdoor sites and the museum, and an air-conditioned vehicle are included, with bottled water on the way. You return to your hotel for a second night in Cairo.
- 3
The morning is free. In the afternoon your Egyptologist collects you for a half day in old Cairo: the Citadel of Saladin and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, a walk through Islamic Cairo and time in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. The guide, the entrance fees for the Citadel and mosque, and the vehicle are included.
A private transfer then takes you to Giza station, about 45 minutes away, where you board the overnight sleeper train to Luxor. Your private cabin is yours for the night. Dinner and breakfast are served on board, and the journey takes about 12 hours.
- 4
You arrive in Luxor after your night on the train and are taken from the station to your hotel. Your Egyptologist then takes you across to the West Bank for a full sightseeing day. You visit the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon and Medinet Habu. The guide, the entrance fees and the transport are included.
Sightseeing is arranged around your train arrival, so tell us if you want a rest at the hotel first.
- 5
Today is the East Bank with your Egyptologist. You walk through Karnak, the largest temple complex in Egypt, with its forest of columns, and then visit Luxor Temple beside the river. Hotel pickup, the guide, the entrance fees to both temples, the vehicle between sites and bottled water are included. The afternoon is free, and you spend a second night in Luxor.
- 6
After breakfast a private air-conditioned car takes you from Luxor to the Red Sea coast. The drive is about five hours, and your driver will stop on the way if you ask. You check in at your hotel in Hurghada and the rest of the day is yours. Four nights here give you a slower pace after the temples.
- 7
Today is a boat trip from Hurghada to the Dolphin House reef, with time to snorkel in the Red Sea. The dolphins are wild, so we cannot promise a sighting. Bring your swimsuit, a towel and reef-safe sunscreen. The rest of the day is free.
- 8
A boat takes you to Paradise Island for a day on the beach. You can swim and snorkel, and lunch is included. It is the most relaxed day of the tour, so pack a good book, a hat and plenty of sunscreen. You return to your hotel in the afternoon.
- 9
Your last full day is a trip of about three hours to see the reef without getting wet if you prefer. You are collected from your hotel and go out on a semi-submarine, a two-hour trip shared with other guests, with a glass-bottom boat and a swim stop. Mask and snorkel are provided, with a soft drink and water on board. The rest of the day is free for the pool or last-minute shopping.
- 10
After breakfast a driver takes you from your hotel to Hurghada Airport for the domestic flight to Cairo, which is included. Flight times follow the airline schedule. From Cairo you connect with your flight home, so we advise an evening or night international departure. See the question about making your international flight below.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Pack a small overnight bag for the sleeper train and keep it with you; your main luggage can stay with the transfer vehicle.
- 02
Cairo's Citadel is best before the train night; its terrace viewpoint gives you a skyline of minarets to carry with you.
- 03
Book the evening Nile dinner cruise as your jet-lag recovery: a seated, relaxed first night, with the show starting after you have eaten.
- 04
After Luxor, the Hurghada transfer crosses the Eastern Desert, so bring water and a charged phone for the road views.

Things to Consider
- The tour ends with a domestic flight and no spare night in Cairo
- Cabins on the sleeper train are compact

Where it fits
A good fit for a first trip that mixes history with beach time. If you want a spare night in Cairo before flying home, ask us to add it.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Most Egypt itineraries end with a Nile cruise or a final Cairo night. This one ends on the Red Sea, and the sleeper train replaces a flight and a hotel night between Cairo and Luxor. Hotel standard is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

Children & families
Children are welcome. Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate at any age. Entrance tickets are free for children under 6 and full price from 6. Hotel and train cabin arrangements depend on the child's age and how many people share, so we give you the exact figure when you tell us the age at booking. The 12-hour train ride and several long sightseeing days suit older children better than toddlers, and children need to be comfortable in a life jacket for the boat days.
Accessibility
Who can join this
This tour involves a lot of walking on large archaeological sites, with uneven stone, sand and steps, and narrow passages in some tombs. The Valley of the Kings and Karnak have long outdoor stretches with little shade. Boarding the train means a step up from the platform and a narrow corridor to your cabin, and the cabins are compact. The Hurghada days use boats with steps and gangways, and getting in and out of the water involves a ladder. The vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site, on the train or on the boats. Tell us your needs when you book and we will tell you honestly which parts are suitable.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The tour uses a sleeper train, private road transfers, one domestic flight and day boats, and vehicle types vary, so we do not claim a carbon saving. Sightseeing is guided by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada, so most of the money you spend stays in the places you visit. On the reef, please do not stand on or touch the coral. Bring a refillable water bottle and a reef-safe sunscreen, and do not touch painted walls in tombs.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Where do we sleep on this tour?
Two of the nine nights are on the sleeper train, in a private cabin: Cairo to Luxor on day 3. The other seven are in hotels: two in Cairo, two in Luxor and four in Hurghada. We name the hotels for your dates once you choose a standard.02Will I make my international flight?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed domestic flight can cost you the connection. This tour ends with the flight from Hurghada to Cairo on day 10, with no spare night in Cairo. We prefer one last night in Cairo, and we will quote it if you ask. If you connect the same day, choose a late-evening or night international flight, and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.03What is the sleeper train like?
You have a private cabin for the night, with dinner and breakfast on board. The journey from Cairo to Luxor takes about 12 hours. Cabins are compact, so pack a small overnight bag and keep your large case with the driver.04Are the guide, entrance fees and transport included?
Yes, on the sightseeing days in Cairo and Luxor. An English-speaking Egyptologist, entrance fees to the listed sites and air-conditioned transport are included. Premium tombs and the inside of the Khufu pyramid cost extra.05Is the flight included?
The domestic flight from Hurghada to Cairo on day 10 is booked for you and included. The train links Cairo and Luxor, and a private car links Luxor and Hurghada. International flights are not included.06Can I snorkel if I am not a strong swimmer?
Yes. Mask and snorkel are provided on the semi-submarine trip, and the semi-submarine lets you see the reef from inside the boat. Tell your crew about your swimming level, and wear a life jacket if you are unsure.07What meals are included?
Breakfast is included on every hotel morning, dinner on day 1 at the Nile dinner cruise, lunch on days 2 and 8, and dinner and breakfast on the sleeper train. Other meals are at your own cost.08Is the sightseeing private?
Your Egyptologist and driver are private on the Cairo and Luxor days. The Hurghada boat trips, including the semi-submarine, are shared with other guests.09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and best for the temples. Summers are very hot in Luxor, so sightseeing starts early, but the Red Sea stays pleasant for swimming for most of the year.
