The short answer

Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour is a 1-day private excursion covering the Giza pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.

Best time to go

The most comfortable months are usually October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo are cooler and visibility is often better for photography. From May to September, temperatures can rise significantly, so an early departure is preferable; during Ramadan and major public holidays, opening hours and traffic can be less predictable.

02 Overview

A first look

Your Cairo-based Egyptologist leads a focused half-day visit to the Giza Plateau. The plateau contains the Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure pyramids plus the Great Sphinx.

Background

The facts

The Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour is a private sightseeing excursion on the Giza Plateau in Cairo, typically completed in about four hours including hotel pickup and return within central Cairo. The visit focuses on the three main pyramids of Giza—Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure—and the Great Sphinx, with time for photography and guided interpretation from an Egyptologist.

The Giza Plateau lies roughly 20 km southwest of central Cairo, depending on the hotel location and traffic conditions. The site contains the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, built in the 4th Dynasty around 2560 BCE, along with the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, which are arranged on the western desert edge overlooking the Nile valley.

The Great Sphinx, carved from limestone, is generally associated with Pharaoh Khafre and sits close to his pyramid complex. Visitor logistics usually involve private road transfers, walking on uneven ground, and stops at designated viewpoints where the pyramids and Sphinx can be photographed; entry inside the pyramids is optional and requires separate tickets purchased on site.

Because this is a short excursion rather than a full-day programme, it is commonly scheduled in the morning or early afternoon to avoid peak heat and heavier traffic. Standard site entrance fees are included unless otherwise stated, while interior pyramid access, premium tombs, and gratuities are not included unless specifically requested.

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This excursion suits first-time visitors, history enthusiasts, and travelers staying in Cairo who want a focused introduction to the Giza Plateau without a long day out. It also works well for adults and older children who are comfortable with some walking on uneven archaeological terrain.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01 How long is the Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour?
The tour runs about three to four hours, from hotel pickup to drop-off. We focus on the Giza Plateau: Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure pyramids and the Great Sphinx. Unlike full-day excursions that also visit Saqqara and Memphis, this itinerary keeps to Giza so you have less transfer time and more time at the monuments. Morning departures are recommended to avoid peak heat and crowds; traffic in Cairo can extend transfer time.
  2. 02 Are entrance fees included in the tour price?
Standard Giza Plateau entrance fees are included; pyramid interior tickets are excluded. Government-set fees and site rules can change without notice, so we purchase tickets on arrival. Extras such as camel or horse rides, professional photos, and gratuities are paid locally. If you want the Khufu interior or other premium tickets, we can arrange them for an additional cost.
  3. 03 Can we enter the Khufu pyramid on this tour?
Entry to the Khufu pyramid interior is not included and requires a separate ticket and queue. The interior has narrow, low tunnels and steep stone passages; some guests find it claustrophobic and hot. We can arrange the interior ticket on request, but availability is limited daily, so early departure is necessary to secure places. For most guests, an external circuit of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure provides the more comfortable view.
  4. 04 Do you provide hotel pickup and drop-off in Cairo and Giza?
Yes; we provide private hotel pickup and drop-off within central Cairo and Giza as part of the tour. Our driver meets you in the hotel lobby at the agreed time holding a name card; airport pickups are handled separately. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and operate private transfers rather than shared coaches to keep timing flexible. Longer transfers from New Cairo, 6th of October City, or Cairo Airport may add time and could incur an extra charge.
  5. 05 Is this tour suitable for people with limited mobility?
Partial access only: the Giza Plateau has uneven stone, sand, and short steps that make independent wheelchair use difficult. Wheelchair users can be driven close to some viewpoints, but ramp access across the plateau is limited and the pyramid interiors are unsuitable. If you need assistance, notify us in advance so we can arrange a near-site vehicle stop and an assistant where possible. Expect walking on uneven ancient stone and limited shade at midday.
  6. 06 What should I bring and wear for the half-day tour?
Bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), comfortable closed shoes, and a refillable water bottle. Cover shoulders and knees for respect at nearby religious sites and in urban areas; loose, breathable layers are best for morning or late-afternoon departures. Carry small cash for tips, bottled water, or local purchases; large bags may be screened at the site entrance. Expect limited shade on the plateau and dusty, sandy walking paths.

We normally depart before sunrise (around 3:00–3:30 AM) so you arrive for morning light and cooler temperatures; expect roughly two hours on site. Distinctive point of view: we prefer road transfers because they avoid airport queues and deliver a predictable schedule. Trade-offs: it is an early start and a long round trip, with limited shade at the site midday.
