What Marsa Matrouh actually is

Marsa Matrouh is a port city about 240 kilometers west of Alexandria and 222 kilometers east of Sallum, near the Libyan border. Its bay is the draw. A line of rocks forms a natural breakwater across the mouth, so the water inside stays calm and clear over soft white sand. Egyptians come for the beaches in summer, and the city has the coolest summer days of any Egyptian resort town.

There is history under the sand. Matrouh was a grain port for Rome, known then as Paraetonium, and a temple of Ramesses II once stood here around 1200 BC. In the Second World War it was a British base and a target for Rommel's Afrika Korps. Today most visitors come for the water, then add Siwa Oasis, about 300 kilometers southwest across the desert. The resort strip and the El Alamein battlefield on the road from Alexandria are covered in our North Coast guide.

What Marsa Matrouh is known for

Cleopatra's Bath

A rock formation on the shore is hollowed out from the inside, with openings on both sides that let the tide flow in. The tale that Cleopatra bathed here is local tradition, but the sea-filled pool is real and the setting is a good place for a swim and photographs.

The town beach and corniche

The city beach runs along the sheltered bay, with umbrellas, boat rides and the coast road beside it. Farther west, Agiba Beach is known for its natural caves and turquoise water, and Al-Obayed Beach is another stretch of pale sand. Go in the morning, before the summer crowds.

A day or more

Rommel's Cave

A small museum in a cave cut into the rock above the sea. Local tradition ties it to Erwin Rommel, who planned operations here. Inside are wartime items such as guns and maps. It is short, so pair it with a beach day.

Time to allow

How many days in Marsa Matrouh?

Matrouh is a beach stay. Three to five nights is enough, longer if you add Siwa.

2–3 nightsThe short beach break

The town beach, Cleopatra's Bath and an afternoon at Agiba. Enough for a first look at the bay.

4–5 nightsThe right amount

Beach days, Rommel's Cave and a slower pace, with time to try more than one beach along the coast.

Add SiwaThe desert detour

Another two or three nights in Siwa Oasis, reached by a road of about 300 kilometers across the desert.

Where it fits

Marsa Matrouh in your itinerary

Marsa Matrouh fits travelers who want clear water more than sightseeing.

Beach-first trips

Soft white sand and a bay with calm water. It is the Mediterranean answer to a Red Sea beach stay.

Siwa-bound travelers

Matrouh is the usual stop on the way to Siwa Oasis, about 300 kilometers to the southwest.

Along the coast

About 240 kilometers west of Alexandria, it works as the far end of a coast road that passes El Alamein.

Summer only

This is a June to September place. Outside those months it is quiet, and we would not build a beach trip around it.

Best time to visit

When to go to Marsa Matrouh

Come in summer. The beaches are at their best from June to September.

June–September · best

The sea is warm, the beach facilities are open and the city has the coolest summer days of any Egyptian resort town.

July–August · busiest

The height of the season. Go early in the day and book ahead.

Winter · quiet

Winters are mild but wetter than most of Egypt, with some rain, and the beach season is over. Visit for the museum and a change of pace, not for swimming.

Siwa's weather

The oasis is far hotter than the coast in summer and can drop to about 5°C on winter nights, so plan clothing for each end of the trip.
