The short answer
6-Day Family Egypt Tour: Cairo & Luxor is a 6-day, 5-night trip to Cairo and Luxor: 3 nights in Cairo and 2 in Luxor. It includes domestic flights, an Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transfers. Prices start at $1,432 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
Egypt works well with children when the days have something to do in them. This tour mixes the big sights with moments kids remember: a camel at the foot of the Pyramids, a felucca ride at sunset, the mummies at the Egyptian Museum and a private motorboat to Banana Island.
You spend three nights in Cairo and two in Luxor, with a domestic flight in between. An English-speaking Egyptologist guides the sightseeing days, and entrance fees and transport are included. Days are paced around family travel: half days in Cairo, one long day on Luxor's West Bank and a busy last morning. You choose the standard of hotel when you book.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
6 Days / 5 Nights · Cairo · Nile · Giza Plateau · Great Sphinx · Egyptian Museum · Luxor
- 1
A private representative meets you at Cairo Airport and drives you to your hotel, about an hour away. Rest after the flight. Later in the day you go out for a sunset ride on a felucca, the traditional sailing boat of the Nile, as the city lights come on along the river. Your arrival time sets the timing for the evening, so the ride is arranged around your flight.
- 2
A half-day tour of the Giza Plateau with your English-speaking Egyptologist guide. You see the pyramids and the Great Sphinx, and your guide tells the stories in a way children can follow. Then comes the camel ride: about 20 minutes, one camel per person, with a handler, and your guide helps with mounting and photos. Entrance fees and transport are included.
The rest of the day is free at your hotel.
- 3
A half-day visit to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square with your Egyptologist guide. You walk past statues, coffins and ancient treasures, and your ticket includes the Mummies Room, where preserved pharaohs lie. It can be frightening for very young children, so decide as a family on the spot. Entrance fees and transport are included. The afternoon is free, and you spend a third night in Cairo.
- 4
After breakfast a private transfer takes you from your Cairo hotel to the airport for the domestic flight to Luxor, where another transfer takes you to your hotel. The flight time is set by the airline schedule. Late in the day a private motorboat with a boatman takes you out on the Nile for about three hours at sunset, to Banana Island.
The island entry fee is included, with fresh fruit, mint tea and bottled water.
- 5
This is the longest sightseeing day: about 6 hours of touring with your Egyptologist guide, with plenty of heat on the West Bank, so start early. You visit the Valley of the Kings, where entry to three tombs is included, then Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. Air-conditioned transport takes you from the hotel and back.
Bring water and hats, and let children set the pace between the stops.
- 6
A busy last morning. After breakfast you check out and visit the East Bank with your guide: Karnak, the largest temple complex in Egypt, then Luxor Temple. Entrance fees and transport are included. A transfer takes you to Luxor Airport for the domestic flight to Cairo. There is no hotel night in this plan, as the flight is meant to connect with your flight home.
Choose a late-evening or night departure.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Bring a hat and water for the Giza camel ride; the plateau has little shade, and kids tire fast in the midday glare.
- 02
Tell children about the mummies before you enter the Mummies Room at the Egyptian Museum, so the visit feels exciting rather than scary.
- 03
Let kids pick one tomb in the Valley of the Kings to study closely; the colorful ceilings hold their attention best.
- 04
Take a light jacket for the sunset boat rides in Cairo and Luxor, as the breeze off the Nile cools quickly.

Children & families
Children are welcome. Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate at any age. Entrance tickets are usually free for children under 6 and full price from 6. Hotel prices depend on the child's age and the room used, so we give you the exact figure when you tell us the ages at booking. The camel ride is one camel per person with a handler, and your guide helps with mounting. The Mummies Room can frighten very young children, so we suggest you decide on the day whether yours would enjoy it.
Accessibility
Who can join this
This tour involves a lot of walking on uneven stone, sand and steps. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak and the Giza Plateau have long open stretches with little shade, and some tomb passages are narrow and steep. The felucca and the motorboat are boarded from the riverbank, so you step down onto the boat. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us your needs and your children's ages when you book and we will tell you honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The tour uses one domestic flight and private road transfers, and the vehicle type can vary, so we do not claim a carbon saving. The felucca is a sailing boat. Sightseeing is guided by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo and Luxor, so most of what you spend stays in the places you visit. Please bring a refillable water bottle, and ask children not to touch the painted walls in tombs. Camel rides are handled by local handlers; tell your guide if an animal looks unwell.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Is this tour a good fit for children?
Yes, for most school-age children. The camel ride, the felucca and the motorboat are easy wins, and the Egyptian Museum has mummies. The day 5 West Bank touring is the hardest day, with heat and about 6 hours of sightseeing. Tell us the ages when you book.02What do children pay?
Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are the adult rate at any age. Entrance tickets are usually free for children under 6. Hotel prices depend on age and room, and we confirm the exact figure when you give us the ages.03Is the Mummies Room suitable for young children?
It can be frightening for very young children, because real preserved bodies lie in the room. The ticket is included, but you choose on the day whether to go in. Many older children find it the highlight of the museum.04How long is the camel ride?
About 20 minutes on the Giza Plateau, with one camel per person and a handler. Your guide helps with mounting and takes photos. Tell us if anyone in your group does not want to ride.05Is the domestic flight included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Luxor on day 4 and from Luxor to Cairo on day 6 are booked for you and included, with 23 kg of luggage each. International flights are not.06Will I make my international flight?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed domestic flight can cost you the connection. We prefer a final night in Cairo, but this tour ends with the Luxor to Cairo flight on day 6. If you connect the same day, choose a late-evening or night international flight, and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.07Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are the same at every standard. You have three nights in Cairo and two in Luxor, with breakfast.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, meals other than those stated, drinks other than the water and mint tea on the Banana Island trip, extra tombs and travel insurance.09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for children at the sites. Summers are very hot in Luxor, so we start the day early and plan breaks.
