Cairo rewards the patient explorer. Beyond the Pyramids that dominate every itinerary, the city's Islamic and Coptic quarters hold 1,400 years of layered history. A day tour from Cairo takes you into this depth – a private Egyptologist guides you past the queues, explains the hieroglyphs, and navigates the Khan el-Khalili bazaar so you leave with treasures rather than tourist tat.

The best day tour in Cairo is the one you don't have to organize yourself. We've been arranging them, in this country, since 1988.

What you'll see

Cairo, in the order that makes sense

A full day comfortably covers two or three of the stops below – your guide tailors the mix to your pace, interests and the season.

The Pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx
01

The Pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx

The only surviving wonder of the ancient world, and the reason most people come to Egypt. Go early: you'll have the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx and the panorama point before the coaches arrive. Interior access and a camel walk are optional add-ons.

~3.5 hrsOptional: pyramid interior
The Grand Egyptian Museum
02

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The largest archaeological museum on earth, on the Giza plateau – and the only place to see Tutankhamun's complete 5,000-piece collection together. It pairs naturally with the Pyramids next door, so most full days take in both.

~3.5 hrsMinutes from Giza
Islamic & Coptic Cairo
03

Islamic & Coptic Cairo

The Citadel of Saladin and the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali crown the skyline; below, the Hanging Church and the lanes of Coptic Cairo hold the city's Christian story. A quieter, human-scale counterpoint to the plateau.

~3.5 hrsModest dress advised
Saqqara & Memphis
04

Saqqara & Memphis

Egypt's very first pyramid – the Step Pyramid of Djoser – and the open-air remains of Memphis, the country's first capital, half an hour south of Giza. The standout add-on for travelers with the appetite for a longer day.

+3.5 hrs~30 min south of Giza
Khan el-Khalili bazaar
05

Khan el-Khalili bazaar

Trading since the 1380s – copper, spice, perfume oils and proper Egyptian coffee. Your guide steers you to the makers rather than the markups, and to El Fishawy, the café that has barely closed in 250 years. A relaxed finish to the day.

~1.5 hrsBest late afternoon
National Museum of Egyptian Civilization
06

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

Home to the Royal Mummies Hall – 22 kings and queens, including Ramesses II and Hatshepsut, moved here in the 2021 Golden Parade. A hushed, purpose-built gallery in Old Cairo, and the quiet counterpoint to the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Memphis & Grand Egyptian Museum Day Tour

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Memphis & Grand Egyptian Museum Day Tour

A private day tour from Cairo visiting Khufu Pyramid exterior, the Great Sphinx, Saqqara necropolis, Memphis and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Our Egyptologist leads the visits and we provide private air-conditioned transport and hotel pickup. We keep 60–90 minutes at Saqqara rather than the 20–30 minutes commonly allotted by large coach tours; that lets you see the Step Pyramid complex and the fine reliefs with time to walk the site. Entrance fees for these standard sites are included; Khufu Pyramid interior tickets, premium tombs, and gratuities are excluded unless you request them. Expect crowds at Giza and limited shade during midday; uneven ancient stone requires sturdy shoes.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis Day Tour

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis Day Tour

Visit Khufu Pyramid, the Great Sphinx, Djoser Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and Ramses II's colossus at Memphis in a single day. We operate private tours only; we do not run mass-bus group departures. Your driver collects you from your hotel in Cairo or Giza, and our Egyptologist accompanies all site visits. Unlike many half-day excursions, this itinerary allocates proper time to Saqqara and Memphis rather than a rushed stop. Expect 2–3 hours of walking on uneven stone, limited shade at midday, and transfers that can reach 60 minutes in peak traffic. Standard site entrance fees are included; the Khufu pyramid interior and premium tombs are excluded unless you request them. We arrange cold water, shaded transport, and restaurant suggestions for a flexible midday break.

Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour

Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour

Explore medieval Islamic Cairo and Old Coptic Cairo in one private day tour led by a licensed Egyptian tour operator Egyptologist. We visit the Mamluk-era Sultan Hassan Mosque‑Madrassa, the adjacent Al‑Rifa'i, the Amr ibn al‑As Mosque, Khan el‑Khalili bazaar, the Hanging Church (Saint Virgin Mary), Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Coptic Museum where time allows. We do not run large coach tours; this is a walking-and-drive itinerary with a private car and Egyptologist. Unlike rushed city coach circuits, we leave time to browse Khan el‑Khalili and to enter the main churches. Trade-offs: narrow streets, uneven steps, and limited shade at midday.

Coptic Cairo Half-Day Tour

Coptic Cairo Half-Day Tour

This private half-day tour visits Coptic Cairo's core sites: the Hanging Church, Church of St. Sergius (Abu Serga), Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Coptic Museum. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and provide a private guide and air-conditioned minivan with hotel pickup in central Cairo. We don't run group bus tours; our itineraries avoid coach arrivals and allow 45–60 minutes in the Coptic Museum. Unlike combined pyramid-and-Coptic half-days, this keeps focus on Old Cairo so each site is seen at a measured pace. Trade-offs: limited shade, modest dress is required for religious sites, and some churches have low ceilings and stairs. The tour lasts about 3–4 hours.

Sakkara & Memphis Half-Day Tour from Cairo

Sakkara & Memphis Half-Day Tour from Cairo

This half-day tour visits the Djoser Step Pyramid at Sakkara and the open-air collection at Mit Rahina (Memphis). Our Cairo-based Egyptologist explains Imhotep’s architectural role and the necropolis layout; your driver meets you at the hotel with a name card and private car. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator. We operate private or small-group departures rather than large coach tours, which keeps transit time shorter and visits less crowded. Expect limited shade and uneven ancient stone at Sakkara; bring sun protection and sensible shoes. Standard site entrance fees are included; pyramid-interior access, premium tombs, and gratuities are excluded.

