A long stop at Cairo Airport is a chance to see the Pyramids, but it needs honest arithmetic. The plateau is about an hour's drive from the airport, depending on traffic, and you have to allow time to get back.
How many hours do you need
Think of 8 hours or more from landing to your next departure. You need time to clear passport control, a drive of about an hour each way, around two and a half hours at Giza, and three hours back at the airport before your flight. Add a margin.
With less time, the risk of missing your flight rises quickly. We would rather tell you no than sell you a tour that cannot work.
The visa question
To leave the airport, you must be able to enter Egypt, usually with a visa. The tour does not include the visa. Check the rules for your passport well before you travel, and tell us if you are unsure.
How the tour works
- Your guide meets you in the arrivals hall after passport control
- A private vehicle drives you across the city to Giza
- You see the Great Pyramid, Khafre, Menkaure and the panorama point
- You see the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple
- You stop for a light lunch or a snack if time allows
- You return to the airport at least three hours before your flight
Entry inside the pyramids is not included, and it takes time that a layover rarely has.
What could go wrong
Traffic is the main risk. A delayed flight in, or a slow border queue, takes minutes from the plan. Your guide watches the clock and will cut the visit short to protect your return. Even so, we cannot guarantee that you make your onward flight, and the decision to go out is yours.
Who should skip it
If your layover is under 8 hours, if you cannot enter the country, or if you would be anxious about the clock, stay airside and rest. A longer layover, or a night in Cairo, would let you see Giza properly.
If the timing works, it is a good use of a long gap. Share your flight details and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
Bring a printed or saved copy of your onward booking, as well as your passport. If you can, travel with hand luggage only so you do not need to wait at the belt or find storage.
On the plateau, you will see the pyramids from the panorama point and up close at the base of the Great Pyramid. The Sphinx and the Valley Temple are next, and your guide keeps the pace brisk.
If your flight is late at night, you may have time for a longer visit. Share the times and we will say what is realistic.
