Cairo from Hurghada: is it worth it, and flight or road?

A private day by air takes about 15 hours; the shared overnight coach takes about 20. Here is what each day is like and how to choose.

Cairo is worth a day from Hurghada if the pyramids are on your list and you will not be in Cairo otherwise. The Giza Plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum are the reason people make the effort. It is not a relaxing day, and we say so up front. Choose by air if your budget allows, and by road only if cost is the deciding factor.

Hurghada and Cairo are roughly 400 to 450 kilometers apart. The coast road takes about six hours each way, which is why the coach trip lasts 20 hours. A flight takes about one hour, which is why the private flight trip fits into 15. That gap of five hours is mostly what you are choosing between.

Is Cairo worth the effort from Hurghada

Giza is the only place in Egypt where the pyramids stand, and the Grand Egyptian Museum sits close to them with the Tutankhamun collection inside. If you are in Hurghada for a week and will not otherwise see Cairo, one day is enough to stand at the Great Pyramid, look at the Sphinx and see the main museum galleries. It will not give you Old Cairo, the Citadel or the markets.

If you are traveling with young children, or you know you tire on long days, think about Luxor instead, where the drive is shorter. Or give Cairo a stay of its own on another trip. A single day is a taste, not a visit, and the guide will tell you that too.

How the flight day runs

The private flight trip begins at 04:00 with a transfer from your hotel to Hurghada Airport. You fly to Cairo at about 06:00, and your guide and driver meet you at Cairo Airport at 07:30. Flight times follow the airline schedule on your date, so the exact hours are confirmed when you book. Everything on the ground is private: your party has its own Egyptologist guide and its own air-conditioned vehicle.

  • 08:45 – Giza Plateau: the Great Pyramid, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the panorama point
  • 11:00 – the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple
  • 12:15 – lunch at a local restaurant near Giza
  • 13:30 – Grand Egyptian Museum, including the Grand Staircase and the Tutankhamun galleries
  • 17:00 – transfer to Cairo Airport, flight home at about 19:30

You land back in Hurghada in the evening and a private transfer takes you to your hotel. Because the day is private, the pace can follow your party, with extra time at the pyramids or a shorter lunch if you want more time in the museum.

How the road day runs

The shared coach picks you up at 01:00 from Hurghada, El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh or Soma Bay. You drive along the Red Sea coast road for about six hours with a rest stop, reaching the Giza Plateau around 08:00. The three pyramids and the panorama point come first, then the Sphinx at 10:15, and a museum visit at 11:30.

The museum is either the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, as confirmed on booking. Lunch is at 14:00, and the coach leaves for the coast at 15:00. Expect to arrive back at your hotel around 21:00. It is a hard day, particularly on the way home, when most people sleep. A neck pillow earns its place in the bag.

Which one to choose

The flight trip is the better experience in almost every respect. You are fresh at the pyramids, you have a guide who belongs to your party alone, and you see the Tutankhamun galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum with time to spare. Its price per person falls as the party grows, so a family or group of four often finds it closer to the coach than expected.

The road trip suits solo travelers and couples watching their budget, and people who are happy to sleep on a coach. It is also the only choice if you want to avoid flying. Be honest with yourself about the first two hours, when the coach is dark and cold, and about how you will feel at 21:00.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth going to Cairo from Hurghada for one day?
Yes, if the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum matter to you and you will not visit Cairo otherwise. It is a demanding day, but a guide handles tickets and logistics. If you would rather not rush, plan Cairo as a separate stay with Giza at its center.
How long is the flight from Hurghada to Cairo?
Flying takes about one hour. The whole trip still takes about 15 hours, because it includes an early airport transfer, check-in, time on the ground in Cairo and the evening flight back. Flight times follow the airline schedule on your date.
Why does the road trip take 20 hours?
Six hours each way on the coast road, including a rest stop. Add the 01:00 pick-up, a full day at Giza, the Sphinx, a museum and lunch, and the coach is back around 21:00. It is the lowest-cost option, and also the hardest.
Which museum do I visit on the bus trip?
Either the Grand Egyptian Museum or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and we confirm which one when you book. If you specifically want the Tutankhamun galleries, tell our team before booking. The flight trip always goes to the Grand Egyptian Museum, including those galleries.
Can children do the Cairo day trip?
They can, but the road trip is very hard on small children because of the 01:00 start and 12 hours in a coach. The flight trip is easier. Shared trips charge half price for ages 2 to 11 and nothing under 2.
