Cairo from Sharm El Sheikh: by flight or by bus, and is it worth it

A 15-hour private day by air or a 22-hour shared day by road, what each costs you in time, and the visa you need either way.

Cairo is a long way from Sharm El Sheikh, and the question is how you want to spend the time. If you can afford the flight, the private day by air is the better version: it is 15 hours instead of 22, you have a guide and driver to yourselves, and you sleep in your own bed. If you want the lowest-cost way to reach the pyramids, the shared coach is the one.

Neither trip is relaxing. Both start in the middle of the night, and both end with you tired. If you only have a few days in Sharm and have never seen the pyramids, many people decide the long day is worth it. If you plan to visit Egypt again, consider waiting and doing Cairo properly on another vacation.

The flight day

This is a private trip, so the pace is yours. A transfer collects you at 04:00 and takes you to Sharm El Sheikh Airport. You fly to Cairo, about an hour, and your guide and driver meet you at 07:30. The domestic flights are booked by us, economy class, and are included; flight times follow the airline schedule on your date.

Private also means flexible. If you would rather spend longer at the Sphinx and less at the museum, tell your guide in the morning. A private vehicle with a driver waits for you through the day, so there is no schedule set by a coach full of other people. The flights are the fixed points, so the guide plans backward from the evening departure.

In Cairo you visit the Giza Plateau for the Great Pyramid, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and the panorama point, then the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. Lunch at a local restaurant follows. In the afternoon you reach the Grand Egyptian Museum and its Grand Staircase and Tutankhamun galleries. You leave for the airport around 17:00, fly home about 19:30 and are driven to your hotel.

The road day

The coach day is shared with other guests, up to 40 in a group. It leaves your hotel at 00:30 and drives across Sinai and under the Suez Canal, 6 to 7 hours with a rest stop and checkpoints. You reach Giza at about 08:30, see the three pyramids and the panorama point, then the Sphinx at 10:45.

A museum visit comes next. On this trip it is either the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, as confirmed on booking. After lunch, the coach leaves Cairo around 15:30 and returns to Sharm between 21:30 and 22:30. It is a 22-hour day, and you will be sitting for most of it.

Be realistic about the coach. Seats are shared with up to 40 guests, there is one rest stop on the way, and the checkpoints add waiting. Many guests sleep from the Suez Canal onward. By the time you reach Giza you will have been awake for hours, so eat the breakfast you brought and drink water before you start walking in the sun.

How the two compare

  • Time: 15 hours by air, 22 hours by road.
  • Group: private for the flight day, up to 40 on the shared coach.
  • Sleep: neither gives you any; the flight day starts at 04:00 and the coach at 00:30.
  • Museum: the Grand Egyptian Museum on the flight day; either of two museums on the coach, confirmed at booking.
  • Flights: booked by us and included on the flight day; none on the coach.

Visa: the point that stops people

The free Sinai-only entry stamp is valid in the Sharm area only. It does not cover Cairo, and neither trip is possible without a full Egypt visa. If you were given the Sinai stamp at the airport and now want Cairo, you need to change your visa status. Check the current rules and fee on the official sources; the single-entry tourist visa carries a fee that depends on your passport.

Do this before you book, not on the morning. The passport check at the Sharm airport and at the road checkpoints is where the problem appears. If you are unsure which stamp you hold, ask our team before booking and we will tell you what the trip needs.

Is Cairo worth it from Sharm

It is worth it if you will not be in Egypt again and the pyramids are why you came. It is less worth it if you are tired, traveling with very young children, or traveling in peak summer heat. A good compromise is the flight day, which cuts the road time in half. For current prices, see each trip page, because the price depends on whether the trip is private or shared and how many of you there are.

If you are still unsure, look at your week. Cairo is a different Egypt from the Sharm coast: crowded, old and loud. A day there shows you the pyramids but not the city itself. Longer stays in Cairo are possible if you come back, and our team can talk through that with you. The day trip is a taste, and a good one.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Cairo with the Sinai-only stamp?
No. The free Sinai-only stamp covers the Sharm area only. Cairo and Giza need a full Egypt visa, and both the flight trip and the coach trip require it. Check your stamp before you book, and ask our team if you are unsure which one you hold.
How long is the flight from Sharm to Cairo?
The flight is about an hour. The whole private day lasts 15 hours because of the 04:00 transfer, the airport time on both ends, and a full day in Cairo. Flight times follow the airline schedule on your date, and we book the flights for you.
Is the coach day safe for children?
Think hard about it. The coach leaves at 00:30 and spends 6 to 7 hours each way on the road, a very long day for a child. Shared trips have free travel under 2 and half price for ages 2 to 11, but the flight day is usually kinder for families.
Do we go inside a pyramid?
Entry inside a pyramid is an extra ticket that is not included in either trip. You see the pyramids from the Giza Plateau and the panorama point, and the guide explains them. A camel or horse ride at Giza is also extra. Bring cash for optional tickets.
Which museum do I see on the coach trip?
It is either the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, as confirmed on booking. The flight day always visits the Grand Egyptian Museum, including the Grand Staircase and the Tutankhamun galleries. If one museum matters to you, tell us when you book.
