Take the day trip if Luxor is a single item on a beach vacation and you are happy to trade a night's sleep for it. Take the overnight trip if you can give Luxor two days. The sights are the same on both. What changes is how tired you are when you reach each one, and how much time you have at the biggest site, Karnak.
The honest difference is the clock. On the day trip our shared coach collects you at 04:30 and drives about four hours across the Eastern Desert. You reach the Valley of the Kings around 09:15, and the drive home starts around 16:00 and ends at your hotel at about 20:00. That is 15 hours, and roughly eight of them are spent sitting in a vehicle.
What the one-day trip covers
The day trip is built so the long drive happens while you sleep or doze. Once in Luxor, the program is tight but complete. Your Egyptologist guide moves the group through the West Bank first, then crosses to the East Bank after lunch, when Karnak is at its largest and most rewarding.
- 09:15 – Valley of the Kings, three tombs on the standard ticket
- 11:15 – Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari
- 12:15 – photo stop at the Colossi of Memnon
- 13:00 – lunch at a local restaurant
- 14:15 – Karnak Temple, including the Great Hypostyle Hall
- 16:00 – drive back to the coast
Karnak is the one that suffers. You get about an hour and three-quarters before the coach leaves, which is enough for the main axis and the Hypostyle Hall but not for the outer courts or the sacred lake. Luxor Temple is not on the day trip at all.
What the overnight trip adds
The overnight trip leaves at about 05:00 and drives the same four hours, but you start with Karnak at 09:30 and have the whole of the morning there. After lunch you check in at a 4-star Luxor hotel, rest through the hottest hours, and see Luxor Temple at 16:30, when the late light warms the sandstone. Dinner is at the hotel, and the evening is yours.
Day two starts with breakfast at 06:30 and a crossing to the West Bank. You are in the Valley of the Kings by 07:15, before the tour buses fill the car park, then visit the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon by 09:30. After lunch in Luxor you drive back to Hurghada, arriving between 13:00 and 17:00 depending on traffic. Meals included are two lunches, one dinner and one breakfast.
Heat, crowds and energy
Luxor is much hotter than Hurghada in summer. From June to August afternoon temperatures there regularly pass 40 degrees Celsius, and the Valley of the Kings has almost no shade. On the day trip you walk the valley at mid-morning and Karnak in the early afternoon, which are both warm hours. On the overnight trip the valley comes at 07:15, which makes a real difference in July.
In winter the picture reverses. From November to March Luxor is pleasantly warm during the day, and the day trip becomes much easier to enjoy. Crowds peak at the same time, so the early West Bank start on the overnight trip still helps by getting you inside the tombs ahead of the larger groups.
Who should pick which
- Pick the day trip if you have one spare day, travel light on sleep, and mainly want to see the Valley of the Kings and Karnak once.
- Pick the overnight trip if you are visiting in summer, travel with older parents or teenagers, or want Luxor Temple at dusk.
- Pick the overnight trip if you want a sunrise balloon flight over the West Bank, an optional extra that has to be booked ahead.
- Pick the day trip for younger children only if they sleep well in a vehicle; the overnight trip is gentler on them but costs a night.
Practical points for both trips
Both trips pick up in Hurghada, El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay, so you do not need to get to a meeting point. Entrance tickets to the Valley of the Kings (three tombs), the Temple of Hatshepsut and Karnak are included. The tombs of Tutankhamun, Seti I, Ramses V and VI need an extra ticket, and an electric cart in the valley is also extra, so carry some cash.
Because these are shared trips, children aged 2 to 11 pay half the adult price, children under 2 travel free, and anyone aged 12 or over pays the adult price. The overnight trip has a single-room supplement for solo travelers who want their own room. For current prices and dates, open the trip page.
