Aswan: the best time to visit

One of the hottest cities in Egypt: which months are comfortable, which are punishing and how to plan around the sun.

Aswan sits close to the Tropic of Cancer, in some of the driest and sunniest country in Egypt. Heat shapes every visit. That is not a reason to stay away; it is a reason to plan with some care.

Here is how the year breaks down.

Winter: November to March

Winter is the high season, and for good reason. Days are warm and bright, often pleasant enough for shirt sleeves, and nights can be cool. Sightseeing is easy at any hour.

The trade-off is crowds, particularly at Christmas and the New Year, when hotels and cruises fill. Book early if you plan to travel then.

Spring and autumn: April and October

These months are warmer, and midday can be hot, but mornings and evenings are lovely. Early starts make sightseeing easy, and there are fewer visitors than in winter.

Summer: May to September

Summer in Aswan is very hot. Temperatures often climb far above those in most of the world's tourist cities, and the sun is relentless in the middle of the day. Many visitors still come, especially those who like quiet and low prices.

If you travel in these months, start at dawn. See temples before ten, rest in the afternoon, and do a boat trip or a village walk in the evening. A hat, light clothes and lots of water are essential.

  • November to March – warm, dry, the most comfortable
  • April and October – workable with early starts
  • May to September – very hot, plan around the sun

Rain and water levels

Rain is rare in Aswan, so you can plan with confidence. The Nile is controlled by the High Dam, and the river level stays steady through the year. That means boat trips are rarely affected by season.

Choosing your trips by season

In winter, any trip works, including Abu Simbel and the temple days. In summer, favor the Elephantine Island boat tour, a sunset felucca and the Nubian Museum. Tell us when you travel, and we will suggest the right mix.

Packing and health tips

In summer, pack light cotton clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen. A refillable water bottle is useful, and so are electrolyte tablets if you are sensitive to heat.

In winter, bring a light jacket or sweater for early mornings and evenings, particularly on the water. Days warm up quickly.

In every season, wear comfortable closed shoes for temple sites and loose clothing that covers your shoulders and knees at religious places.

If you have a medical condition that heat can worsen, check with your doctor before traveling in summer.

Remember that Aswan is also a place to slow down. Even in the hot months, an evening on the river with a light breeze is among the best things in Egypt. Plan around the sun, and the city will reward you.