We do not run large coach-group itineraries on this route; the tour is private with a driver and car. This half-day tour visits the Grand Egyptian Museum's core galleries, including the Tutankhamun collection, in a focused three-hour visit. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist guides explain the chronology of objects and the funerary assemblages on display. We treat GEM as a stand-alone visit rather than bundling it with the Giza Plateau; that lets our Egyptologist explain objects without rushing. Unlike large coach tours, we keep the itinerary to highlights and allow time for questions. Trade-offs: three hours cannot cover every gallery; guests wanting detailed study should upgrade to a full-day option. Private hotel transfer and standard entrance fees are included; special-access areas or premium exhibits are excluded unless requested.

Unlike many coach day trips, we allot 90–120 minutes on the plateau. Standard site entrance fees are included; pyramid interiors (Khufu/Khafre), premium tombs, and gratuities are excluded unless requested. National Museum of Egyptian Civilization – Cairo

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization – Cairo

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat presents Egypt’s material culture from prehistoric times to the present. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologists lead private, timed visits that typically last 2–3 hours. Unlike operators who squeeze several Cairo museums into one afternoon, we allocate enough time for the Mummies Hall, the chronological galleries, and conservation displays. We arrange pick-up from central Cairo and short orientation on arrival. Trade-offs: the Mummies Hall uses low light and offers limited seating, so expect standing and brief queues during peak season.

Free Day – Leisure Day in Cairo

Spend a flexible leisure day in Cairo; we arrange hotel or Cairo Airport meet, luggage storage, and a private driver or Egyptologist on request. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we do not run group bus tours; this day is deliberately unstructured so you control timing and activities. No sightseeing or standard site entrance fees are included by default; pyramid interiors (Khufu/Khafre), premium tombs (Tutankhamun/Seti I), and gratuities are excluded unless explicitly requested. Nile Dinner Cruise & Evening Show, Cairo

Board a licensed Nile boat in Cairo for a two- to three-hour seated dinner with live tanoura, belly dance and an Arabic band. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we arrange private or small-group charters rather than coach-based package transfers. Unlike riverside restaurants, the cruise shows Cairo landmarks such as the Cairo Tower and the Citadel from the water. Expect loud live music, limited space on some boats, and a late finish that can mean Cairo traffic after disembarkation. During Ramadan show content, alcohol service and timings often change; tell us your travel dates so we can confirm logistics.

Alexandria Day Tour – incl. Wadi Natrun Monasteries

Alexandria Day Tour – incl. Wadi Natrun Monasteries

A full-day private tour from Cairo visiting Alexandria’s major sites and two Coptic monasteries in Wadi Natrun. We travel by private vehicle with one Egyptologist for the whole day; we do not run coach-bus group schedules. Unlike cruise-shore excursions that start from the port, this itinerary begins and ends in Cairo so you avoid port transfers. Expect a long day with significant driving: Alexandria is about 220 km (≈3 hours) from central Cairo and Wadi Natrun is about 90 km (≈1.5 hours). Moderate walking on uneven ancient stone and monastery courtyards is required.

From $152
Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour – Giza Plateau

Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour – Giza Plateau

This half-day tour visits the Giza Plateau, including Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. The Giza Plateau contains those three pyramids and the Great Sphinx. Our Cairo-based Egyptologists lead every visit; we do not run large group bus tours. Unlike shuttle or cruise-day schedules that combine several Cairo sites, we keep this visit focused on the plateau so you have time to walk the causeways and photograph the Sphinx properly. Note the trade-offs: limited shade at midday and uneven ancient stone underfoot. Pyramid interior entry to Khufu/Khafre is excluded unless requested. Operated by a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

Questions we hear most

Cairo day tours, answered

Can I see the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in one day?
Yes – it's our most popular Cairo day tour. The Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum are minutes apart on the Giza plateau, so a full private day (8–10 hours) comfortably covers both with a licensed Egyptologist. Add Saqqara and Memphis if you want a longer day.
How many days do you need in Cairo?
Two full days covers the essentials: one for Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, and one for Islamic and Coptic Cairo plus the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. A third day lets you add Saqqara, Memphis and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (home to the Royal Mummies).
How much does a Cairo day tour cost?
Private day tours in Cairo start from $59 per person, with the exact rate depending on the itinerary, group size and season. Every Discovery Tours Egypt day tour is private and all-inclusive: a licensed Egyptologist guide, air-conditioned vehicle, hotel pickup and drop-off, and all listed entry fees. There are no hidden add-ons at the sites.
Are your Cairo day tours private?
Yes. Every day tour we run is fully private – just your party, your own Egyptologist guide and your own driver. Nothing is shared with strangers, and the pace, stops and timing are tailored to you on the day.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off at your Cairo hotel (or Nile cruise dock, where relevant) are included at no extra cost. Your guide meets you in the lobby; if your plans change, the local office that arranged the day tour can adjust it on the day.
When is the best time to visit Cairo?
October to April is the most comfortable season, with warm days and cool evenings ideal for sightseeing. May to September is hotter, so day tours start early to beat the midday heat – and you'll often find fewer crowds and lower prices. We run day tours in Cairo year-round.
Is it safe, and are families welcome?
Yes on both counts. We've operated in Egypt since 1988 from offices nationwide, with 24/7 in-country support, and day tours run with our own vetted guides and drivers. Families are very welcome – guides adjust the pace and content for children, and we can arrange car seats and shorter itineraries.
