02Overview
A first look
This tour keeps you off the usual circuit. Cairo comes first, with a day at the Giza Pyramids, the Great Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The next day you leave the city for Fayoum and Wadi El Rayan, a long day out with a private guide and driver, and you sleep in Cairo again.
Then you head north. The drive to Alexandria passes through Wadi Natrun, and you spend two nights on the Mediterranean coast. The sights there are the Qaitbay Citadel, Pompey's Pillar, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Graeco-Roman Museum. A last drive takes you to Cairo Airport. You choose the standard of hotel when you book, and the route stays the same.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
6 Days / 5 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Great Sphinx · Grand Egyptian Museum · Fayoum Oasis · Wadi El Rayan
- 1
A representative waits for you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and walks you to a private vehicle. The ride to your hotel takes about an hour. After that the day is yours to rest, since no sightseeing is planned. Tomorrow starts with the pyramids, so an early night helps.
- 2
Your Egyptologist collects you from the hotel for a day of about eight hours. The morning is on the Giza Plateau, at the three great pyramids and the Great Sphinx. Lunch is next, at a restaurant with a view. In the afternoon you walk through the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to the Tutankhamun collection. Entrance fees and bottled water are included, and the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.
- 3
Today you leave Cairo for Fayoum and Wadi El Rayan. Nothing else is planned, because the trip takes about ten hours door to door. Your own English-speaking guide and driver collect you at the hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Lunch is at a local restaurant. This is a day for people who enjoy being out of the city, and you sleep in Cairo again tonight.
- 4
After breakfast you check out and set off north-west toward the Mediterranean. The road passes through Wadi Natrun, and lunch is included. Most of the day is the journey itself, so you arrive in Alexandria with time to check in and settle. The sightseeing in the city starts tomorrow.
- 5
A full day on foot in Egypt's second city. You see the Citadel of Qaitbay, a fort built on the harbour in the 15th century, and Pompey's Pillar, a tall granite column from the Roman period. The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa follow, a burial site where Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles meet. You end at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern library near the site of the ancient one.
The second Alexandria night is here.
- 6
Check out in the morning and visit the Graeco-Roman Museum, which shows how Alexandria looked under Greek and Roman rule. You then drive back to Cairo, and a private transfer takes you to Cairo Airport for your flight home. We set the museum visit and the drive around your departure time. Choose an evening or night flight, since the road back is part of this day.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum on a rested morning and let your guide lead you straight to the Tutankhamun galleries.
- 02
Pack a sun hat for Wadi El Rayan; wide open lakes mean sunlight comes from every direction.
- 03
At the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, mind the spiral stairs and keep a hand free for the rail.
- 04
Linger by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's granite wall, which carries scripts from many alphabets, before heading in.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Travelers who want Cairo's highlights plus something less common: a day in Fayoum and two nights on the Mediterranean coast. Suited to couples, friends and solo travelers who are comfortable with several hours in a vehicle.
Maybe not, if
- Travelers who need step-free access to every site, or who want a slow pace. Days 3 and 4 involve long hours on the road.
Honest assessment
Real trade-offs from our experience managing this tour.
Highlights
- Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Fayoum and Alexandria in six days
- Two nights in Alexandria, so the city is not a rushed day trip
- Private guide and driver on the Fayoum day
Things to Consider
- Day 3 is a full day out of Cairo and day 4 is mostly a road day
- No spare night in Cairo before the flight home
- Uneven ground and steps at Giza and in the Alexandria catacombs
Where it fits
A good fit for travelers with a week or less who want Cairo, a day out of town and the Mediterranean coast. It does not include the Nile temples or a Nile cruise.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Many Egypt tours treat Alexandria as a long day trip from Cairo. This tour gives it two nights and adds a private Fayoum day, so the pace on the coast is calmer. Hotel standard is your choice; the route does not change.

Children & families
Children are welcome. Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate at any age. Entrance tickets are free for children under 6 and full price from 6. Hotel prices depend on the child's age and the room used, so we give you the exact figure when you tell us the age at booking. Days 3 and 4 are long in the vehicle, which younger children may find tiring.
Accessibility
Who can join this
This tour involves walking on uneven stone and sand at Giza, steps and long corridors in museums and the Alexandria catacombs, and several hours in a vehicle on days 3, 4 and 6. The Giza Plateau has little shade. The vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site, and the catacombs in particular have steps. Tell us your needs when you book and we will say honestly which parts are suitable.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
Most of this tour is by road, and vehicle types vary, so we do not claim a carbon saving. Guiding is done by local Egyptologists and guides, and the arrangements are made through local suppliers in Cairo, Fayoum and Alexandria, so much of what you spend stays in the places you visit. We ask guests to bring a refillable water bottle and to take their rubbish with them at Wadi El Rayan.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Is the Fayoum day tiring?
It is a full day of about ten hours, with a lot of time in the vehicle, and nothing else is planned that day. You have a private guide and driver, and you sleep in your Cairo hotel again at night.02How many nights are in each city?
Three nights in Cairo (days 1, 2 and 3) and two nights in Alexandria (days 4 and 5). Day 6 ends with the transfer to Cairo Airport, so there is no sixth night.03Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are the same at every standard.04Are the guide and entrance fees included?
On day 2, yes: an Egyptologist, entrance fees to the Giza Plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum, and lunch. On day 3 you have a private English-speaking guide and lunch. For the Alexandria days we confirm the guiding and entrance arrangements with you before you pay.05Will I make my international flight?
Your flight home is a separate booking from this tour, and day 6 includes a drive from Alexandria to Cairo. We have put no spare night in Cairo at the end, so choose an evening or night flight, not a morning one. If you connect through another airport, take travel insurance that covers missed connections.06What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks other than those stated, meals other than those stated, and the inside of the Khufu pyramid.07Is this tour private?
Yes. Your guides and drivers are private on the sightseeing days, and the transfers are in private vehicles.08When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for walking. Alexandria is breezy and can be wet in winter, so bring a light jacket. Summers are hot in Cairo and Fayoum, so days start early.
