02Overview
A first look
Sataya Reef lies far south of Marsa Alam, so this is one of the longer boat days on the coast. A shared vehicle collects you at 04:30 and drives about two to two and a half hours to Hamata harbour. From there a boat runs out to the reef in about an hour and a half. Spinner dolphins often rest in the calm water inside the reef during the morning. The crew watches for them and lets guests snorkel when conditions are right. After lunch the boat moves to a second reef. You are back at your hotel between 16:00 and 18:00 depending on the drive. The dolphins are wild, and some days they are elsewhere.
Background
The facts
Sataya Reef lies in the far south of Egypt's Red Sea coast. The road to Hamata harbour takes about two hours, and the boat needs another hour and a half to reach the reef.

Detailed itinerary
- 1
The vehicle comes to your hotel at 04:30, and other guests join along the route. Dress in your swimsuit under light clothes, because there is no changing room on the dock. If you ask the evening before, the hotel can pack a small breakfast to eat on the road.
- 2
The road follows the coast through quiet desert and past a few small settlements. A rest stop breaks up the journey. Most guests doze, so bring a light layer, because the air conditioning runs cold.
- 3
At the harbour the crew shows you onto the boat and gives a safety talk. Tea and coffee are served on deck while the boat gets ready. This is the moment to take a seasickness tablet if the sea worries you.
- 4
The boat heads out to sea for about an hour and a half. The guide explains how to behave around dolphins and hands out gear. Sit near the middle of the boat if you feel the swell.
- 5
At the reef the crew scans the water for fins. When a pod is resting and the sea is calm, the guide lets swimmers slip in quietly. Nobody chases or touches the animals. If the pod is not there, you snorkel the reef itself.
- 6
A hot lunch is served on the boat while it rests at anchor. Tell the crew about any food allergy when you board. Soft drinks cost extra, while water and tea are free.
- 7
The boat moves to a nearby reef with a different mix of coral and fish. The water here is often calmer than at Sataya. Weaker swimmers can stay close to the boat ladder.
- 8
The boat returns to Hamata at about 15:30. The vehicle then drives north and drops guests at their hotels, with arrival between 16:00 and 18:00. Plan a quiet evening after a 13-hour day.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01How is this trip priced, and what does the price cover?
The price is per person for a shared group of up to 25. It covers the transfers, the boat, snorkeling gear, lunch and drinks listed above. Children under 2 travel free and ages 2 to 11 pay half. Guests of 12 and over pay the adult fare. Our team confirms the final figure when it replies to your request.02Will we really see dolphins at Sataya?
Not for certain. The spinner dolphins here are wild, and sightings are likely but never guaranteed. They often rest in the reef in the morning, but a pod can move away or stay far from the boat. We never chase, feed or touch them. If they are absent, the snorkeling on the reef is still worth the trip.03Is the day too long for children?
It is a tiring day for small children, with a 04:30 start and roughly five hours in the vehicle. Many school-age children who like the sea manage well. For younger ones, a shorter boat day such as Abu Dabbab or Marsa Mubarak is easier. Tell us their ages when you send your request.04What should I wear and bring?
Wear swimwear under light clothes, and bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. A light cover-up helps on the boat in the wind. Keep some cash for soft drinks and tips. A dry change of clothes is useful for the long ride home.05What happens if I need to cancel?
More than 72 hours ahead, keep 100% as credit toward future travel or take a 100% refund, less bank charges. Between 72 and 24 hours, keep 100% as credit or take a 50% refund. Within 24 hours, or if you don't show up, there is no refund or credit. If we have to cancel, you lose nothing.06Is this a shared trip or can I go alone with my group?
It is shared with other guests, up to 25 on the boat and in the vehicle. You travel and snorkel with the same group all day, led by one guide and the crew. Pick-up covers several hotels, so expect a few stops in the dark before sunrise.
