Best time to go

The most comfortable months are October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan are typically milder and sightseeing is easier. May to September can be very hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan, so early departures and shaded breaks matter more. During Ramadan and major holidays, opening hours and traffic patterns may change, so timings should be confirmed in advance.

02 Overview

A first look

Early arrival and the limestone on the Giza Plateau is still cool underfoot, and the low light brings out the block courses of Khufu and Khafre while the Sphinx casts a long shadow. You will move between Cairo's museum rooms and the slow rhythm of the Nile, stepping from a hotel lobby into a cabin, from a temple colonnade onto a shaded deck.

Our Egyptologists lead each visit and your vehicle picks you up at set times; we arrange the domestic flights and transfers so you do not carry luggage between sections. We do not run group bus tours; instead we time Abu Simbel and the temple visits to avoid the busiest hours.

Background

The facts

This 8-day Egypt itinerary combines three hotel nights in Cairo with four nights on a Nile cruise arranged between Luxor and Aswan. It begins with airport meet-and-assist at Cairo International Airport, then moves to the Giza Plateau, where the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure stand west of modern Cairo, about 13 km from the city center. The Cairo portion also includes the Egyptian Museum, which houses major Pharaonic collections.

The program continues with a domestic flight from Cairo to Luxor, followed by embarkation on the cruise vessel in Luxor. On the East Bank, the main temple complex is Karnak, built and expanded from the Middle Kingdom through the Ptolemaic period, and Luxor Temple, which is linked to the ancient city of Thebes. On the West Bank, the Valley of the Kings contains royal tombs from the New Kingdom, including the burial area associated with Tutankhamun; some premium tomb entrances are not included unless requested.

While the vessel sails south, guided stops are made at Edfu and Kom Ombo. Edfu Temple, dedicated to Horus, was built mainly between 237 and 57 BC during the Ptolemaic period, while Kom Ombo is a double temple associated with Sobek and Horus the Elder. In Aswan, the itinerary includes the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, both standard sightseeing stops in the city.

The final excursion is to Abu Simbel, approximately 280 km southwest of Aswan near the Sudan border. The twin rock-cut temples of Ramses II and Nefertari were originally completed in the 13th century BC and were later relocated during the 1960s UNESCO salvage campaign to avoid flooding from Lake Nasser.

  • 04 Explore Luxor East Bank temples and the West Bank necropolis including Valley of the Kings

Worth knowing

How this compares

Unlike a land-only Egypt tour, this package includes both Cairo hotel nights and a Nile cruise section, which reduces overland travel between Upper Egyptian cities. Compared with a large group departure, it uses private transfers and a dedicated Egyptologist, so site timing and pacing are more controlled. It also differs from a simple cruise-only itinerary because it begins with Cairo’s major monuments before moving south to Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan, and Abu Simbel.

Accessibility

Who can join this

This 8-day Cairo and Nile Cruise Tour requires moderate mobility. Expect cobblestones, uneven ancient stone, narrow tomb passages and steps at the Valley of the Kings, Khufu pyramid plateau and many temple approaches. Boarding the four-night Nile cruise involves a short gangway with one or two steps; crew can assist but the gangway can be steep at low Nile water levels. Transfers use air-conditioned vehicles; some hotels and cruise common areas have ramps and elevators, but certain historic sites have stairs and limited handrails. Wheelchair users will need a folding, travel-friendly wheelchair for transfers and some sites, and should contact us in advance so we can request assistance and plan accessible routes when possible. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we will provide a named representative and our Egyptologists with specific, practical accessibility guidance once we have details about mobility needs.

Children & families

Strollers are practical at hotels and on flat promenades in modern cities, but historic sites and the Valley of the Kings have uneven terrain and steps where strollers are impractical. High chairs are not guaranteed on the cruise; please request infant or child equipment at time of booking so we can request them from suppliers.

Responsible travel

How we travel here

We use air-conditioned, Euro-5 standard minibuses or coaches for all transfers and sightseeing, selecting smaller vehicles where narrow streets or small groups make sense. The four-night Nile cruise is operated by a local cruise company; cabin cleaning follows linen-reuse prompts to reduce laundry frequency. We work with Egyptologist guides and drivers who live in the regions visited, keeping guide and driver work local. Where possible we source meals and supplies from Cairo, Luxor and Aswan vendors to support local small businesses. We discourage single-use plastics on excursions by providing refill information for drinking water and recommending reusable bottles. If you request community visits or private village projects, we will share verifiable details and direct payments so benefits reach the local hosts.
