Best time to go

The most comfortable months are usually October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor are milder and walking conditions are better for monument visits. May to September is hotter, especially in Upper Egypt, so early starts and sun protection are important. During Ramadan and major public holidays, opening hours, meal timing, and site crowd patterns can change slightly.

  • Discovery Tours Egypt is a licensed Egyptian tour operator
  • Guided sightseeing is led by an English-speaking Egyptologist
  • Accommodation, transfers, and site visits are arranged in a single itinerary
  • Standard entrance fees to the listed monuments are included
  • 24/7 on-the-ground coordination is available during the tour program
  • Verified traveler reviews help confirm service consistency and itinerary handling

02 Overview

A first look

By 7 am the limestone on the Giza Plateau is still cool and the plain smells faintly of dust and diesel, as light grazes Khufu's pyramid and the Sphinx's profile sharpens. Our Egyptologists lead the site visits, explaining construction and burial practices in clear terms; we do not bundle Khufu's interior visit automatically, since that requires a separate ticket and a different pace.

This itinerary alternates city archaeology with relaxed sailing days along the Nile, giving time ashore at Kom Ombo and Edfu unlike four-night cruise packages. We arrange local transfers and hotel nights, and your Egyptologist accompanies every major visit to keep the day running smoothly.

Background

The facts

This 8-day Egypt itinerary combines Cairo archaeology with a Nile cruise segment between Aswan and Luxor. The route covers the Giza Plateau, the Egyptian Museum, Islamic and Coptic Cairo, then continues south to Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Luxor. Accommodation and intercity transfers are included as part of the arranged tour program.

In Cairo, the tour includes the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Great Sphinx at Giza, along with museum collections that are relevant to Old, Middle, and New Kingdom history. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is known for its pharaonic collections, including objects associated with Tutankhamun’s funerary assemblage. The itinerary also includes time in Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo, where major landmarks such as Sultan Hassan Mosque and the Hanging Church are commonly visited.

In Aswan, the sightseeing program includes the Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and Philae Temple on Agilkia Island. The route then follows the Nile northward with scheduled stops at Kom Ombo Temple, dedicated to Sobek and Horus, and Edfu Temple, one of the best-preserved Ptolemaic temples in Egypt. The final inland segment in Luxor includes the West Bank, including the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple, plus Karnak Temple on the East Bank.

This type of itinerary is typically chosen by travelers who want a structured overland-and-river route with guided monument visits rather than a short cruise-only package. Entrance fees for the listed sites are included, while pyramid interior tickets, premium tombs, international flights, visas, and gratuities are excluded unless stated otherwise.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Unlike a short four-night cruise package, this itinerary gives more time for Cairo sightseeing before the southbound Nile segment and includes the major West Bank monuments in Luxor. Compared with a cruise-only holiday, it combines land-based archaeology in Cairo with river travel between Aswan and Luxor. Compared with independent travel, the itinerary bundles transfers, accommodation, entrance fees for listed sites, and Egyptologist guiding into one arranged program.

Accessibility

Who can join this

This itinerary involves uneven terrain, cobbled surfaces, and multiple flights of stone steps at sites such as the Giza Plateau, Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple and Philae Temple. Visits to Philae require boarding a small motorboat with steps; the island has ramps but also steps between levels. Many temple entrances and tombs include narrow passages and steps; Khufu pyramid interior and some premium tombs have steep confined sections and are excluded unless requested. Coaches are air-conditioned but not level with historic site entrances. Wheelchair users should note that full independent access is not possible at several sites, and a folding wheelchair may be difficult on sandy or cobbled surfaces. We arrange meet-and-assist at airports and can provide a travel companion or porterage on request; please contact us before booking to discuss mobility needs and reasonable adjustments.

Children & families

Minimum age for this itinerary is 6 years, due to long days, boat transfers and visits to tombs with stairs. Child fares normally apply to travellers aged 6 to 11 sharing a double room with two adults; children 12 and over are charged the adult rate. Strollers can be used in urban hotels but are impractical at many archaeological sites because of sand and cobbles; folding strollers are easier to carry. High chairs and baby cots are not guaranteed in all hotels, please request them at time of booking so we can check availability with the suppliers.

Responsible travel

How we travel here

Transport on this itinerary uses air-conditioned coaches for overland transfers and small motorboats for Philae landings, plus a scheduled Nile sailing segment with organised stop-offs at Kom Ombo and Edfu. We contract local Egyptologists, boat crews and hotels, and pay suppliers directly in Egypt to support local livelihoods. To reduce waste we ask guests to bring refillable water bottles; water refills are provided where possible. Guide briefings include responsible-site guidance, for example staying on marked paths at archaeological sites. We do not bundle large coach-group departures for this route; instead we arrange private or small-group departures to reduce the per-person footprint of transfers and visits.
