The short answer
Pyramids Sound & Light Show Cairo is a 1-day excursion covering the Giza Plateau and the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months are usually October through April, when evening temperatures in Cairo are cooler and outdoor seating is easier to manage. Summer evenings can still be warm, and dust or wind may affect visibility at the plateau. During Ramadan and major public holidays, departure times and traffic conditions may change, so guests should confirm the exact pickup time in advance.
02 Overview
A first look
The Sound & Light Show is staged nightly on the Giza Plateau after sunset. The narration recounts the building and significance of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure's pyramids.
Background
The facts
The Pyramids Sound & Light Show is staged at the Giza Plateau, where the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure stand on the west bank of the Nile in Greater Cairo. The show uses illuminated monument façades, recorded narration, and synchronized lighting to present a historical account of the Giza necropolis. Performances are scheduled in the evening, and show language alternates by night, typically in English and Arabic.
The Giza Plateau is about 18 to 20 km from central Cairo and roughly a 30 to 60 minute drive depending on traffic and hotel location. Visitors are normally transferred by road to the plateau, then seated in a designated viewing area for the performance, which lasts about two hours on site including arrival, seating, and the show itself. Because the event is timed to sunset and darkness, departure and return times vary by season and are set around the official performance schedule.
The narration centers on the builders and rulers associated with the Third and Fourth Dynasties, especially Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, whose pyramids date to the Old Kingdom period, around 2600 to 2500 BCE. The setting is outdoors, so evening temperatures, wind, and seasonal visibility can affect comfort and photography. This excursion is typically arranged as a hotel pickup and drop-off service with reserved tickets rather than as a walking tour of the pyramid complex.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 What is the Pyramids Sound & Light Show?
The Pyramids Sound & Light Show is an evening narration and lighting production projected onto the Giza Plateau monuments. The script and voices recount the lives of Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure and the Sphinx; language availability depends on the promoter. The production uses recorded narration and colored lighting rather than live actors, and the presentation varies by season and promoter. -
02 When does the show start and how long does it run?
The show begins after dusk; scheduled start times and exact durations vary by season and by the promoter. Run time and showtime change with daylight hours and program editions; we confirm the precise start and finish for your travel date. Unlike daytime Giza visits, evening transfers require planning for Cairo traffic and hotel return times. -
03 Are tickets and transfers included in the booking?
Show tickets and transfers are not included by default; we add them if you request or your itinerary lists them. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we source official show tickets and can provide private transfers and licensed guides on request. Standard site entrance fees are included when we state that explicitly; pyramid interiors and premium extras remain separate. -
04 Can I visit the Great Pyramid interior during the show?
No; visits inside Khufu, Khafre, or other pyramid interiors are daytime activities requiring separate tickets and scheduling. Interior access is managed separately from the evening production and often has daily quotas and age or mobility restrictions. If you want an interior visit, we can schedule a daytime slot in addition to the evening Sound & Light performance. -
05 Is the show suitable for children or guests with limited mobility?
The show is family-friendly but involves low light, late hours, uneven ground, and limited fixed seating. Giza Plateau surfaces include sand, steps and uneven ancient paving; wheelchair access is restricted and varies by venue management. For guests with reduced mobility we can arrange closer seating, vehicle drop-off where available, or a daytime private visit instead. -
06 Can I take photos or record video during the Sound & Light Show?
Photography is generally allowed, but flash, tripods, and professional equipment may be restricted by the show operator. Night exposures are challenging without a tripod; if you require professional filming or large equipment we must secure prior permission and permits, which can take extra time and incur fees.

We normally depart before sunrise (around 3:00–3:30 AM) so you arrive for morning light and cooler temperatures; expect roughly two hours on site. Distinctive point of view: we prefer road transfers because they avoid airport queues and deliver a predictable schedule. Trade-offs: it is an early start and a long round trip, with limited shade at the site midday.

CairoAlexandria Day Tour – incl. Wadi Natrun Monasteries
A full-day private tour from Cairo visiting Alexandria’s major sites and two Coptic monasteries in Wadi Natrun. We travel by private vehicle with one Egyptologist for the whole day; we do not run coach-bus group schedules. Unlike cruise-shore excursions that start from the port, this itinerary begins and ends in Cairo so you avoid port transfers. Expect a long day with significant driving: Alexandria is about 220 km (≈3 hours) from central Cairo and Wadi Natrun is about 90 km (≈1.5 hours). Moderate walking on uneven ancient stone and monastery courtyards is required.
