Aswan day trips: how to choose the right one

Temples on islands, Nubian villages, felucca sails, Abu Simbel and a flight to Cairo: what each asks of you.

Aswan is smaller and slower than Luxor, with the Nile running between granite rocks and islands. Many of its best experiences take place on the water or on the edge of the desert, and several are quiet corners that group tours skip. That variety makes choosing a day trip more interesting, and a little harder.

Below we group the options by the type of day they give you.

Gentle days on the water

The Elephantine Island and Botanical Garden tour is a private motorboat half day of about four hours. You see the ruins and the Nilometer on Elephantine, walk through Nubian villages and visit the garden on Kitchener's Island. A sunset felucca ride is shorter and quieter. The Nubian village tour adds a closer look at local life.

Temples and museums

Philae is the classic temple of Aswan, on an island near the High Dam. Kalabsha is a quieter alternative: a temple on an island in Lake Nasser, reached by boat from the High Dam, paired with the Nubian Museum. The tour takes about five hours.

Kom Ombo and Edfu form a private day by road of about nine hours. Kom Ombo is a double temple with a crocodile museum. Edfu is the best-preserved temple in Egypt.

Big days

Abu Simbel is the great Nubian monument, built by Ramses II. You can go by road, which is a long day, or by plane, which is shorter. The Cairo day trip by flight gives you the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, but runs about 16 hours.

  • Elephantine Island and Botanical Garden – about 4 hours, boat, easy
  • Kalabsha and the Nubian Museum – about 5 hours, boat and museum
  • Kom Ombo and Edfu – about 9 hours, road, temples
  • Cairo by flight – about 16 hours, very long
  • Abu Simbel – full day by road or plane

Matching the trip to your group

Older travelers and families with young children do well with the boat days. History fans should pick Kalabsha or Kom Ombo and Edfu. Anyone with a single day free and a taste for grandeur should consider Abu Simbel.

If you are on a Nile cruise, remember that your boat may already visit Philae, Kom Ombo and Edfu. Check your itinerary so you do not repeat a temple.

A simple plan

With three days, you might take a boat morning on day one, Philae or Abu Simbel on day two, and Kalabsha or a felucca on day three. Tell us what you have already seen and we will suggest a mix.

Extra things to consider

Aswan has fewer big monuments than Luxor, which means a visit feels calmer. Many travelers add an extra day simply to sit by the river, take a felucca ride or stroll the souq.

Think about transport too. Boat trips need good conditions, and road days depend on traffic. Your guide will check on the morning and tell you honestly if a change is wise.

If you are heading to Luxor or Cairo next, build in rest. A calm day by the Nile before a long journey is never wasted.

Our Aswan office can answer questions about conditions on the day, such as river level, wind and road traffic. If you have a flexible schedule, we are happy to hold a decision until the morning.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

Which Aswan trip is best for a first visit?
Philae and the High Dam are the classic half day. The Elephantine Island boat tour is a gentler introduction to the Nile.
Are the Aswan sightseeing trips private?
Our sightseeing trips are private, with your own guide and vehicle or boat.
Can I do Abu Simbel and another trip?
Abu Simbel takes most of the day, so we suggest keeping the rest of that day free.
Is the Cairo flight day worth it from Aswan?
Only if you will not otherwise see the Pyramids. It is about 16 hours long.
What is best in summer?
Boat trips in the morning and the Nubian Museum are the most comfortable. Avoid walking in the midday heat.
