What Soma Bay actually is

Soma Bay is a peninsula on Egypt's Red Sea coast, about 45 kilometers south of Hurghada airport and roughly 28 kilometers north of the port town of Safaga. It measures about 5 kilometers long and 2 wide, and the sea laps most of its edge. One private road, around 7 kilometers long, links it to the mainland, and you need a hotel or activity booking to get through the gate.

Two kinds of water sit on either side. One shore faces open sea and a living reef, which is why divers like it. The other looks into a calm, shallow bay with soft sand, which is why kitesurfers come from all over. That bay is shared with Abu Soma, the stretch of mainland coast across the water, where more resorts line the shore on the way to Safaga. Soma Bay itself stays small and orderly: a handful of big resorts, a marina, a golf course and a spa, with shuttles and golf carts instead of taxis.

Kitesurfing in the lagoon

The wind blows from the north-west and speeds up as it crosses the desert hills. From May to October it averages about 22 knots, and September afternoons can reach 25–30. The lagoon is wide, shallow and sandy, with few hazards, so beginners and freestylers share it. Launch spots run side-shore to cross-offshore depending on where you stand, which is why the schools run a rescue boat.

The house reef and the jetty

A long wooden jetty carries you out over the reef, and the house reef at Ras Abu Soma suits snorkelers and divers of every level. The dive centers run boats from the marina to Panorama Reef and to walls, caves and canyons that are less crowded than many Red Sea sites.

Golf, the spa and the marina

The 18-hole, par 72 course was designed by Gary Player and runs beside the water. The Cascades resort next to it has one of the biggest thalassotherapy spas in the region, a good plan for a day with no wind.

Best time to visit

When to go to Soma Bay

Soma Bay works all year. Pick the month by what you want to do on the water.

May–October · peak wind

The windiest months, with strong afternoon breezes. Land temperatures are high, so most people beach early or late.

March, April, November · mid season

Good for kitesurfing and easier on the heat. Winter wind is less reliable, but there are still about three or four windy days a week.

December–February · mild

Sunny days and cool nights. The sea sits near 20°C, and kitesurfers wear a light wetsuit.

Sea temperature

The water ranges from about 20°C in winter to about 28°C in summer, so bring a shorty for winter wind days.
