02Overview
A first look
This is the long way round Egypt, done in a sensible order. You spend four nights in Cairo first, so the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, a day trip to Fayoum and the old mosques and churches of Islamic and Coptic Cairo are not squeezed into one rushed day. Then you head to Alexandria for two nights on the Mediterranean and come back to Cairo for the Egyptian Museum.
A flight takes you south to Luxor, where you join a Nile cruise ship for four nights to Aswan, with Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae on the way. After two hotel nights in Aswan, with Abu Simbel on its own day, you travel by road to Hurghada and finish with four relaxed nights by the Red Sea, including a day of snorkeling at Orange Bay. You choose the standard of hotel and ship when you book. The sightseeing stays the same.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
18 Days / 17 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Fayoum · Islamic Cairo · Alexandria · Luxor
- 1
A representative is waiting in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and walks you to a private car for the hour-long drive to your hotel. Nothing else is planned, so the evening is yours to unpack and sleep off the journey before four busy days start.
- 2
Your Egyptologist collects you at the hotel for a full day, with the entrance fees, the vehicle and bottled water included. First comes the Giza Plateau: the three great pyramids and the Great Sphinx. Lunch is served at a restaurant with a view. The afternoon belongs to the Grand Egyptian Museum, home of the Tutankhamun collection, before you ride back to the hotel.
- 3
Today you leave the capital behind for the Fayoum region and Wadi El Rayan. A private car and driver pick you up at the hotel, and an English-speaking guide goes with you. It is a full day, about 10 hours with the drives, and lunch is at a local restaurant. You come back to the same Cairo hotel in the evening.
- 4
A calmer six hours with your private Egyptologist. You see the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques, then climb to Saladin's Citadel and the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali. After that you cross to Old Coptic Cairo for the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, with a lunch break in Old Cairo. Entrance fees to the mosques and the Citadel are included.
- 5
You leave Cairo for Alexandria on the coast, on a two-night package that includes Wadi Natrun along the route. Breakfast and lunch are part of the package. By evening you are settled in a hotel in Alexandria, and the main city sightseeing is saved for tomorrow.
- 6
This is the big Alexandria day. You visit the 15th-century Qaitbay Citadel on the harbor, Pompey's Pillar and the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, where Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles mix. The last stop is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern library near the site of the ancient one. Expect a full day on your feet that suits good walkers. You sleep a second night in Alexandria.
- 7
After breakfast you visit the Graeco-Roman Museum, then return to Cairo by road. Later in the day your private Egyptologist takes you through the Egyptian Museum on a 4-hour visit with skip-the-line entry: Old and Middle Kingdom masterpieces, royal linens, papyri and animal mummies, with a coffee or tea break. The Mummies Room is not included in the ticket.
It is a full day, so the museum is arranged around your arrival back in Cairo.
- 8
A private car takes you from the hotel to Cairo Airport for the flight to Luxor, which is booked for you and set by the airline schedule. In Luxor you are met and driven into town. Your Egyptologist shows you Karnak, including the Sacred Lake, and Luxor Temple, with the sightseeing arranged around the flight. This is your first night aboard the ship, on full board.
- 9
The West Bank is today's work. You look up at the Colossi of Memnon, enter three tombs in the Valley of the Kings on your ticket, and finish at Hatshepsut's terraced mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. Your Egyptologist, the entrance fees and the transport are covered by the cruise sightseeing package. Meals are on board.
- 10
You spend the day moving upriver, stopping ashore at two temples. Edfu, the Temple of Horus, is among the best preserved in Egypt. Kom Ombo is the double temple that stands right by the water. In between, the deck is the place to be, with the farmland and palms of the Nile Valley sliding past.
- 11
In Aswan you visit Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, the giant slab still lying in its granite quarry. Your guide, entrance tickets and transport are covered. Philae is reached by boat. The ship is your home for one more night.
- 12
After breakfast on board you check out of the ship and move to your Aswan hotel. The cruise sightseeing is finished, and no tours are planned for the rest of the day. Spend it by the river at your own pace. Tomorrow is a long one.
- 13
A full day for one site: the temples of Ramesses II and Queen Nefertari at Abu Simbel, reached by road from Aswan. The entrance fees to the temples are included. Wear a hat, since there is little shade. Back at your Aswan hotel, you have a second night there.
