Many travelers who visit Alexandria never see Cairo, and many who visit Cairo never see Alexandria. The day trip joins them for people who cannot do both on separate legs. It is a real commitment, so it deserves an honest answer.
The drive from Alexandria to Giza is about three hours on the desert road. You leave early and arrive in time to see the Pyramids before the middle of the day. Then you reverse the journey, reaching Alexandria in the evening.
What you see
The plateau comes first: the Great Pyramid, Khafre and Menkaure, with time at the panorama point where all three line up. Then you visit the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple beside it. Lunch is at a local restaurant close by.
The afternoon is at the Grand Egyptian Museum. You climb the Grand Staircase, lined with statues, and spend time in the Tutankhamun galleries. It is a huge building, so your guide picks a route rather than trying to cover everything.
What it costs you
The main cost is time. You spend about six hours in a car, plus the rest stop. Some people are fine with that, as the roads are smooth and the vehicle is air-conditioned. Others find it wearing, particularly in summer.
You also lose a full day in Alexandria. If you only have two days in the city, that is half of your stay. Be sure the Pyramids are worth that to you.
Who should say yes
- Travelers on a cruise or a short trip who will not reach Cairo otherwise
- Anyone who wants the Pyramids and the museum and accepts a long day
- Groups with a mix of ages who are comfortable on long drives
Families with small children, travelers with back problems and anyone prone to car sickness should think twice. A private vehicle makes it easier, as you can stop when needed, but 13 hours is still 13 hours.
Who should say no
If you are going on to Cairo later in your trip, skip this version and see Giza properly with a full day there. If you have only a few hours in port, it does not fit at all. And if your real interest is Alexandria, the city itself gives you more for the same day.
When in doubt, tell us your plans. We would rather suggest a shorter trip than sell a long day that is wrong for you.
How to make the day easier
Set out with a light breakfast and a bottle of water. The early drive is quiet, and many people sleep on the way. A neck pillow and a charged phone make the time pass more comfortably.
On the plateau, take your time with the panorama point and the Sphinx, then eat lunch before the museum. The Grand Egyptian Museum is large, so tell your guide what you most want to see, such as the Tutankhamun galleries, and the route can be shaped around that.
On the drive back, expect to be tired. Most guests rest, look at their photos and arrive in Alexandria in the evening. If that sounds like a good day, book it. If it sounds like too much, a shorter day in the city will still give you a fine trip.
Whichever way you decide, we are happy to talk it through. Send us your dates, your group and the rest of your plans, and we will say whether the long day makes sense. Discovery Tours Egypt has been running trips since 1988, and we would rather give you a straight answer than a sale.
If you do take the day, the effort is rewarded at the plateau, where the scale of the Pyramids is something photographs do not prepare you for. Many guests say the long drive faded from memory within minutes of arriving.
