The short answer
Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum Day Tour is a 1-day private excursion covering the Giza Plateau, the Great Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months are usually October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo are generally milder and outdoor walking at Giza is easier. May to September is hotter, especially at the plateau, so an early departure is preferable. Ramadan and major public holidays can affect opening hours, crowd levels and lunch timings, so itinerary timing should be checked in advance.
02 Overview
A first look
This full-day private tour covers the Giza Plateau (Khufu, Khafre), the Great Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. The Giza pyramid complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing 'Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur.'
Background
The facts
This private Cairo excursion combines two of Egypt’s best-known archaeological locations: the Giza Plateau and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. The Giza necropolis lies on the west bank of the Nile, roughly 20 km southwest of central Cairo, and contains the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, around the 26th century BCE. The Great Sphinx stands on the plateau’s eastern edge and is commonly visited together with the pyramid area because the monuments are within the same protected site.
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir opened in 1902 and has long served as the main display venue for many of Egypt’s pharaonic collections. Its galleries traditionally include objects from the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms, with notable material from royal tombs, including funerary equipment, statuary, jewelry and inscribed objects. A guided visit typically focuses on selected highlights because the collection is large and cannot be covered in detail in a single short stop.
Travel between central Cairo and Giza is usually short, but traffic can affect timings, so a private vehicle is useful for keeping the day on schedule. Standard site entrance fees are generally included in tour arrangements unless stated otherwise; access to pyramid interiors is separate, and the interior of Khufu’s pyramid is not part of most standard visits. The excursion is usually paced with walking sections, photography stops and a lunch break arranged during the day.
Because both sites are high-demand landmarks, early departure helps reduce congestion at the plateau and inside the museum. Visitors should expect outdoor heat at Giza for much of the year, while the museum is indoors and air-conditioned in many areas, making the combination practical for a single day in Cairo.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 How long is the Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum day tour?
The tour typically lasts 8–9 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. Pickup windows depend on your hotel location; we confirm an exact time when you book. Visits cover the Giza Plateau, the Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum with commentary from our Egyptologist at each stop. Expect an early start to avoid Cairo's midday heat and heavier traffic. -
02 Does the tour include entrance fees and the Great Pyramid (Khufu) interior?
Standard site entrance fees are included, but the Khufu (Great Pyramid) interior is not included by default. We do not include the Khufu interior by default; we add it on request for the additional ticket. Adding the interior requires a short, steep climb in a confined passage–many guests prefer to spend more time on the plateau instead. -
03 What time will you pick me up from my Cairo hotel?
Pickup time depends on your hotel; we confirm the exact pickup time at booking. Typical pickups in central Cairo are between 7:00 and 8:30 a.m. to align with museum and plateau timings and to avoid the worst heat. During Ramadan or national holidays opening hours can shift; we adapt your pickup time accordingly. -
04 Is lunch included on this Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum day tour?
Lunch is not automatically included; we offer it as an add-on or can recommend nearby restaurants. Most guests choose a set-menu restaurant near the Egyptian Museum or a hotel restaurant; we can arrange vegetarian, halal, or allergy-sensitive options. Plan for a 45–60 minute lunch break to rest between sites. -
05 Do I need to wear modest clothing for the Egyptian Museum and Giza Plateau?
Yes–modest dress is expected for museums and any religious sites: covered shoulders and knees are recommended. On the Giza Plateau and around the Sphinx practical sunwear, a hat, and comfortable closed shoes matter more for walking on uneven stone. If you arrive without a scarf or cover-up, we can loan a lightweight wrap for museum or mosque visits. -
06 Is this tour suitable for people with limited mobility?
This tour involves uneven stone, steps, and some walking; it is not fully accessible for all mobility impairments. The Giza Plateau has sand and irregular paths; the Egyptian Museum has ramps but also areas with stairs. We can provide a vehicle to park close to entrances and plan extra time–please notify us before booking so we can arrange assistance and the best route for access.

We normally depart before sunrise (around 3:00–3:30 AM) so you arrive for morning light and cooler temperatures; expect roughly two hours on site. Distinctive point of view: we prefer road transfers because they avoid airport queues and deliver a predictable schedule. Trade-offs: it is an early start and a long round trip, with limited shade at the site midday.