- 14
This is a travel day. A private vehicle collects you from your Aswan hotel and drives you to Hurghada on the Red Sea, a transfer of about 7 hours. Luggage is carried for you. There is no sightseeing, so arrive, check in and spend the evening settling in.
- 15
Nothing is booked today. After sixteen days of travel, use the time to swim, read or walk along the seafront. If you want to add an activity, ask us and we will arrange it.
- 16
You are picked up at the hotel and taken to the harbor, then cross by motorboat to Orange Bay on Giftun Island. There are two guided snorkeling sessions, with equipment and life jackets provided, and a sunbed on the beach in between. A hot lunch and bottled water are included, and the boat brings you back to Hurghada.
- 17
Your last full day is open. Do as much or as little as you like, and pack in the evening, since the airport transfer comes tomorrow. If you want a dinner booked or a short activity added, let us know in advance.
- 18
After breakfast you check out and a driver takes you to Hurghada Airport, about an hour away. This is a transfer only. International flights are not part of the tour, so book yours with enough time to reach the airport comfortably.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Use the two Hurghada leisure days to rest; after sixteen days of sightseeing, an unscheduled morning by the sea is welcome.
- 02
Leave laundry for the Alexandria stop and keep one carry bag for the Fayoum day, where facilities are basic.
- 03
Start the Abu Simbel road trip very early; the temple is at its best soon after arrival.
- 04
For the Fayoum and Wadi El Rayan day, bring a sun hat and plenty of water for the dry lake shores.

Hotel and cabin prices depend on the child's age and the room or cabin used, so we give you the exact figure when you tell us the age at booking. Accessibility
Who can join this
This tour involves a lot of walking on large archaeological sites, with uneven stone, sand, steps and narrow tomb passages, and long drives on Days 3, 13 and 14. Boarding the cruise ship, the boat crossing to Orange Bay and the climb to the Citadel in Cairo all involve steps or a gangway. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us your needs when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The tour uses one domestic flight, a Nile cruise ship, a motorboat at Orange Bay and long private road transfers, and the vehicle type can vary, so we do not claim a carbon saving. Sightseeing is guided by local Egyptologists and arranged through suppliers in Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and Hurghada, so much of what you spend stays in the places you visit. We ask guests to bring a refillable water bottle, not to touch painted walls in tombs and not to stand on or touch the coral when snorkeling.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Which flights are included?
One domestic flight is included: Cairo to Luxor on Day 8. It is booked for you, and the airline sets the time. International flights are not included, and you fly home from Hurghada on Day 18.02How many nights are on the Nile cruise?
Four nights on board, from Luxor to Aswan, on full board. The other 13 nights are in hotels: four in Cairo, two in Alexandria, one more in Cairo, two in Aswan and four in Hurghada.03Is Abu Simbel included?
Yes. Day 13 is a full day to Abu Simbel by road from Aswan, and the temple entrance fees are included. It is a day of its own, so you do not need to fit it into the cruise.04What happens on Day 12?
You leave the ship after breakfast and move to your Aswan hotel. No sightseeing is planned on that day, so you can rest by the river after four ship days.05How long is the drive from Aswan to Hurghada?
About 7 hours by private vehicle on Day 14. It is a travel day with no sightseeing, and we carry your luggage between hotels.06What is there to do in Hurghada?
Day 16 is a snorkeling day at Orange Bay on Giftun Island, with a hot lunch. Days 15 and 17 are free. We can add other activities on request.07Will I make my international flight?
Your flight home leaves from Hurghada after a transfer only on Day 18. If you plan to fly on through Cairo, remember that domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed domestic flight can cost you the connection. We prefer one extra night in Cairo. If you must connect the same day, choose a late-evening or night international flight, and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.08Which hotels and ship will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels and the ship for your dates. The itinerary and the sightseeing are the same at every standard.09How tiring is it?
It is a long tour with several full days: Giza, Fayoum, Alexandria, Abu Simbel and the 7-hour road day to Hurghada. The free days in Hurghada at the end are there so you can rest before flying home.10What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides, drivers and ship staff, drinks and meals other than those stated, the Mummies Room at the Egyptian Museum and any extra tombs beyond the three on your Valley of the Kings ticket.
