The short answer
5-Day Egypt Food Tour: Cairo & Alexandria is a 5-day, 4-night trip to Cairo and Alexandria: 3 nights in Cairo and 1 in Alexandria. It includes an Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transfers. Prices start at $995 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
Egypt is easiest to understand through its food. This five-day tour starts with a tasting walk through Cairo after dark, the evening you arrive. The next day you walk Al-Muizz Street and Khan El Khalili, then take a felucca on the Nile at sunset.
On day 3 you travel by road to Alexandria for a walk through its street food, seafood and old cafés. Day 4 gives you the city's main sights in a half day, then the road back to Cairo. We book your hotels and every private transfer. You choose the standard of hotel when you book, and the tastings and sights stay the same.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
5 Days / 4 Nights · Cairo · Al-Muizz Street · Khan El Khalili · Nile Felucca · Alexandria · Qaitbay Citadel
- 1
A representative meets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and drives you to your hotel. Meet-and-assist is included. Once you have settled in, your private tasting walk starts from the hotel door. You go on foot through Cairo's streets in the evening and try the local dishes along the way. These are tastings, not a full dinner, so you can add a meal of your own if you are hungry.
Arrival times vary, so we set the start of the walk around your flight.
- 2
After breakfast you walk Islamic Cairo with your Egyptologist guide. Al-Muizz Street is lined with mosques, gates and old houses, and it leads into the lanes of Khan El Khalili, the city's best-known bazaar. Take your time here; this is the place to look at spices, lamps and sweets. The transport and the guide are included.
Later in the day you board a felucca, the traditional sailing boat of the Nile, for a ride at sunset. You come back to the same Cairo hotel for the night.
- 3
After breakfast a private vehicle takes you north from Cairo to Alexandria, Egypt's port city on the Mediterranean. Once you arrive, a guide leads a tasting walk: street food, fresh seafood and a stop in an old café. As in Cairo, these are tastings and not a set lunch or dinner, so plan any extra meals yourself. You sleep in an Alexandria hotel, close to the sea.
Please tell us at booking about any dietary needs; vegetarian choices are easy to find, but we cannot promise allergen control.
- 4
Your half-day tour of Alexandria is led by an Egyptologist guide, with the entrance fees and transport included. You visit Qaitbay Citadel, the fort on the harbor built on the site of the old lighthouse, then the Roman Theatre, and finish at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the modern library on the waterfront. After the visit your driver takes you back to Cairo by road, to your hotel for the night.
It is a long day with a lot of time in the vehicle, but the pace of the sightseeing is easy.
- 5
Have breakfast at the hotel and check out. A private driver takes you to Cairo Airport for your flight home, with luggage help and a representative at the terminal. The transfer is arranged around your flight time, so there is no set schedule for the morning. If you have free hours before you leave, ask your hotel to store your bags. No sightseeing is planned for this day.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Come to the first-night tasting walk hungry and skip a big hotel dinner, since the stops add up quickly.
- 02
Visit Al-Muizz Street in the golden light before sunset, when the carved facades glow and the lanes cool down.
- 03
Keep a small bag with tissues and hand sanitizer for the Alexandria street food stops, where plates are eaten standing.
- 04
Ask your guide to point you to the Roman Theater mosaics and the best view of Qaitbay Citadel from the corniche.
Tailor it
Make it yours
Choose your hotel standard when you book. Tell us about vegetarian or other dietary needs, and ask about adding a day for the Giza Pyramids or the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Worth knowing
How this compares
Most Egypt tours are built around temples and museums. This one is built around food and old streets, with no domestic flights, and the tastings are small samples rather than full meals. Hotel standard is your choice; the walks and sights do not change.

Children & families
Children are welcome. Every child takes a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate at any age. Hotel prices depend on the child's age and the room used, so we give you the exact figure when you tell us the age at booking. The tasting walks are on foot, through busy streets and in the evening on day 1, which suits school-age children better than toddlers.
Accessibility
Who can join this
Most of this tour is on foot. Old Cairo and Alexandria have uneven pavements, cobbles, steps, crowded lanes and traffic, and the felucca is boarded from the riverbank. The vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access on the walks or at every sight. Vegetarian meals are easy to find in Egypt. We cannot promise allergen control at street stalls and cafés, so tell us about any dietary need or allergy when you book and we will say honestly what the tastings can do.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
There are no flights inside Egypt on this tour. Hotels and tastings are with local businesses, and we keep the walks to small stalls, cafés and family-run places so your money stays in the neighborhood. Transfers are by private vehicle and the type varies, so we do not claim a carbon saving. We ask guests to bring a refillable water bottle and to take litter with them from the street.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Is this a food tour with full meals?
No. The tastings on days 1 and 3 are tasting walks: small portions at several stops, not a set dinner or lunch. Breakfast is included at the hotel on days 2 to 5. Plan your own lunches and dinners, and your guide can suggest places.02Can you cater for vegetarians and other diets?
Vegetarian eating is easy in Egypt, and we can ask the guide to choose stops that suit you. We cannot promise allergen control at street stalls and old cafés, so please tell us about any dietary need or allergy when you book.03Is the street food safe to eat?
Your guide takes you to busy, popular stalls and cafés where the food is cooked fresh, which is the best advice for anywhere in the world. Travelers with sensitive stomachs should bring their usual medication and drink bottled water.04Will I make my international flight?
There are no domestic flights on this tour, so the main risk is road traffic. Your last night is in a Cairo hotel after the drive back from Alexandria, and your airport transfer is set around your flight time. International tickets are booked separately from this tour. If you connect to another trip on day 5, choose a flight in the afternoon or evening, and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.05How long is the drive to Alexandria?
Alexandria is a drive of several hours by road from Cairo, and you make the trip twice, on days 3 and 4. Traffic decides the time. Days 3 and 4 are the longest days of the tour.06Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels in Cairo and Alexandria for your dates. The tastings, sights and transfers are the same at every standard.07Are the Pyramids of Giza included?
No. This tour is about food and the old streets of Cairo and Alexandria, and it does not include the Giza Pyramids or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Ask us and we can add a day for them.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, lunches and dinners other than the tastings, drinks you order yourself, travel insurance and personal expenses.
