The short answer

Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour is a 1-day Cairo excursion covering the Citadel of Saladin, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Hanging Church, and St Sergius in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.

Best time to go

The most comfortable months for Cairo sightseeing are generally October through April, when daytime temperatures are milder and walking conditions are easier. Summer visits are still possible, but midday heat can be high, so earlier departures are usually preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, opening hours and traffic patterns can change, so timing should be confirmed in advance.

02 Overview

A first look

This private day tour covers core Islamic and Coptic sites in historic Cairo, including Sultan Hassan, Al‑Rifa'i, Khan el‑Khalili, the Hanging Church, and Ben Ezra Synagogue. We supply a private Egyptologist and car; standard site entrance fees are included unless stated otherwise.

Background

The facts

Islamic and Coptic Cairo are two connected historic districts that preserve major layers of Egypt’s medieval Islamic and early Christian heritage. A typical sightseeing route combines the Citadel of Saladin, founded in 1176 under Ayyubid rule, with Old Cairo sites such as the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa) and the Church of St Sergius (Abu Serga), which is traditionally associated with the Holy Family’s stay in Egypt.

The Citadel sits on a hill east of historic Cairo and offers broad views across the city; on clear days, parts of the Giza Plateau can be seen from higher vantage points. Inside the citadel, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali was built in the 19th century and is known for its Ottoman-inspired domes, minarets, and alabaster-clad interior. The complex also contains museums and defensive structures, but the main visitor draw for this excursion is the mosque and the elevated setting.

Old Cairo, also called Coptic Cairo, preserves churches and lanes associated with the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. The Hanging Church is built above a gatehouse of the Roman Fortress of Babylon and is one of Egypt’s most famous Coptic churches. St Sergius Church is smaller and older in layout, and its underground crypt is one of the places often linked in tradition to the Holy Family route in Egypt.

Islamic Cairo refers to the medieval core of the city, where Mamluk-era mosques, madrassas, and bazaars remain part of the urban fabric. Visitors usually combine vehicle transfers with short walking sections because the streets can be narrow and traffic dense, especially around Old Cairo and the Citadel approach roads. Entrance fees for the included sites are typically handled as part of the excursion, while the route is planned to reduce waiting time and keep the schedule manageable within a single day.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01 How long does the Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour last?
Duration varies; check your booking confirmation or contact us for the exact schedule. Many guests choose a half-day (morning or afternoon) or a full-day option depending on which sites they want to include. Tell us your hotel location and preferred start time and we will confirm pickup and an estimated return time.
  2. 02 Which Cairo sites are visited on the Islamic & Coptic Cairo Tour?
Exact sites vary by itinerary; check your tour program or ask us for the day's stops. Typical itineraries mix Islamic-period monuments with Coptic-era churches and a historic bazaar, sequenced to reduce backtracking. If you want specific places named in advance, tell us and we will confirm which monuments and churches are included.
  3. 03 Are entrance fees included on the tour?
Standard site entrance fees are included unless your confirmation states otherwise. Optional or special-access areas (for example private chapels, museum special exhibitions, or expedited-access sections) may carry additional fees; we list those extras in advance. Pyramid interiors and similar premium accesses are not part of standard city tours unless explicitly noted.
  4. 04 Do I need to wear modest clothing for the tour?
Yes. Modest dress is required for visits to mosques and some churches. Women should have a scarf to cover hair and both genders should cover shoulders and knees; avoid shorts and sleeveless tops. We can loan a scarf in most cases, but bringing your own is easiest, especially in peak season when demand is high.
  5. 05 Is hotel pickup and drop-off included?
Pickup and drop-off from Cairo hotels is normally included; please check your confirmation for exact pickup time and meeting location. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and, unlike large coach operators, we organise private transfers or small-group vehicles to avoid taxi negotiations and repeated stops. For bookings outside central Cairo we may propose a nearby meeting point and will confirm that in advance.
  6. 06 Can the tour include the Coptic Museum or Khan el-Khalili bazaar?
Yes; both can be added to a custom itinerary but must be confirmed when you book. Museums are best visited in the morning to avoid heat and crowds; bazaars work well late afternoon when stalls are busiest. If you want those stops, tell us your priorities so we can allocate time correctly rather than rushing each site.

Our Egyptologist accompanies the transfer and guides you at both temples: the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari. We normally depart before sunrise (around 3:00–3:30 AM) so you arrive for morning light and cooler temperatures; expect roughly two hours on site. Distinctive point of view: we prefer road transfers because they avoid airport queues and deliver a predictable schedule. Trade-offs: it is an early start and a long round trip, with limited shade at the site midday.
