Best time to go

The best time to visit is usually from October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo are milder and walking around the plateau is more comfortable. Summer months can be very hot, especially late morning through afternoon, so early arrival is preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, visitor flow and opening routines may be different, so checking the official site before going is recommended.

02 Overview

A first look

Khafre and Menkaure are two of the three principal pyramids on the Giza Plateau. The plateau is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing 'Memphis and its Necropolis' (inscribed 1979).

Background

The facts

The Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure stand on the Giza Plateau in Cairo as part of the Giza Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Khafre’s pyramid is the middle pyramid of the three main Giza pyramids and is known for a section of surviving casing stones near its summit, which helps visitors identify how the monument once appeared when newly finished.

Khafre’s pyramid was built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, around the mid-26th century BCE, for Pharaoh Khafre, son of Khufu. Menkaure’s pyramid was built later in the same dynasty for Pharaoh Menkaure and is smaller than the other two main Giza pyramids. The surrounding area includes temple remains and open desert paths that allow close views of both monuments from within the complex.

This admission covers access to the pyramid complex area around Khafre and Menkaure on the Giza Plateau. It does not include optional interior chamber access inside either pyramid, and any premium archaeological areas or separate interior tickets must be purchased independently. Visitors should expect security screening at the entrance and should check current opening hours before visiting, as seasonal schedules can change.

The site is located west of central Cairo, roughly 13 to 18 kilometers from downtown depending on the route and traffic conditions. Most visitors arrive through the main Giza entrance area near the plateau, then walk between monuments on site roads and sandy paths. Photography rules, last-admission timing, and ticket-check procedures are set by site authorities and may change without notice.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • This ticket suits independent travelers, history enthusiasts, and visitors who want close-up views of two major Giza monuments without a structured visit. It is appropriate for adults, older children, and families who are comfortable with walking on uneven ground and open desert surfaces.

What lingers

  • 01 Located on the Giza Plateau beside Khufu, Khafre appears taller due to higher bedrock despite being slightly shorter.
  • 02 Standard plateau ticket covers walking access and the Valley Temple; pyramid interior tickets (Khufu/Khafre) are sold separately.
  • 03 We recommend a pre-dawn or late-afternoon visit because limited shade and uneven stone make midday uncomfortable.
  • 04 Menkaure, originally about 65 meters high, is the smallest Giza pyramid and retains visible casing blocks near its base.
  • 05 Unlike cruise or overnight group schedules, our tickets allow flexible plateau timing to avoid peak coach arrivals mid-morning.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01 Does this ticket include entry inside the Pyramid of Khafre or the Pyramid of Menkaure?
Standard tickets cover access to the Giza Plateau and the exteriors of Khafre and Menkaure; interior entry is usually excluded. Interior access (when available) is sold separately and controlled by Egyptian authorities. Khufu and Khafre interior entries are commonly excluded from basic tickets; Menkaure’s interior is often closed to the public. Pyramid interiors require stooping, low light and uneven stone, so we can advise or arrange interior tickets on request.
  2. 02 How much time should I allocate to visit Khafre and Menkaure on the Giza Plateau?
Plan 60–90 minutes to walk near Khafre, Menkaure and the Sphinx; add time if you enter interiors. The plateau involves walking on gravel, sand and uneven stone between viewpoints. Unlike short cruise-operator stopovers, we allow relaxed time to photograph, walk between pyramids and visit the Sphinx without rushing. If you want an Egyptologist commentary or interior access, add 30–60 minutes.
  3. 03 Are guided tours included with this ticket, or do I need to hire an Egyptologist?
Most attraction tickets do not include a licensed Egyptologist; guide services are booked separately. We can provide licensed Egyptologists who meet you at the site and explain Khafre’s and Menkaure’s archaeology and construction. Independent local guides and vendors will offer commentary on-site; hiring an Egyptologist reduces time spent negotiating access and improves interpretation. Guide fees and entrance add-ons are billed separately from the basic ticket.
  4. 04 Can I take photos and use tripods at Khafre and Menkaure?
Personal photography is generally allowed at Khafre and Menkaure; professional equipment and tripods sometimes require permits. Flash photography is often forbidden inside pyramid passages; tripods and commercial shoots need prior authorization from Egyptian authorities. Drone use is tightly controlled and effectively prohibited for most tourists without special permits. Tell us your equipment and we’ll advise on permits or alternatives.
  5. 05 Are the Pyramid of Khafre and Menkaure accessible for someone using a wheelchair?
Access on the Giza Plateau is uneven; full wheelchair access to Khafre and Menkaure interiors is not available. Surfaces include sand, gravel and ancient stone with steps and no continuous ramps; interior passages have narrow, sloping tunnels. We can arrange vehicle drop-offs at designated viewpoints and assistance from drivers, but interior visits are usually impossible for standard wheelchairs. Please contact us with mobility details so we can propose the safest route and assistance.
  6. 06 What should I wear and bring for a visit to Khafre and Menkaure at midday in summer?
Bring sun protection, plenty of water and sturdy closed shoes; shade is limited on the Giza Plateau at midday. Lightweight, breathable clothing, a wide-brim hat, sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses and a refillable water bottle are essential. Expect dust and wind; small cash helps for toilets, bottled water and optional camel photos. Consider an early-morning visit to avoid peak heat and stronger light for photography.

Abu Simbel Temples – Ramses II & Nefertari (Aswan)

Abu Simbel comprises two rock-cut temples built by Ramses II and Queen Nefertari, relocated in 1964–1968 to avoid flooding from the Aswan High Dam. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange private road transfers (280 km, about 3 hours 30 minutes) or short domestic flights, private guiding, and overnight stays in Abu Simbel village. The Great Temple faces east and aligns with the sun on February 22 and October 22. Distinctive view: unlike coach-shuffle day trips, we favour private transfers or flights and recommend the overnight option so clients can see the sunrise illumination with fewer crowds. Trade-offs: the site has limited shade, intense midday heat, and requires an early start or a long road transfer.

Abu Simbel Temples – Sun Festival (22 Feb / 22 Oct)Aswan

Abu Simbel Temples – Sun Festival (22 Feb / 22 Oct)

Attend the Abu Simbel Sun Festival on 22 February or 22 October and watch sunlight enter the inner sanctuary. The temples are part of the UNESCO-listed Nubian Monuments and were relocated between 1964 and 1968 during the Aswan High Dam project. Sunlight illuminates the statues of Amun-Re, Ra-Horakhty, and Ramses II; Ptah remains in shadow. Abu Simbel is about 280 km south of Aswan (≈3.5–4 hours by road) or a short scheduled domestic flight (≈40 minutes), so the festival requires dedicated logistics. We do not bundle the festival with other same-day sightseeing; it needs permits and a fixed arrival window. Expect a pre-dawn pickup, security checks, and limited shade at the site. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange permits, transfers, and on-site briefings.

Al-Moez Street Entry TicketCairo

Al-Moez Street Entry Ticket

Al-Moez Street is a medieval Cairo thoroughfare lined with Fatimid and Mamluk-era monuments, gates and historic façades. This admission grants access to the pedestrianised street and its visible monuments, including views toward Bab Zuweila and the Mosque of Al-Hakim. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange the ticket and send it to you by email as a PDF after booking. Unlike a museum admission, the street is an open historic quarter rather than a single indoor site, so visiting times are flexible but subject to seasonal opening hours and special events.
