The short answer

Dendara & Abydos Temples Day Trip is a 1-day excursion covering Dendara Temple and Abydos Temple in the Luxor region, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.

Best time to go

The most comfortable months are October to April, when daytime temperatures in Upper Egypt are generally milder and sightseeing is easier. In summer, temperatures can be much higher, so an early start is important. During Ramadan and public holidays, opening hours, road traffic, and lunch service may be adjusted, so timing should be confirmed in advance.

02 Overview

A first look

This private day trip visits Dendera's Temple of Hathor and Abydos's Seti I temple, departing from Luxor early morning. Our Egyptologist and private driver handle logistics and commentary; expect a full day with extended driving on rural roads.

Background

The facts

Dendara and Abydos are two of Upper Egypt’s most important temple complexes, both reached by road from Luxor. Dendara Temple lies north of Luxor near Qena, while Abydos is farther north in Sohag Governorate; the drive between Luxor and Dendara is roughly 60–70 km, and the onward road journey from Dendara to Abydos adds a further cross-country transfer. Because both sites are inland and separated by rural roads, the excursion is typically organized as an early departure with private or small-group road transport.

Dendara is the main temple of Hathor, largely constructed in the late Ptolemaic period and completed under Roman emperors. The monument is known for its stone roof, astronomical ceiling scenes, crypts, and reliefs preserved in the chapel areas, including the Hathor-related devotional spaces often highlighted by Egyptologists. Visitors usually enter through the forecourt, columned halls, and inner sanctuary zones, with time spent examining carved scenes and inscriptions.

Abydos was one of ancient Egypt’s principal sacred cities and a major cult center for Osiris. The temple complex associated with Seti I and later decoration by Ramesses II includes the famous royal list, processional reliefs, and finely carved wall scenes. The site is historically important for understanding king lists, religious processions, and the development of New Kingdom temple art.

A same-day visit is logistically feasible because the route is handled by road with pre-arranged pickup, permits, entrance tickets, and lunch. The best practical order is to visit Abydos before the busiest mid-afternoon coach arrivals, then continue to Dendara or vice versa depending on traffic and site opening times. Most tours spend the day focused on the temples themselves rather than bazaar stops or shopping detours.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01 How long is the Dendara and Abydos day trip?
This is a full-day trip from Luxor, returning the same day. Expect an early start and a long day on rural roads; both sites are outside Luxor. Visits typically include time for the Temple of Hathor at Dendara and Seti I’s temple at Abydos, with short pauses for shade and refreshments.
  2. 02 Are entrance fees and the guide included?
Standard entrance fees for Dendara and Abydos are included; premium areas and gratuities are not. Your booking includes a licensed Egyptologist from our team who talks through the Abydos King List and Dendara’s ceiling scenes. Special camera permits or optional interior access (where offered) can incur extra charges; bring local cash for those.
  3. 03 What will we see at Abydos and Dendara?
At Dendara you'll see the Temple of Hathor; at Abydos you'll see Seti I's temple, the Abydos King List, and the Osireion. Dendara is noted for painted reliefs and a vaulted astronomical ceiling; Abydos has royal reliefs and the Osireion’s unusual substructure. Modest dress is expected for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered). Our Egyptologist highlights iconography and inscriptions during each stop.
  4. 04 How much walking and how accessible are the sites?
Both sites require moderate walking on uneven ancient stone, steps, and loose sand; wheelchairs will encounter obstacles. There is limited modern infrastructure at both complexes: some ramps and seating exist but many areas have steps and uneven thresholds. Tell us about mobility needs at booking so we can shorten walking, add rest breaks, or prioritise viewpoints that avoid steep sections.
  5. 05 Is food or water provided on the trip?
We supply bottled water; lunch is arranged at a local restaurant and is included only when specified in your booking. Expect a sit-down lunch stop at a nearby town or a simple restaurant–dietary requests can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Carry sun protection and snacks for the drive; shade is limited at the temple complexes.
  6. 06 Do you pick us up from our hotel in Luxor?
Yes–we provide hotel pickup in Luxor; your driver meets you at the time we confirm. Unlike mass-coach excursions, we operate this trip using private air-conditioned vehicles and our on-ground drivers. Exact pickup time depends on the season and daylight; we confirm timing the day before so you can plan your morning.
