Daytime in Cairo can be hot, loud and crowded. After sunset the heat drops, the lights come on and people fill the cafes and streets. If you have a free evening, it deserves a plan.
Cairo by night
This private four-hour evening starts around 18:30. You go first to the Cairo Tower for a view of the city lights from the observation deck. Then you drive along the Nile corniche and cross Qasr El Nil Bridge. The last stop is Khan el-Khalili, the old bazaar, where you walk the lanes and have tea at a traditional cafe.
Dinner and shopping are not included, so you can eat where you like.
A food walk
If food matters more than sights, the private food tour starts around 18:00. A local guide takes you downtown for koshari, then falafel and ful, grilled meat, fresh juice and sweets with mint tea. Tastings and soft drinks are included, and no alcohol is served.
- Cairo by night – views, the Nile and the bazaar, about 4 hours
- Food tour – tastings and local cafes, about 4 hours
Other ways to spend an evening
A dinner cruise on the Nile is a popular choice: a boat with a meal, music and the lights on the water. It is a relaxed way to end a day, though the food is more for show than for taste.
The sound and light show at the Pyramids uses lights and narration on the Giza Plateau after dark. It suits families and travelers who want a different view of the site. Check the schedule and language before you go, because times change.
Which one to choose
Choose Cairo by night if you want a general feel of the city and an easy walk. Choose the food tour if you like to eat and talk to a local. If you can, do one on your first evening, when you are awake and the city is new, and keep another for later in your stay.
Both tours are private, so the pace follows your group. Tell us if anyone finds walking hard.
Khan el-Khalili is busy until late. Prices are rarely fixed, and bargaining is expected. A guide can tell you which shops are honest and which are only for show.
The Nile corniche is also a place where Cairenes stroll in the evening. Seeing families out on the bridges gives you a feel for the city beyond the sights.
If you travel in the hot months, evening trips are especially welcome. You see more and sweat less.
