What El Quseir actually is

El Quseir is a working Red Sea port of about 50,000 people, 138 kilometers south of Hurghada and 130 kilometers north of Marsa Alam. It is far older than the resort coast around it. A harbor has served this stretch of shore for thousands of years, and it was historically the end of the Wadi Hammamat trail, the desert route linking the Nile valley to the sea. In the Ottoman period it was a main departure port for pilgrims bound for Mecca.

What is left is easy to walk. An Ottoman fort from the 1570s stands near the waterfront, now a museum. Around it are narrow streets of shuttered, balconied houses, and further along the shore the big buildings of the Italian-run phosphate company that mined here in the early 1900s. Most visitors come for half a day from a Marsa Alam hotel. The beach resorts and Coraya Bay are about 70 kilometers south, near the airport, so this is a different kind of stop.

What El Quseir is known for

The Ottoman fort

Built in the 1570s to guard the harbor and the pilgrim route, the fort held out against British naval forces when Napoleon's troops occupied it in the 1790s. Today it is a small museum. Old cannons stand in the courtyard beside phosphate trucks and a replica of a historic dhow.

1–2 hours

The old town

Short streets of two-storey houses with wooden balconies and shutters, a few steps from the water. Many look weathered. It is a lived-in town, not a restored set, which is much of its appeal.

1–2 hours on foot

Phosphate-era buildings

In the early 1900s an Italian-backed company opened phosphate mines and a processing plant here, and its large works still stand on the north side of town. Together with the carts in the fort, they mark a second chapter of the port's story, after the pilgrim years.
