Luxor quad biking: what to expect

A guided sunset ride through farm tracks and desert edge on the West Bank, with a briefing and tea stop.

The quad safari is the Luxor trip that has nothing to do with temples. It takes place on the West Bank, away from the main sites, on the farm tracks and desert edge near the villages. It is a fun, dusty way to spend a late afternoon.

It is also easier than it sounds. You do not need to have ridden a quad before. The team gives a briefing and a practice ride, and the guide leads the group at a steady pace.

How the trip runs

You are collected from your hotel or cruise boat around three in the afternoon and driven to the base on the West Bank. A guide explains the controls and the safety rules, and you try the quad on a short practice track. Only when you feel ready does the group set off.

The guided ride lasts about an hour and a half. It runs through sugar-cane tracks, past small farms and onto the desert edge. A tea stop gives you a view of the Theban hills in golden light, and then the group rides back as the sun sets.

Single or shared

You can ride your own quad or share one with another rider. Sharing is a good choice for children who meet the age and size rules, and for nervous riders who prefer to sit behind. Ask us about the minimum age when you book, so we can tell you the current rule for your group.

  • Pick-up from your Luxor hotel or cruise boat
  • Safety briefing and practice ride at the base
  • Guided ride of about 1.5 hours
  • Tea stop with a view of the Theban hills
  • Helmet, scarf, guide, tea and bottled water included

Dust, heat and comfort

Expect dust. The tracks are dry, and quads kick it up. A scarf and sunglasses help a lot, and you should wear clothes that you do not mind washing. Late afternoon timing keeps the heat manageable, even in summer.

Who it suits

Adventurous couples, friends and families with older children will enjoy it. It is a good contrast to a day of temples. It does not suit anyone with back problems, anyone who is pregnant, or anyone uneasy about uneven ground.

If you want a calmer evening, the horse carriage ride or the Banana Island boat trip are better choices.

What to wear and bring

Wear long trousers, closed shoes and a top that covers your shoulders. Bring sunglasses and keep your scarf handy. A small bottle of water is provided, and tea is served at the stop.

Leave jewelry and valuables at the hotel. If you carry a phone, keep it in a zipped pocket, and ask the guide before taking photos while moving.

After the ride you will probably be dusty. A hot shower and a cold drink back at the hotel are a good reward.

The ride is best enjoyed with a light heart. Follow the guide, keep a safe distance from the quad in front and stop when asked. Do that, and you will find the afternoon is both thrilling and calm.

It also gives you a different view of West Bank life: farmers at work, children waving and the temples in the distance.
