02Overview
A first look
Six days is short for Egypt, so this itinerary spends them on the sites you came for and keeps the logistics out of your way. You sleep in hotels the whole time: two nights in Cairo, one in Luxor and two in Aswan, with a domestic flight each way down and back up the Nile instead of long overland days. Day two is the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Day three is a morning flight to Luxor, then Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. Day four is a private drive south along the river, stopping at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo before you reach Aswan. Day five is the early road trip to Abu Simbel and Philae Temple on the way back. Day six finishes with the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, then your flight to Cairo for your onward journey. If you would rather sleep aboard a ship, our Nile cruise tours cover the same river; this one is hotels throughout.
Background
The facts
This six-day, land-based tour connects Cairo and Giza with Luxor, Aswan, and Abu Simbel in southern Egypt. Discovery Tours Egypt arranges the itinerary, including sightseeing led by an Egyptologist and accommodation supplied by third-party hotels.
In Giza, the Giza Plateau and Great Sphinx are southwest of central Cairo. The route continues to Luxor, then south by road to Aswan, with stops at Edfu and Kom Ombo. Abu Simbel is about 280 km southwest of Aswan by road; the itinerary returns to Aswan after the visit.
The Giza pyramids date to Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, around the 26th century BCE. Karnak and Luxor Temple reflect centuries of construction at ancient Thebes, whose monuments are part of the UNESCO-listed Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis. Abu Simbel and Philae are included in the UNESCO-listed Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, relocated during the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
Opening hours vary by site and season, so confirm current schedules before visiting. The Valley of the Kings ticket covers three general tombs; entry to premium tombs, including Tutankhamun and Seti I, costs extra. Sightseeing includes walking over uneven ancient surfaces, and the Abu Simbel road trip starts early.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
At Giza, ask your Egyptologist where the morning light best defines the pyramid faces for photographs.
- 02
Carry sun protection and water for Abu Simbel; the exposed approach offers little shade.
- 03
Choose sturdy walking shoes for the uneven stone paths at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings.
- 04
Ask your guide to explain the relocation marks and construction details at Philae, not only the temple reliefs.
Tailor it
Make it yours
You can ask us about hotel upgrades, extra tomb tickets such as Tutankhamun, and adjustments to the sightseeing pace. The itinerary is arranged as a private tour; ask us to confirm which changes are available for your dates.
All requests handled by your dedicated specialist before booking.
Where it fits
This six-day itinerary links Cairo and Giza with Luxor, Aswan, and Abu Simbel, making it a compact option before or after a longer stay in Cairo. Unlike a Cairo-only visit, it includes the major Nile Valley sites without a Nile cruise.
Accessibility
Who can join this
This tour involves substantial walking across large archaeological sites, including uneven stone paths, sand, exposed ground, and steps at some monuments. The Valley of the Kings has sloping, uneven routes, and access inside individual tombs can involve narrow passages and steps. Karnak Temple, Philae Temple, and Abu Simbel also include extensive outdoor walking; surfaces and access arrangements vary by area. Wheelchair access may be limited, and a wheelchair may not reach every site feature or tomb interior. Private vehicles are arranged for the road journeys, but boarding and storage space depend on the vehicle assigned. Tell us about mobility needs before booking so we can check practical arrangements for your dates.

How we travel here
The itinerary uses domestic flights between Cairo and Luxor and between Aswan and Cairo, plus private road transfers for the journeys to Aswan and Abu Simbel. The vehicle type can vary, so we cannot make a fuel-efficiency claim for every departure. Sightseeing is arranged with local Egyptologist guides and ground-service providers in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. Choosing local guides and suppliers directs part of the trip’s spending to businesses in the places visited, but we do not claim a measured community benefit or carbon reduction. Abu Simbel is a long road journey from Aswan, and the flight sectors reduce the need to cover the full route by road.

·In summary
Abu Simbel lies about 280 km southwest of Aswan by road, making the visit a long round trip with an early departure. The six-day route also links Giza, Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Aswan’s Philae Temple.
Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Is this 6-day Egypt tour a Nile cruise?
No. You sleep in hotels every night: two in Cairo, one in Luxor and two in Aswan. We cover the stretch between Luxor and Aswan by private car, with stops at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo, rather than by ship. If you want to sleep on the river, look at our Nile cruise tours.02How do we travel between the cities?
Two domestic flights do the long distances: Cairo to Luxor on day three and Aswan to Cairo on day six. Between Luxor and Aswan on day four you travel by private car with a guide, which lets you visit Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way.03Can we really see Luxor in one day?
You see the main sites: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. It is a full day that starts with a flight from Cairo. If you want a slower pace in Luxor, ask us about adding a night.04How early do we leave for Abu Simbel?
The drive from Aswan takes about three and a half hours each way, so the day starts very early, usually before dawn, and you are back in Aswan around midday. The afternoon is for Philae Temple.05What happens on the last day?
You visit the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk in the morning, then transfer to Aswan airport for your flight to Cairo. The tour ends on arrival in Cairo, so book your onward international flight for the evening or later.06What standard of hotel is included?
You choose the standard when you book, from comfortable to luxury, and the hotels are selected for your travel dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are identical at every standard.
