02Overview

A first look

This is the Egypt tour for people who want history first and a beach after it. You spend two nights in Cairo, with a Nile dinner cruise on arrival and a full day at the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Then you fly to Luxor for two nights. One day is Karnak and Luxor Temple, the next is the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon.

Day 5 is a flight day: Luxor to Cairo, then Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh, with no sightseeing. The last five nights are by the Red Sea. You snorkel at Ras Mohammed National Park, view the reef from a semi-submarine, spend a day on a boat at Tiran Island and see Sharm's Old Market and mosque. Every excursion starts from your hotel.

Field notes

From our Egyptologists

  1. 01

Book the Nile dinner cruise for your first night; it is an easy, seated way to shake off the flight.

  2. 02

At Karnak, look for the obelisk of Hatshepsut and ask your guide how it was raised, then finish at Luxor Temple after dusk for the lights.

  3. 03

Leave the Valley of the Kings early on the West Bank day, as the tomb corridors get stuffy once the crowds arrive.

  4. 04

The semi-submarine in Sharm is a calm way to see the reef, so it suits anyone who prefers to stay dry.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • First-time visitors who want Egypt's best-known sights and then time at the Red Sea. Suited to couples, friends and solo travelers who are comfortable with three flights and with snorkeling from a boat.

Maybe not, if

  • Travelers who need step-free access to every site, or who want a slow pace in one place. Days 2 and 5 are long.

Honest assessment

Real trade-offs from our experience managing this tour.

Highlights

  • Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Luxor's temples, then five nights by the sea
  • All three domestic flights and every transfer handled for you
  • Four Sharm excursions start at your hotel, with park and marine fees included

Things to Consider

  • Day 5 is a travel day with two flights and no sightseeing
  • Uneven stone, steps and little shade at the Cairo and Luxor sites
  • No Mount Sinai and no multi-night Nile cruise

Where it fits

A good first trip to Egypt that ends on the beach. It has no Nile cruise and no Mount Sinai, so choose another tour if either is on your list.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Many operators sell Cairo, Luxor and Sharm as separate trips. This tour joins them in ten days, with every flight, transfer and excursion booked for you. Hotel standard is your choice; the itinerary does not change.

Children & families

Children are welcome. Entrance fees, hotel rates and excursion prices depend on the child's age, and snorkeling trips depend on how confident the child is in the water. Tell us the age of each child when you book and we will confirm the exact arrangements and cost for every day. Strollers are hard to use on stone and steps at the temples.

Accessibility

Who can join this

The Cairo and Luxor days involve a lot of walking on large archaeological sites, with uneven stone, steps and sand, and little shade at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. The Valley of the Kings tombs have steep, narrow passages. In Sharm El Sheikh you board boats and a semi-submarine by gangway or steps, and the Ras Mohammed and Tiran trips involve getting into and out of the water. Transport is by air-conditioned vehicle, and the Sharm excursions use shared minibuses and boats. We cannot promise wheelchair access at every site or on every boat. Tell us your needs when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.

– Responsible travel

How we travel here

This tour uses three domestic flights, road transfers and boats, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Ras Mohammed and the Tiran Island reefs are protected, and park and marine fees are included in the price. We ask guests not to touch or stand on coral, to use reef-safe sun protection and to take a refillable water bottle. Sightseeing is led by local guides and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo, Luxor and Sharm El Sheikh, so much of what you spend stays in those places.

  • Licensed Egyptologist guides

State-licensed, and people we have worked with for years

  • Fair wages on the ground

Drivers + guides paid above market

  • Site preservation

We follow the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' site rules: marked paths, no touching reliefs

  • Local teams, real help

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01Are the domestic flights included?
Yes. Three flights are booked for you: Cairo to Luxor on day 3, then Luxor to Cairo and Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh on day 5. Each includes 23 kg of luggage and taxes. Flight times are set by the airlines. International flights are not included.
  2. 02How many nights do we spend in each place?
Two nights in Cairo, two in Luxor and five in Sharm El Sheikh, nine hotel nights in all, with breakfast each morning after the first day.
  3. 03Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels for your dates. The itinerary and the excursions are the same at every standard.
  4. 04Will I make my international flight?
This tour ends in Sharm El Sheikh, and the domestic flights are on day 5, five nights before you leave, so they do not sit between you and your flight home. Your last day is a hotel-to-airport transfer. Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so if you fly home from Cairo instead, add a night in Cairo or pick a late-evening or night flight. Take travel insurance that covers missed connections.
  5. 05How hard is day 5?
It is a travel day: Luxor to Cairo by air, then Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh by air, plus the transfers. There is no sightseeing, so expect a lot of waiting at airports. Keep your carry-on light.
  6. 06Do I need to be a strong swimmer for the snorkeling?
Ras Mohammed and Tiran Island both include snorkeling with mask and snorkel provided, and Tiran also includes fins. Comfort in the water helps. The semi-submarine and glass-bottom boat on day 7 let you see the reef without getting wet.
  7. 07Is there an Egyptologist on every day?
A licensed Egyptologist guides the Giza and Museum day in Cairo and both Luxor days. On the Sharm days an English-speaking or snorkeling guide goes with each trip, and the Sharm excursions are shared with other guests.
  8. 08Will you pick me up from my hotel in Sharm El Sheikh?
Yes, for hotels in Naama Bay, Sharks Bay, Nabq, Hadaba and the Old Market area. Pickup and drop-off are at your hotel for each excursion. If your hotel is somewhere else, tell us when you book.
  9. 09What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks and meals other than those stated, optional extras, and travel insurance.
