Cairo day trips: how to choose the right one

Pyramids, desert rides, oases, flights south and evenings out: what each day asks of you.

Cairo gives you more choice than most visitors expect. Beyond the Giza Plateau there are older pyramids, an oasis, a fossil valley, a beach and two deserts. The question is which of them fits the days you have.

Here the trips are grouped by the kind of day they give you. Pick one or two from each group at most, and leave room to rest.

Pyramids and ancient sites by road

The Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur day takes about 8 hours and covers the Step Pyramid, the Bent and Red Pyramids and the open-air museum at Memphis. It suits people who have seen, or will see, Giza and want to understand how pyramids developed.

If you have a long wait at Cairo Airport, the layover tour goes straight from arrivals to the Pyramids and the Sphinx and brings you back in time for your onward flight. It needs a generous gap between flights, and you must be able to enter Egypt.

Short outings in the desert

A camel ride at sunset, a horse ride or a quad ride each take about 3 hours from hotel to hotel. These happen in the desert beside the Giza Plateau, not inside the ticketed site, so the pyramids are your view rather than your destination.

  • Camel ride – slow, easy, good at sunset
  • Horse ride – about an hour and a half, for people who can sit a horse
  • Quad ride – the active choice, by request

Longer days away from the city

The Fayoum day runs about 11 hours and mixes an oasis lake, waterfalls and the fossil whales of Wadi El Hitan. The Ain Sokhna day is a beach day on the Red Sea coast, about 10 hours with the drive. The White Desert is a two-day trip with a night in camp.

Flights south in a day

You can fly to Luxor for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, or to Abu Simbel for the temples of Ramses II. Both are long, tiring days, 14 to 16 hours. They suit travelers who cannot add a stop in Upper Egypt. Both are booked online and confirmed after we check flight seats.

Evenings

The food tour and the Cairo by night tour each last about 4 hours. They are a good way to use a day when you arrive late or leave late, and they are easy on the legs.

A balanced plan

With five days in Cairo you might do Giza and the museum on day one, the food tour that evening, Saqqara and Dahshur on day three, a rest day, and a desert ride on the last afternoon. Add a flight day only if you can sleep in the next morning.

Tell us your dates and who is traveling. We will suggest an order that spreads out the early starts.

If you are on a short stopover, the layover tour and the evening trips are the easiest to fit. If you have a week, the longer days away from the city are where Cairo day trips repay the effort.

Every trip here starts from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, except the layover tour, which starts at the airport. That keeps the logistics simple, and the vehicle waits while you see each stop.

Booking is simple. Most trips are confirmed once you pick a date. The two flight days are confirmed after we check seats, and the quad ride and White Desert are requests that we confirm with the final price before any payment.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

Are the trips private?
Yes. Each trip has its own vehicle and driver, and the full-day trips come with a guide.
Where do the trips start?
At your hotel in Cairo or Giza. The layover tour starts at Cairo Airport.
Which trip is best for a first visit?
Most first-time visitors do Giza first, then add Saqqara and Dahshur for a day that shows how pyramids began.
Can I combine two trips in one day?
A desert ride and an evening tour fit together. Two long days do not, so we advise against them.
What if I am not sure which to book?
Send us your dates and your group. We will suggest a short list.
